Amex doesn't publish its interview format for experienced hires. Its US internships start with behavioural questions, and its values point to examples of serving customers, working in a team and acting with integrity. The route there depends on the role. Experienced hires apply on the careers site and interview by video or in person; student programmes add recorded video interviews, assessment centres or a coding test.
Everything about the process below comes from American Express's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Amex doesn't say something, we say so.
The American Express hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What Amex says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Apply | Apply on the American Express careers site. You can upload your CV to be matched to open jobs. | Not published |
| 2. Recruiter contact | A recruiter gets in touch from an @aexp.com address or a verified LinkedIn recruiter account. | Amex says updates depend on when you applied and the role |
| 3. Interviews | Video or in-person interviews. Student programmes may use recorded video, HireVue interviews or an assessment centre. | Some campus interviews are 30 minutes each; nothing published for other roles |
| 4. Assessment (some roles) | Depending on the role, a technical assessment. | Not published, except a seven-day window for one UK coding test |
| 5. Offer | Your application is submitted and e-signed on the careers site, then you get an offer letter to e-sign. | Not published |
What is the American Express hiring process?
You apply on the American Express careers site, a recruiter contacts you if you're a fit, you interview, some roles add a technical assessment, and successful candidates get an offer letter to e-sign. Amex doesn't publish a single timeline or round count for every role.

How do you apply to American Express?
Search jobs on the American Express careers site. Jobs are grouped into career areas including customer service and travel, technology, risk and analytics, sales, marketing, product, finance and corporate functions. You can also upload your CV and be matched to open roles.
A few rules from Amex's recruitment fraud page are useful to know before you start:
- Apply on the official site. Amex says applications must be submitted and e-signed on its careers site before it extends an offer.
- Amex never asks for money at any stage, and never refers you to a paid CV review service.
- Sensitive details come last. Amex says it won't ask for your Social Security number, bank details or passport number until you've accepted and e-signed an official offer letter.
Amex's AI guidance for candidates also covers your application. You can use AI to improve the format and structure of your CV, or to improve a cover letter draft you wrote. Amex says a cover letter should reflect your own perspective and your specific interest in Amex.
Student and graduate programmes
Amex runs internships and graduate programmes in several countries, each with its own selection process. In India, Amex says campus recruitment runs through universities: it meets students at university events, then works with campus teams to share the application and interview steps. Its student FAQ says you can apply to more than one internship.
How does American Express contact candidates?
Through a recruiter. Amex says genuine messages come only from "@aexp.com" or "careers@recruitment.americanexpress.com", and its recruiters use verified LinkedIn accounts. It promises clear details and next steps at every stage.
Amex says it will never contact you out of the blue from a free email service, social media or a messaging app such as WhatsApp. If something feels wrong, its advice is not to engage and to email Amex to check.
What is the American Express interview process?
Amex's AI guidance says interviews happen by video and in person. It doesn't publish how many rounds an experienced hire should expect or who you'll meet, so ask your recruiter.
The clearest published detail is for student programmes on Amex's student programmes page:
| Programme | Selection process Amex describes |
|---|---|
| US internships | A recorded video answering behavioural questions about the role, then two 30-minute interviews on the HireVue platform. Tech roles also take a technical assessment. |
| UK undergraduate summer internship | A pre-recorded video answering role-specific questions, then an assessment centre with competency-based interviews, case studies and group discussions |
| UK technology apprenticeship | An online coding assessment within seven days, then a Virtual Discovery Day with two consecutive 30-minute interviews |
| UK MBA summer internship | One or two interviews, then two one-hour interviews with senior leaders |
| Canada internship | Two virtual interviews with different hiring leaders, then a phone screen with a recruiter |
If your first round is a recorded video, our guide to one-way video interviews explains how they work and how to set up.
AI in Amex interviews
Amex says you may use AI to practise common interview questions. You may not use AI during a video or in-person interview unless your interviewer explicitly allows it, and you may not use devices such as smart glasses or hidden earpieces to shape your answers. Amex says inappropriate AI use can lead to disqualification.
Does American Express have an online assessment?
For some roles. Amex's AI guidance says that, depending on the role, there may be technical assessments, including ones that assess your AI literacy and how you use AI. For US internships, tech applicants take a technical assessment; the UK technology apprenticeship starts with an online coding assessment.
