Allstate's interview questions depend on the type of interview your role uses: behavioural, simulation or technical. Allstate's own interview tips say behavioural questions are based on the core competencies in the job description and should be answered in STAR form. The questions below are built around what Allstate says it values, and each comes with how to answer it for Allstate specifically.
Everything about the process comes from Allstate's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Allstate doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Allstate hiring process?
Allstate says the process usually starts with an application review. If your experience matches the role, a recruiter contacts you about next steps, which may include interviews and, for some roles, an assessment. Allstate adds that the process varies by role and location. The details come from its careers FAQs and hiring process page.
Applying
- Apply from the job posting. Select "Apply now", submit your resume and answer a few role-specific questions.
- You can apply for several roles at once. Allstate recommends focusing on the ones that best match your skills and experience.
- Use a desktop or laptop if the application gives you trouble; that's Allstate's first troubleshooting tip.
- Don't rule yourself out on location. Allstate offers home, office and hybrid roles and says a location-specific listing shouldn't stop you applying.
- Visa sponsorship: Allstate's hiring process page says that in general it doesn't sponsor employment-based visas for US roles, while its careers FAQs say sponsorship may be available for certain roles and locations based on business needs. Ask your recruiter about the role you're applying for.
Tracking your application
Allstate emails you once it receives your application. Set up an account on its careers portal to check your status, see submitted applications and withdraw one if you need to. If a recruiter has already contacted you, they're the person to ask about your application.

What is the Allstate interview process?
Allstate interviews may be virtual or in person, by phone or by video, depending on the role and stage. Its hiring process page says interviews are usually virtual. The type of interview depends on the role:
| Interview type | What Allstate says it is | How to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Behavioural | How you've handled situations and used your skills in the past, based on the role's core competencies | STAR stories matched to the job description |
| Simulation | Theoretical situations, to see how you'd handle problems that could arise in the role | Walk through what you'd do and the outcome you'd aim for, in STAR form |
| Technical | Standard and problem-solving questions for roles like software engineering or data analysis; may include a technical proficiency test | Explain your thinking aloud and ask questions as you go |
A few rules apply to every virtual interview:
- Camera on. Allstate asks you to join video interviews with your camera on.
- Photo ID. Have valid photo identification ready at the start. Internal candidates don't need it.
- No recording. Allstate doesn't allow anyone to record or transcribe interviews, including with AI transcription tools.
- No live AI help. You can use AI to research the role and practise, but Allstate doesn't allow real-time AI assistance, proxy interviewing or anything that misrepresents who you are. Assistive technologies are welcome; tell your recruiter if you need an accommodation.
What is an Allstate simulation interview?
In a simulation interview, Allstate gives you theoretical situations and asks how you'd handle them. Allstate says there are "no right or wrong answers"; it's gauging how you'd approach problems that could come up in the role.
The format is close to a spoken situational judgement test. Allstate's advice is to practise beforehand and to tell a story: describe the situation, your role, the actions you'd take and the outcome you'd hope for. Where you've faced something similar, bring in that real experience.
Does Allstate have an assessment?
Some roles do. Allstate's FAQs say the process may include an assessment for some roles, and its interview tips say technical interviews may include a technical proficiency test. Allstate doesn't publish what these assessments contain, how long they take or how they're scored.
For coding tests, Allstate says to use the language you're most comfortable in, "whether that's Python, R, SQL or something else", explain your thinking while you work and ask questions. It also says the interview team doesn't expect a perfect solution straight away and will help you work through the problem.
What does Allstate look for in candidates?
Allstate publishes its shared purpose: giving customers protection and peace of mind today so they can pursue their hopes and dreams. Alongside it sit three values, four behaviours and four operating standards:
| Type | What Allstate lists |
|---|---|
| Values | Integrity (non-negotiable), inclusive diversity (leverages differences), collective success (prioritises enterprise outcomes) |
| Behaviours | Collaborate, challenge ideas, provide clarity, give feedback that is candid and actionable |
| Operating standards | Focus on customers, be the best, be bold, earn attractive returns |
Use these words as your checklist. Each STAR story you prepare should show at least one of them.
