BCG Online Assessment and Interview Process 2026

The short answer

BCG’s careers site describes four steps: an online application, a skills interview, a case interview and a team interview, with the case and team interviews used for client-facing roles. Its interview pages don’t describe an online test, so if your invitation includes an online assessment, the details in that email are the only reliable guide to it.

  • BCG says interviewers look for five values: integrity, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, a collaborative mindset and drive.
  • The case interview is a realistic business problem, and BCG says there isn’t always a single right answer.
  • Interviews include a behavioural portion, and BCG’s recruiters advise relating each answer to the job’s requirements.
  • BCG publishes no interview timeline, interview length or pass mark.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with BCG and doesn’t use BCG’s assessments or questions.

BCG's careers site sets out four hiring steps for consulting roles: an application, a skills interview, a case interview and a team interview. The case and team interviews apply to client-facing roles. BCG's interview pages don't describe an online test, so treat the details you read elsewhere about one with care.

Everything below comes from BCG's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where BCG doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the BCG hiring process?

You apply online, then go through a skills interview and, for client-facing roles, a case interview and a team interview. BCG's interview process page calls the whole thing "a two-way conversation": you show how you solve problems and work with others, and you learn whether BCG suits you.

One of BCG's London consultants says on the same page that BCG is values-driven and reviews candidates' answers "against both our values and the 'core competencies'". The five values BCG names are:

ValueWhat to show
IntegrityHonest answers, including about what you don't know
Intellectual curiosityQuestions that go beyond the obvious
Creative thinkingOriginal ideas you can explain and defend
Collaborative mindsetExamples of working with and through other people
DriveExamples of pushing something through when it got hard

BCG lists the values by name only. The "what to show" column is our suggestion for each one.

How does the BCG application process work?

Click "Apply" on a role at careers.bcg.com and log in to the application portal. BCG doesn't publish how long it takes to review an application or whether you can apply for several roles at once.

Two points from BCG's own pages are worth knowing before you apply:

  • BCG has guidance on using AI in your application. Its AI guidance page says to "use AI to support your thinking, not replace it", to be open about any AI use, and never to let AI claim skills or experience you don't have. A BCG recruiter quoted there warns: "If you (or AI) fabricate anything, it will backfire."
  • BCG never asks for payment. BCG's careers site warns of fake websites and offers, and says a genuine application through BCG's channels will never ask for credit card details.

What is the BCG online assessment?

BCG's careers pages, checked on 27 October 2026, don't describe an online test, a chatbot case or any other online assessment. Prep sites describe an online chatbot case they call "Casey", but their accounts of its length and number of questions disagree, and BCG doesn't publish a format, a time limit or a pass mark. If your invitation includes an online assessment, read the instructions in that email closely: they are the only reliable source for your version.

The skills an online case would test are the same ones BCG says its case interview tests: structuring your approach, asking questions, analysing data, doing quick calculations and identifying the factors that matter. Our guide to situational judgement tests covers a different but common pre-hire format, if your invitation mentions workplace scenarios.

BCG does offer a free way to try the work before you apply. OneDay@BCG is a set of virtual job simulations with 13 modules, such as working as a strategy consultant or data analyst, that you complete in your own time. BCG says completing them can help you stand out on your application, but it doesn't say how.

What is the BCG interview process?

BCG's interview process has three interview types after the application: a skills interview, then, for client-facing roles, a case interview and a team interview. BCG doesn't publish how many interviews each round has or how long each one lasts. Your recruiter can tell you, and it's a fair thing to ask.

The skills interview

This is a traditional interview about your experience, your skills and why you want to join BCG. It goes beyond your CV, so expect follow-up questions on the details of what you did. A BCG recruiter on the interview process page reminds candidates that interviews include a behavioural portion, and advises: "relate your answers back to the requirements of the job". Structure those answers in STAR form (situation, task, action, result); our STAR method guide shows how.

The case interview

BCG's case interview page describes the case, "also called a problem-solving interview", as "a realistic business challenge". You're expected to structure your approach, ask questions, analyse data, do quick calculations and pick out the factors that matter. BCG says there isn't always a single right answer: "what matters most is how you approach the problem and the quality of your reasoning."

BCG's own do and don't lists for the case:

DoDon't
Listen activelyPanic under pressure
Be yourselfRush your response
Think structurallyOvercomplicate solutions
Communicate clearlyIgnore feedback
Clarify assumptionsStay silent
Show your thinkingInterrupt

The team interview

For client-facing roles, the team interview tests problem-solving, analytical and communication skills. BCG doesn't describe its format further. Prepare for it as you would for the case interview, with extra attention to explaining your reasoning out loud.

