Aflac Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Prepare for Aflac interview questions on relationship building, clear communication and drive, the qualities Aflac says it wants in its Benefits Advisors. For sales roles Aflac describes three steps: apply online, interview with the local hiring team, and get your state insurance licence after accepting an offer. Corporate roles are applied for on careers.aflac.com, and Aflac doesn’t publish their interview steps.

  • Aflac Benefits Advisors are independent contractors, not Aflac employees, and the role isn’t salaried.
  • Aflac says licensing takes about 30 hours of study, and its local team walks you through it.
  • Sales applicants must be at least 18, authorised to work in the US and able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Aflac never asks applicants to send money or buy equipment.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Aflac and doesn’t use Aflac’s questions.

Prepare for Aflac interview questions on the qualities Aflac names on its own recruiting pages: networking and relationship building, clear communication, an entrepreneurial mindset and a positive attitude. Most questions below test one of those.

Aflac hires through two separate routes. Sales roles, such as Benefits Advisor, go through local hiring teams at aflac.com/sales-jobs. Corporate roles in areas like technology, finance and customer experience go through careers.aflac.com. The process details below come from those pages, linked as we go. Where Aflac doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Aflac hiring process?

For sales roles, Aflac's Why Aflac page sets out three steps: apply, interview with the local hiring team, and get your state insurance licence once you've accepted an offer. For corporate roles, you apply on Aflac's careers site, and Aflac doesn't publish the steps that follow.

Applying for a sales role

  • Click "Apply now" on Aflac's sales jobs pages and submit the application.
  • If your resume won't upload, Aflac says you can submit the application anyway and bring your resume to the interview.
  • Basic requirements: at least 18 years old, authorised to work in the US without employer sponsorship, and able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Experience: Aflac says no experience is required for the Benefits Advisor role. Sales or customer service experience is a plus.

Applying for a corporate role

Aflac's careers site groups corporate jobs into areas including accounting and finance, actuarial and risk, customer experience, data and analytics, HR and legal, investments, operational support, sales and marketing, and technology. Aflac says applicants must apply through its own site. It won't ask you to send money or buy electronic devices, and it gives CorporateCareers@aflac.com as the address to check that a job offer is genuine.

Students can apply for university programmes, which include paid summer internships, the Leadership and Analyst Program and a two-year rotational Information Technology Apprenticeship.

What is the Aflac Benefits Advisor role?

A Benefits Advisor sells Aflac's voluntary insurance through employers. Aflac's Benefits Advisor page lists the work as networking to find and keep clients, explaining Aflac's products to employers and their employees, guiding employees through enrolment and supporting claims.

Two facts to understand before you interview:

  • It's a contractor role. Aflac says its Benefits Advisors are independent contractors and are not Aflac employees.
  • It isn't salaried. Aflac says pay comes from commissions, bonuses, incentives and renewals. Ask the hiring team to explain how pay works for you, in detail, before you accept.

How do you get licensed after an Aflac offer?

You get your state insurance licence after you accept an offer. Aflac says licensing takes about 30 hours of study, its local team walks you through the process in your state, and the only cost is the licence itself, which varies by state.

Does Aflac have an assessment or online test?

Aflac's careers and sales pages don't mention an assessment or online test for any role. Treat claims you read elsewhere about personality or sales tests as unconfirmed, and follow any instructions the hiring team sends you.

Common Aflac interview questions and how to answer them

Aflac describes itself as a company that puts the customer first, champions an open-door management philosophy and believes that if it takes care of its employees, they'll take care of the business. For Benefits Advisors it names four qualities: networking and relationship building, clear and compelling communication, an entrepreneurial mindset and a goal-focused, can-do approach. The questions below are ones to prepare for; Aflac hasn't published a question list.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to a minute and end on why this role fits. For a sales role, mention anything that shows you build relationships or work towards targets. For a corporate role, link your experience to the job area.

2. Why Aflac?

Be specific. Aflac's voluntary insurance pays cash benefits directly to the policyholder when they're sick or hurt, unless assigned otherwise. Say why helping people with that kind of cover appeals to you, or name the corporate team you want to join and why.

3. What do you understand about how this role is paid?

If you're applying for a Benefits Advisor role, be ready to show you understand how it's paid: the role is commission-based and advisors are independent contractors. A calm, informed answer tells the interviewer you won't be surprised in month two.

4. How would you find new clients in this area?

This tests the networking Aflac asks for. Name real places you'd start: local business groups, people you know who run small businesses, community events. Explain how you'd follow up.

5. Tell me about a time you built a relationship that led to a result.

Use the STAR method. Pick an example where trust built over time paid off, such as a repeat customer, a referral or a supplier who went out of their way for you.

6. Explain a product or idea you know well as if I'm a customer.

Aflac's Benefits Advisors explain coverage to employers and employees, so the interviewer may test how clearly you explain things. Pick something simple, avoid jargon, check understanding and invite questions.

7. Tell me about a time you set a goal and worked towards it on your own.

This tests the entrepreneurial mindset and goal-focused, can-do approach Aflac names. Describe the goal, how you planned your time without being told, and what happened.

8. How do you handle rejection?

Sales involves hearing "no" often. Give a real example, explain what you learned from it and how you kept going. A positive attitude is one of the traits Aflac lists.

9. Tell me about a time you helped a customer through something stressful.

Aflac's policies pay out when a policyholder is sick or hurt, and Benefits Advisors support claims. Show patience, clear communication and follow-through.

10. How would you manage your own schedule?

Aflac promotes flexibility for its advisors, which means you plan your own week. Explain how you'd organise prospecting, appointments and follow-ups, and how you'd track progress.

11. Tell me about a time you worked with a team to solve a problem.

Common for corporate roles. Aflac describes a culture of camaraderie and an open-door management philosophy, so show that you share information, ask for help when you need it and give credit.

12. Tell me about a time you raised a concern with a manager.

The open-door philosophy Aflac describes works both ways. Give an example where you spoke up respectfully, suggested a fix and kept working well with the person afterwards.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

For sales roles, ask how the local team supports new advisors with licensing and training, and what a strong first few months looks like. For corporate roles, ask about the team's current priorities.

How to prepare for an Aflac interview

  1. Decide which route you're on. Sales roles and corporate roles are recruited separately and work differently.
  2. For sales roles, read the Benefits Advisor and Why Aflac pages and make sure you understand the contractor status and commission-based pay.
  3. Learn what Aflac sells. Its voluntary insurance pays cash benefits directly to policyholders, unless assigned otherwise, and Aflac has offered it for more than six decades.
  4. Prepare five or six STAR stories covering relationship building, communication, setting your own goals, handling rejection and teamwork.
  5. Practise explaining something simply, out loud, in under two minutes.
  6. Plan for licensing time. Aflac says it takes about 30 hours of study after you accept an offer.
  7. Do a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
  8. Ignore anyone asking for money. Aflac says it won't ask applicants to send money or buy equipment.