Allstate interview questions and how to answer them
Allstate doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below are ones to prepare because they test the competencies and values Allstate publishes. Structure the "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method, as Allstate recommends.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to two minutes and end with why this role. Pick the experience that matches the job description's core competencies, since that's what Allstate says its behavioural questions are built on.
2. Why do you want to work at Allstate?
Connect your answer to Allstate's purpose: protection that gives customers peace of mind. Say what part of that the role touches, whether claims, sales, technology or service, and why it matters to you.
3. Tell me about a time you went out of your way for a customer.
This tests "focus on customers". Choose an example where you understood what the customer actually needed, solved it and can describe how they reacted.
4. Tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma at work.
Allstate calls integrity non-negotiable. Pick a real situation, explain the pressure you were under and show that you did the right thing even when it cost time or effort.
5. Describe a time you challenged an idea or the way something was done.
This tests "challenge ideas to evaluate multiple alternatives". Show that you raised the issue respectfully, offered options and accepted the final decision once it was made.
6. Tell me about a time you gave someone difficult feedback.
Allstate lists "give feedback that is candid and actionable" as a behaviour. Describe what you said, how you said it and what changed afterwards.
7. Tell me about a time you put the team's goal ahead of your own.
This tests "collective success". Choose an example where you gave up time, credit or a preferred approach so the wider team or business got a better outcome.
8. A customer calls, upset after a car accident. How would you handle the call?
A simulation-style question for claims and service roles. Walk through it: listen, show empathy, confirm they're safe, gather the facts, explain the next steps clearly and follow up. Allstate says there's no single right answer, so focus on a calm, logical approach.
9. You have two urgent requests and time for one. What do you do?
Another simulation-style question. Explain how you'd judge impact and urgency, who you'd tell, and how you'd make sure the second request didn't get lost. This shows "provide clarity".
10. Tell me about a bold idea you pushed forward.
This tests "be bold with original ideas using speed and conviction". Describe the idea, the resistance you met, how you moved it forward and the result.
11. Tell me about a time you worked with people whose views differed from yours.
This tests "inclusive diversity". Show how you used the different perspectives to reach a better result.
12. For technical roles: talk me through how you'd approach this problem.
Allstate's technical interviews include problem-solving questions. Think aloud, ask clarifying questions, state assumptions and test your answer. Allstate says the team doesn't expect a perfect solution straight away.
13. What questions do you have for us?
Allstate's tips tell you to ask questions, and suggest asking about its culture and benefits. Ask how the team measures success, what the first few months look like and how the team works across remote and in-person days.
Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
What happens after the Allstate interview?
Allstate says you'll hear from a recruiter if you've been chosen to move forward, and you can check your status in the careers portal at any time. It doesn't publish how long a decision takes.
Background information is reviewed after an offer is made. Allstate says it reviews backgrounds individually rather than by automatic disqualification, considering relevance to the role, timing and context, and that it follows Fair Chance laws.
How to prepare for an Allstate interview
- Find out the interview type. Ask your recruiter whether it's behavioural, simulation or technical.
- Map the job description's competencies and prepare a STAR story for each.
- Learn Allstate's values and behaviours and know which story shows which.
- Practise simulation answers aloud. Allstate suggests a mock interview; a mock interview with honest feedback works.
- Set up your video interview. Allstate's tips: a quiet, distraction-free space, a test run of your internet, webcam and microphone, natural light facing you, and a digital copy of your resume to hand.
- Have your photo ID ready if you're an external candidate.
- Read Allstate's products and services on its website, as its recruiters suggest, so you can talk about the business.
- Bring questions about the role, team and culture.
Practising realistic work tasks
Behavioural questions reward prepared stories. Simulation interviews reward judgement on realistic problems, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Allstate and doesn't use Allstate's assessments or questions.