What happens after the BCG interviews?

BCG's careers pages don't describe the steps between the final interview and an offer, or how long they take. Ask your recruiter what the timeline looks like for your office and role.

Common BCG interview questions and how to answer them

BCG doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below follow BCG's four published steps and its five values, so they are topics a BCG interviewer is likely to cover.

1. Why do you want to work at BCG?

The skills interview covers your motivation for joining BCG. Be specific: name the kind of problems you want to work on and why consulting, and BCG in particular, suits that. A generic answer about prestige tells the interviewer nothing.

2. Walk me through your CV.

Keep it to the two or three choices that explain where you are now, and link each one to the role. BCG says the skills interview goes beyond your CV, so be ready to go deep on any line.

3. Tell me about a time you showed integrity when it was hard.

Integrity is the first of BCG's five values. Pick a real moment when the honest choice cost you something, such as admitting a mistake or flagging a problem with your own work, and say what happened next.

4. Tell me about something you taught yourself because you were curious.

This tests intellectual curiosity. Choose something you went deep on without being asked, and explain what you found out and how you used it.

5. Describe a time you came up with a new way to solve a problem.

This tests creative thinking. Show the problem, the usual approach, why it wasn't good enough and what you tried instead. Say what the result was, including if it only partly worked.

6. Tell me about a time you worked with someone difficult.

This tests a collaborative mindset. Focus on what you did to understand the other person and get the work done.

7. Tell me about a goal you pushed through despite setbacks.

This tests drive. Choose an example where you hit real obstacles, and be specific about what you did each time something went wrong.

8. A client's profits are falling. How would you find out why?

This is an example of a case-style problem; BCG doesn't publish its cases. Clarify the goal and any assumptions first, then lay out a structure (for example, revenue and costs) before you dive into numbers. BCG's own advice is to think structurally and show your thinking, so talk through each step.

9. Estimate the size of a market.

Case interviews often need quick calculations. State your assumptions out loud, round to easy numbers, and sense-check the answer at the end. If the interviewer pushes back on an assumption, BCG's advice is not to ignore feedback: adjust and carry on.

10. What would you recommend, and why?

Every case ends with a decision. Lead with the recommendation, give the two or three reasons that support it, and name the main risk. BCG says there isn't always a single right answer, so a clear, well-reasoned one beats a hedge.

11. Tell me about a time you had to explain something complex to a non-expert.

The team interview tests communication. Choose an example where you changed how you explained something because of who was listening, and say how you knew it worked.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

A BCG consultant on the interview process page says the questions you ask at the end "can really help you understand if you are a fit for BCG". Ask about the work, the team and how people learn. Skip anything the website already answers.

How to prepare for the BCG hiring process

  1. Read the job description closely and note the requirements, so you can relate each answer back to them.
  2. Prepare one STAR story for each of BCG's five values: integrity, intellectual curiosity, creative thinking, a collaborative mindset and drive.
  3. Practise cases out loud, ideally with someone who will interrupt and push back, since BCG wants you to clarify assumptions and show your thinking.
  4. Practise quick mental maths and analysing data, which the case interview relies on.
  5. Try OneDay@BCG, BCG's free virtual job simulations, to get a feel for the work.
  6. Use AI only to support your preparation, and follow BCG's guidance: be open about it and never let it overstate your experience.
  7. Run a mock interview before the real thing, and get honest feedback on how clearly you structure answers.
  8. Prepare two or three questions for the end of each interview.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Cases and assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with BCG and doesn't use BCG's assessments or questions.

FAQs

Does BCG have an online assessment?

BCG's careers pages don't describe one. Prep sites report an online chatbot case, but BCG doesn't publish its format, so rely on the instructions in your invitation.

How many interviews does BCG have?

BCG describes three interview types: a skills interview, a case interview and a team interview, with the last two for client-facing roles. It doesn't publish how many interviews sit in each round.

Is there a right answer in a BCG case interview?

Not always. BCG says there isn't always a single right answer, and that what matters most is how you approach the problem and the quality of your reasoning.

Can I use ChatGPT or other AI for my BCG application?

BCG says you can use AI to support your thinking, not to replace it. It asks you to be open about AI use, check what AI produces, and never let it claim skills or experience you don't have.

Does BCG charge a fee to apply?

No. BCG warns of fake offers and says genuine applications through its channels never ask for credit card details.

How long does the BCG hiring process take?
