EY Hiring Process, Interview Questions and Assessment

The short answer

EY hires in three steps: apply online, prepare for interviews and complete any assessment, then review the offer. Some roles include a written assessment, writing samples or coding questions, and EY US says its interviews are behavioural, case study or both, typically by video and 30 to 45 minutes long. EY says the exact structure depends on the country, service line and role.

  • EY India says the candidate profile and application take about 30 minutes, and each position or location needs its own application.
  • EY doesn’t publish what its written assessment contains, how long it takes or a pass mark.
  • EY’s interview tips say it values integrity, doing the right thing, and communicating openly and honestly.
  • EY US says a decision is usually made quickly after the final interview.

EY's hiring process has three steps: you apply online, you prepare for interviews and complete any assessment the role needs, and you review the offer. EY says on its US and India careers pages that the assessment's structure and content depend on the country, service line and role.

EY member firms run their own recruiting, so details differ by country. Everything below comes from EY's own careers pages, linked as we go, and we name the country where a detail comes from one firm. Where EY doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the EY application process?

You search EY's job listings and apply online. EY US says recruiters review applications against your "academic background, skill set and work experience", and EY India says it invites you to interview if your application meets its requirements.

  • Experienced hires apply through EY's experienced job search at careers.ey.com.
  • Students and new graduates apply through EY's early careers job board, linked from each country's careers page.
  • About 30 minutes. EY India says the candidate profile and application take about that long, and you can save your application and come back to it.
  • One application per role. If you want more than one position or location, EY asks for a separate application for each.
  • Keep your profile up to date. EY US says you can review, update or withdraw your applications in your candidate profile.

For EY US internships, the FAQ says summer internship applications open in the autumn of the previous year, and it encourages students to apply to no more than two positions within six months.

Does EY have an online assessment?

For some roles, yes. EY says it may ask you to complete a written assessment, online or at a testing centre, and that some roles need writing samples or coding questions. The exact structure and content depend on the country, service line and role.

EY doesn't publish the names, sections, length or scoring of its assessments on the pages we checked. Treat question counts and pass marks you read on prep sites as unconfirmed, and read your invitation carefully: it usually names the test and the time allowed.

Depending on what you're sent, these guides explain the common formats:

What is the EY interview process?

EY US says its interviews are a behavioural interview, a case study interview or a combination of both. Its interview tips say they are typically hosted by video and generally last 30 to 45 minutes. EY doesn't publish how many rounds there are, and it says the process varies by role, experience level and service line.

The behavioural interview

EY describes this as open-ended questions about what your past experiences, behaviours and choices could say about your future performance. EY India's interview tips say the prompts start with phrases like "Give an example of" or "Describe a situation when", and that answers are judged on whether you:

  • described a relevant experience;
  • explained the action you took;
  • described what your action led to.

That's the STAR method in all but name: situation, task, action, result.

The case study interview

EY US says a case study interview gives you a sample business scenario to read through and then discuss with your interview facilitator. Our guides to what a case study interview is and consulting case interview examples show how to structure your thinking out loud.

Format and practical points

  • In person, phone or video. EY says your interview experience may be a combination of all three.
  • Business casual is what EY US recommends wearing.
  • For video interviews, EY suggests a quiet private space, testing your camera, microphone and connection beforehand, and looking at the camera when you speak.

What happens after the EY interview?

EY US says "a decision is usually made quickly after the final interview", and asks you to tell your recruiter if you've received another offer. If you're successful, you get a written offer and can ask questions before accepting. EY then gives you access to a global onboarding portal for pre-joining tasks, followed by an induction and ongoing orientation.

EY doesn't publish a timeline from application to offer. Its US FAQ says only that it aims to give an update "within a timely manner" after you apply.

EY India also warns candidates to be careful if they're contacted by unauthorised third-party recruiters, and to deal only with official EY recruitment channels.

Common EY interview questions and how to answer them

These are questions to prepare for, based on what EY says it looks for. EY doesn't publish its questions. Its purpose is "building a better working world", its what we look for page asks for "strong communicators, collaborative leaders and adaptable thinkers", and its interview tips say it values integrity, doing the right thing and communicating openly and honestly.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: your degree or current role, one experience that shaped you and why this EY role fits. EY says interviewers want to understand "the person behind the résumé", so make it sound like you.

2. Why EY, and why this service line?

Be specific about the service line you applied to and what draws you to that work. Link it to EY's purpose of building a better working world with a concrete example.

3. Give an example of a time you worked in a team to reach a goal.

Use STAR and keep the focus on your own actions. EY looks for collaborative leaders, so show how you helped the team work well as well as what you delivered.

4. Describe a situation when you had to do the right thing under pressure.

EY's interview tips name integrity and doing the right thing as values it seeks. Choose a real situation where the easy option was wrong, explain what you did and what it led to.

5. Tell me about a time you had to communicate something difficult.

EY says it values people who communicate openly and honestly. Describe who you told, how you prepared and how they responded.

6. Give an example of when you had to adapt quickly.

EY asks for adaptable thinkers and an agile, growth-oriented mindset. Pick a change of plan, scope or team and show how you adjusted and what you learned.

7. What market trend or sector development interests you at the moment?

EY's how we hire page tells you to prepare your view of current market trends and sector developments. Choose one relevant to the role, explain why it matters to clients and what it might mean for EY's work.

8. Tell me about a time you used data to make a decision.

EY lists an analytics mindset among what it looks for. Explain the question, the data you used, what it told you and the decision that followed.

9. Describe a time you came up with a new way of doing something.

EY asks for an innovation mindset. A small, real improvement you made at work, at university or in a society works well. Say what changed as a result.

10. Walk me through this business scenario. (Case study)

Read the scenario carefully, state your assumptions, structure the problem into parts and talk through your reasoning. EY says you'll discuss the case with your interview facilitator, so treat it as a conversation and check in as you go.

11. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you learned.

Own it, keep it real and small, and spend most of your answer on what you changed afterwards. EY India's tips suggest including challenges you've faced and what you learned.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

EY says the interview is two-way. Ask about the role's scope, what success looks like in the first year, or how the team works with clients.

How to prepare for EY's hiring process

  1. Read the job description closely and match your skills to it. If you're changing careers, EY suggests identifying your transferable skills.
  2. Read EY's what we look for page and its purpose and values, so you can talk about them in your own words.
  3. Prepare five or six STAR stories covering teamwork, integrity, a difficult conversation, adapting to change, using data and a mistake. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  4. Pick one market trend in the sector the role serves and form a view on it.
  5. Practise a case out loud if your role might include one, ideally in a mock interview.
  6. Find out what the assessment covers. Ask your recruiter if the invitation doesn't say.
  7. Set up for video in advance: a quiet room, tested camera and microphone, and a reliable connection.

Practising realistic work tasks

Case studies and written assessments reward people who can work through a realistic problem calmly, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with EY and doesn't use EY's assessments or questions.
