Bain's online assessment is a digital test of about 30 to 40 minutes, on either Sova or TestGorilla, that checks skills such as problem solving, communication and analytical thinking. For consulting roles it comes first, followed by one or more case interviews. Bain explains its process on its hiring process pages.
Everything below comes from Bain's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Bain doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Bain online assessment?
It's a screening test you complete before interviews. Bain's digital assessment page says candidates for intern and full-time consulting roles may need to take it, depending on role and office, and that it's one part of the review alongside the rest of your application.

What are the rules for Bain's online assessment?
- Meet the deadline. Bain says applications aren't considered if the assessment isn't done by the deadline in your invitation.
- Work alone. Bain says to complete it yourself, without help.
- No AI tools. Bain strictly prohibits them, along with recording, screenshots and software that transcribes or gives feedback.
- Set up properly. A quiet space, a laptop or desktop and a stable connection. Bain recommends Chrome for TestGorilla.
- Calculators stop at the test. Bain says calculators are allowed in the assessment but not in later interviews.
- Already done it? You don't need to retake it unless Bain tells you to.
If you got TestGorilla, our TestGorilla assessment guide explains how that platform's tests work in general. Bain picks which tests you see, so the guide won't tell you Bain's content.

What is the Bain interview process?
After the assessment, consulting candidates usually have one or more case interviews. Bain's interviewing page says interviews are customised to each role, and the formats it lists are:
- Behavioural interview about past personal, academic or work experiences.
- Chat with future colleagues about your experience, Bain's operating principles and how your skills fit.
- Portfolio or past-work review, where you walk through your work.
- Case interview or coding challenge, testing structured, logical thinking.
- Written assignment, a take-home challenge with about three days to complete, sometimes followed by a presentation.
Bain says you'll have "several rounds of interviews" but doesn't give a number, and that after each interview "you'll learn exactly how it went".
What is a Bain case interview?
Bain calls it "a structured conversation where you work through a real business problem", used for consulting roles only. On its case interview page, Bain says it isn't looking for a single right answer. It's watching how you think, structure problems and build on ideas as the conversation moves.
Bain's own tips:
- Ask clarifying questions until you understand the objective.
- Use a clear framework and walk the interviewer through it.
- Think aloud, sharing reasoning and calculations even when unsure.
- Listen to the interviewer's cues and adjust.
- Highlight the important numbers and insights.
- Pause to gather your thoughts when you need to.
Bain publishes two practice cases, Coffee Shop Co. and FashionCo., and says it will "never ask you to memorize and recite material".
How long does the Bain hiring process take?
Bain doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. It says that in some markets the assessment link arrives within a week of applying, and that you can expect to hear back within 60 days, with timings varying by role and office. Students should ask their on-campus recruiter about application windows.
Bain interview questions
Bain doesn't publish its interview questions. These are likely topics drawn from the formats and qualities Bain describes: intellectual curiosity, an entrepreneurial mindset, enjoying challenges, and a clear reason for choosing Bain.

|---|---|
| Why Bain? | Bain asks for a clear reason you want Bain specifically. Name something concrete: a practice area, an office, or a conversation with a Bain consultant. |
| Why consulting? | Tie it to solving client problems. Bain looks for people ambitious about helping clients. |
| Walk me through your CV. | Bain's advice is to know your CV and why each part is relevant to the role. Keep it short and pick the relevant points. |
| Tell me about a time you solved a hard problem. | Show your structure: how you broke the problem down and checked your answer. Bain says it looks for problem-lovers. |
| Tell me about something you started from scratch. | Bain names an entrepreneurial mindset. Use a project, club or business you built. |
| Tell me about a time you were curious and it paid off. | Bain names intellectual curiosity. Show the question you asked and what it led to. |
| Describe a time you persuaded someone. | Bain says some roles need presenting and persuading. Show how you used evidence and listened. |
| Tell me about working on a team under pressure. | Bain describes its culture as collaborative. Focus on how you helped others succeed. |
| Tell me about a hard ethical choice. | Bain says "doing the right thing is rarely easy, but always worth it". Show what you did and why. |
| Tell me about a time you had to adapt quickly. | Bain says "to lead requires the courage to adapt". Describe the change and your response. |
| Should a friend open a coffee shop? (case, from Bain's Coffee Shop Co. practice case) | Clarify the goal, set out a structure, size costs and revenue, and give a recommendation. Practise on Bain's Coffee Shop Co. case. |
| Why are a client's revenues falling? (case) | Separate price and volume, then dig into customers, competitors and the company. Bain's FashionCo. case covers this. |
| What questions do you have for me? | Bain suggests being curious about the firm and your interviewer's experience. Write your questions out beforehand. |
For the behavioural questions, structure answers with the STAR method and practise from our list of behavioural interview questions.
How to prepare for Bain's assessment and interviews
- Watch for the assessment email (check spam) and note the deadline.

- Run a mock interview for the behavioural questions.
