JP Morgan Hiring Process: Stages, Tests, Video Interview

The short answer

JPMorganChase describes four stages: explore, apply, interview and decision, with interviews held with several people over multiple rounds. Depending on the role, you may first be asked to complete an assessment; its FAQ lists recorded video interviews, live structured interviews, virtual skills assessments and technical tests. JPMorgan doesn’t publish a timeline, and it reviews student programme applications on a rolling basis.

  • Students are asked to focus on no more than three summer internship applications.
  • Many assessments can’t be retaken for a set period once you’ve completed them.
  • JPMorgan’s early careers handbook says the first round is a recorded virtual interview on HireVue and/or HackerRank (technology only); Pymetrics games were reported in 2019.
  • JPMorgan never asks for payment, and interviews only on its approved platforms.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn’t affiliated with JPMorganChase and doesn’t use its assessments or questions.

JPMorganChase hires in four stages: you explore roles, apply, interview over multiple rounds, and get a decision. Certain roles also require an assessment, such as a recorded video interview, a skills assessment or a technical test, and you'll be told if yours does. JPMorgan doesn't publish how long the process takes.

The stages and rules below come from JPMorgan's own How we hire page, its hiring FAQ and its early careers handbook, Find your path. Where we rely on reporting or candidate accounts, we say so.

What is the hiring process at JPMorgan?

JPMorgan's own page lists four steps, and its FAQ adds an assessment step for roles that need one.

  1. Explore. JPMorgan suggests reflecting on your experience, goals and motivation, and reading employees' stories, before you pick roles.
  2. Apply. Openings range from apprenticeships and internships to full-time roles. JPMorgan's tip: make your resume show your accomplishments, with measurable data where relevant.
  3. Interview. You "can expect to meet with several people in multiple rounds", and the format varies by position. JPMorgan says it wants to hire the whole person, not only the skills.
  4. Decision. If you're a match, JPMorgan contacts you with an offer. If not, it suggests exploring other roles and joining its Talent Network.

How do you apply to JPMorgan?

Through the careers portal linked from jpmorganchase.com. From the FAQ:

  • You need a profile to apply, though not to search. Chrome or Firefox is recommended.
  • You can't edit a submitted application. You can withdraw it, then create a new profile with a different email address and submit a new application.
  • Track your status under "My Application" in your profile. If JPMorgan asks for more information, use the "Provide Information" link in your profile or follow the email.
  • Chase branches don't take applications. Apply for branch roles online.
  • Accommodations for disabilities can be requested by email; the FAQ gives the address.

Student and graduate programmes

JPMorgan's student programmes page describes internships of 10 to 12 weeks for undergraduates in their next-to-last year, full-time programmes of 24 to 36 months depending on the role, and shorter pre-internship programmes. The FAQ adds:

  • Focus on no more than three summer internship applications.
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and JPMorgan says it can't speed up its decisions.
  • No finance background is required.
  • If you're not successful, eligible candidates can reapply in future programme years.
  • Studying abroad? You can still apply, but you may need to interview by Zoom video, and you'd work at the programme's location if hired.

Does JPMorgan use HireVue or Pymetrics?

For its early careers programmes, JPMorgan names HireVue and HackerRank, but not Pymetrics. Its handbook, Find your path, linked from the How we hire page, says there are two rounds: a recorded virtual interview "hosted over HireVue and/or HackerRank (technology only)", then an interview round that can include several interviews, held virtually and/or in person depending on the programme. The Pymetrics name comes from reporting.

What JPMorgan says. If a role needs an assessment, you'll be told. The FAQ lists three types:

Three boxed icons for JPMorgan's assessment types: a structured live interview, a recorded video interview and a skills test

  • Structured live interviews.
  • On-demand, recorded video interviews. You answer on camera within a set time, and JPMorgan says these assess skills such as language proficiency and presentation. You need a camera and microphone, and it recommends business attire and a distraction-free space.
  • Virtual skills assessments, including technical assessments that may be an online test or a live technical interview.

The FAQ also warns that once completed, many assessments can't be retaken for a set period. Start one only when you're ready.

What's been reported. eFinancialCareers reported in 2019 that JPMorgan had rolled out a suite of 12 Pymetrics games in its graduate recruitment, presented right after the application, and that strong results could lead to an invitation to a HireVue video interview. JPMorgan didn't comment on how it uses the results, and its current pages and handbook don't mention Pymetrics, so check your invitation email for what your application uses.

Our guides cover each format:

What are JPMorgan interviews like?

Expect several interviewers over more than one round, with the format set by the role. JPMorgan doesn't publish question lists. Its early careers handbook tells you to prepare examples from your own experience, suggests its SHER model (situation, hurdle, endgame, reflection) to structure them, and says to have answers ready about your academic background, strengths, weaknesses and career goals. For technical roles, its FAQ says a technical assessment may be a live technical interview.

For banking analyst programmes, candidates often call the final round a "Superday": several interviews on the same day. JPMorgan's own pages don't describe it, so ask your recruiter what your final round involves.

A candidate faces a panel of three interviewers at a table while another interviewer joins by video on a wall screen

To prepare:

  • Build stories with numbers. JPMorgan asks for measurable data on your resume, so have the detail behind each line ready.
  • Answer in STAR form (situation, task, action, result) or the handbook's SHER model. Our STAR method guide and list of behavioural interview questions help.
  • Know why this business. JPMorganChase reports three main businesses: Consumer & Community Banking (Chase), the Commercial & Investment Bank, and Asset & Wealth Management. Be clear which one you're interviewing for and why.
  • Practise out loud, on camera if you face a recorded interview. A mock interview with honest feedback is the closest rehearsal.

How long does the JPMorgan hiring process take?

JPMorgan doesn't publish a timeline. For student programmes it says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and it can't accelerate decisions, so applying early in the cycle is the one lever you control. For other roles, the time depends on the number of interview rounds and any assessment. Your status in "My Application" is the best guide while you wait.

What happens after the final interview?

If your skills and experience match the role, JPMorgan contacts you with an offer. If you don't get one, it suggests applying for other roles and joining its Talent Network. JPMorgan's pages don't describe post-offer checks, so read your offer letter for any conditions.

Watch for recruitment scams

JPMorgan's scam warning page says it will never ask for payment at any stage, doesn't make offers without interviews, and interviews only on its approved platforms. It says it only uses official email addresses, such as jpmchase.com, jpmorgan.com and chase.com, and never contacts you from free email accounts like Gmail or Yahoo. For a Zoom invitation, JPMorgan says to check that the link includes "jpmchase". Report suspicious approaches to phishing@jpmorgan.com.

Practising the assessment stages

Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward doing realistic tasks well under time pressure, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with JPMorganChase and doesn't use its assessments or questions.