Amex doesn't publish what these assessments contain, how long they take, how they're scored or which platform hosts them. Treat question lists and aptitude-test topics from prep sites as unconfirmed. Amex also says any work you refine with AI must be work you fully understand and can explain and reproduce yourself.
If your invitation says HireVue, our HireVue coding assessment guide covers how that platform's coding tests work. If it names HackerRank, see our HackerRank test guide.
What happens after the American Express interview?
If you're selected, Amex sends an offer letter to e-sign. Amex doesn't publish how long a decision takes; its student FAQ says it receives a very high volume of applications and update timing depends on when you applied and the role.
If you need a reasonable accommodation at any stage, Amex says to email the recruitment accommodation address listed on its careers site or tell your recruiter.
Common American Express interview questions and how to answer them
Amex calls its values the Blue Box values: We Do What's Right, We Back Our Customers, We Make It Great, We Respect People, We Embrace Diversity, We Stand for Equity and Inclusion, We Win As a Team and We Support Communities. Its student FAQ says it looks for creativity, strategic and analytical thinking, communication, collaboration and leadership behaviours. The answers below draw on both.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Give a short summary of what you do now, the experience that led here and why this Amex role is the next step. Keep it to a minute or two and end on the job you're interviewing for.
2. Why American Express?
Be specific. Name the career area you're applying to and connect it to something Amex says about itself, such as its aim to provide the world's best customer experience every day. Amex's own cover letter advice is to show your specific interest in Amex, so the same applies here.
3. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
This maps to We Back Our Customers, which Amex describes as being essential to customers and having their backs. Use the STAR method: what the customer needed, what you did beyond the usual and the result.
4. Describe a time you handled an upset customer or client.
Show you listened, stayed calm and fixed the problem or found someone who could. For customer service and travel roles, this is the core of the job. Finish with what you learned.
5. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was difficult.
Amex's first value is We Do What's Right: being reliable, consistent and acting with integrity. A small, real example where you were honest or raised a concern is better than a dramatic one.
6. Give an example of a time you improved a process or the quality of your work.
This tests We Make It Great, Amex's value about excellence. Amex also ties that value to a strong risk mindset, so if your example involved catching an error or tightening a control, say so.
7. Tell me about a time you worked on a team to reach a goal.
We Win As a Team says individual performance matters but never at the expense of the team. Describe your part clearly, and show how you helped others succeed too.
8. Describe a disagreement with a colleague and how you handled it.
Amex's value We Respect People mentions open, courageous dialogue so others feel heard. Explain how you raised the issue, listened to the other view and reached an outcome.
9. Tell me about a time you worked with people whose background or views differed from yours.
This links to We Embrace Diversity and We Stand for Equity and Inclusion. Show what you learned from the other perspective and how it improved the result.
10. Walk me through how you analysed a problem and made a recommendation.
Amex says it looks for strategic and analytical thinking. Pick an example with data or evidence, explain your reasoning step by step and say what happened. For risk, analytics and finance roles, expect follow-up questions on your method.
11. Tell me about a time you showed leadership without being the manager.
Amex's student FAQ mentions strong leadership behaviours. Describe a moment you took ownership, organised others or made a call, and the outcome.
12. How do you use AI in your work?
Amex's AI guidance says some technical assessments test AI literacy, and it values AI used responsibly. Be honest about the tools you use, how you check their output and where you wouldn't rely on them.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the team's priorities, what success looks like in the first few months and how colleagues learn and grow.
How to prepare for an American Express interview
- Ask your recruiter what the process looks like for your role: how many interviews, whether there's an assessment, and who you'll meet.
- Learn the Blue Box values and prepare one example for each of the main ones: customers, doing the right thing, excellence and teamwork.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- For recorded video rounds, test your camera, sound and lighting, and practise answering to a screen.
- For technical roles, practise solving problems and explaining your reasoning out loud. Amex says AI-generated solutions submitted without modification aren't acceptable.
- Do a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Check every message is genuine. Only @aexp.com and careers@recruitment.americanexpress.com are verified, and Amex never asks for money.
Practising realistic work tasks
Amex's values centre on how you handle real situations: customers, problems and teamwork. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with American Express and doesn't use American Express's assessments or questions.
