BlackRock's interviews cover three things, by its own account: the BlackRock Principles, your experience and your capabilities. Before you get there, student and graduate applicants record a short video assessment, and engineering and modelling applicants also take a coding challenge.
Everything below comes from BlackRock's careers pages and candidate FAQs, linked as we go. Most of what BlackRock publishes is about its student and graduate programmes. Where it doesn't say something, we say so.
The BlackRock hiring process at a glance
| Stage | What happens | What BlackRock says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Online application | Enter basic details and upload your resume or CV. | Programme application windows are published (see below) |
| 2. Pre-interview assessment | Record video answers to questions about the programme you chose. | Under 15 minutes, in one sitting, within five days of applying |
| 3. Coding challenge | Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling applicants only: coding questions, then one video question. | Five calendar days; typically about 60 minutes |
| 4. Interviews | Meet representatives of the functions you applied to. May include a group exercise, presentation or case study. | Rolling, during each programme's review period |
| 5. Offer | Not described on BlackRock's pages. | Not published |
What is the BlackRock hiring process?
You apply online, complete a recorded pre-interview assessment, take a coding challenge if you're applying to an engineering or modelling function, and then interview with the teams you chose. BlackRock sets this out on its students and graduates page.
The application
For the Americas student and graduate programmes, BlackRock's candidate FAQs set firm limits:
- One programme. Choose the Full-Time Analyst Program, the Summer Internship, the MBA Internship or the Quantitative Master's Internship.
- Up to two applications within that programme, covering up to three functions in total, with up to two functions per application.
- Withdrawn applications still count towards your limit, and you can't replace one with a new application.
- One region. You apply to the Americas, EMEA or Asia Pacific, though you can note interest in another location.
Pick your functions carefully. With only two applications, a scattered choice wastes one.
When applications open
BlackRock's FAQs give these windows for 2027 programmes in the Americas:
| Programme | Applications open | Reviewed |
|---|---|---|
| Summer Internship: Investments | January | February to March |
| Summer Internship: Client & Product, Corporate Functions | March | April to May |
| Summer Internship: Technology | July | September to December |
| Full-Time Analyst Program | July | September to December |
| MBA and Quantitative Master's Internships | September | October to December |
The Full-Time Analyst Program runs for two years. The summer, MBA and Quantitative Master's internships run for nine weeks, June to August.
Experienced hires
BlackRock doesn't publish a separate interview process for experienced professionals. Its careers site says roles recruited externally are posted there, recruiter emails come from a blackrock.com address, and recruiters don't contact you or interview you by chat or text. BlackRock never asks for payment or bank details during hiring.

What is the BlackRock pre-interview assessment?
It's a recorded video interview. After you apply, you get a link and record answers to questions about the programme you chose. According to the candidate FAQs:
- You have up to three minutes to answer each question.
- The whole assessment takes less than 15 minutes.
- It must be done in one sitting within five days of submitting your application.
- No retakes once submitted.
- If you miss the deadline, your application is treated as incomplete and withdrawn, and you can't reapply for the same opportunity.
- If you apply to several functions that use the same assessment, you only complete it once.
BlackRock's FAQ sends technical problems to HireVue's support team, so expect the HireVue platform. Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how this format works and how to set up for it.
Does BlackRock have a coding test?
Yes, for Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling applicants. The FAQs describe a series of coding questions followed by one video question. You get five calendar days to complete the coding portion, which typically takes about 60 minutes, and the video question must be done in one sitting. The two functions use different coding tests, so applying to both means taking both. Neither can be retaken.
BlackRock doesn't publish the languages, topics or scoring. Our guide to the HireVue coding assessment covers how that platform's coding tests work in general.
What is the BlackRock interview process?
You interview with representatives of the functions you applied to, and the conversations focus on the BlackRock Principles, your experience or your capabilities. BlackRock says some interviews include a group exercise, a presentation or a case study, and software engineering interviews may include problem-solving exercises or technical questions.
BlackRock doesn't publish how many rounds there are, how long each lasts or whether they're held on one day. Your recruiter can tell you, and it's a fair thing to ask.
What are the BlackRock Principles?
BlackRock lists five on its culture page. Interviewers use them, so prepare a real example for each.
| Principle | What BlackRock says it means |
|---|---|
| We are a fiduciary to our clients | Clients' interests come first, with integrity and unbiased advice |
| We are One BlackRock | Working across teams and boundaries, with Aladdin as a shared way of understanding markets and clients |
| We are passionate about performance | Always looking for better ways to serve clients, and committing to keep learning |
| We take emotional ownership | Feeling responsible to clients and colleagues, and holding each other to high standards |
| We are committed to a better future | Taking a long-term view, helping people build a better tomorrow and investing in the success of all stakeholders |
Common BlackRock interview questions
BlackRock hasn't published its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, built from the topics it says its interviews cover: the Principles, your experience and your capabilities.
1. Why BlackRock?
Tie your answer to BlackRock's stated purpose of helping more people experience financial well-being, then to the specific function you applied for. Name something concrete, such as Aladdin or a business line you've read about.
2. Why this function, and why the other one you applied to?
You can apply to up to three functions, so expect to explain the link between them. Show a clear thread, such as an interest in markets that fits both Investments and Client & Product roles.
3. Tell me about a time you put someone else's interests ahead of your own.
This tests "We are a fiduciary to our clients". Pick a moment where doing right by a client, customer or teammate cost you time or credit, and say what you did and why.
4. Describe a time you worked across teams to get something done.
This is "We are One BlackRock". Choose an example where you needed people who didn't report to you, and explain how you got them aligned.
5. Tell me about a time you raised your own standard after doing something well.
"We are passionate about performance" is about continuous improvement. Show that you looked for a better way even when the first result was acceptable.
6. Describe a time you took responsibility for a mistake.
"We take emotional ownership" means holding yourself to a high standard. Own the error plainly, then spend most of the answer on how you fixed it and what you changed.
7. What does long-term thinking look like in your work?
This maps to "We are committed to a better future". Give an example where you chose a slower or harder option because it was better over time.
8. Walk me through a market or company you follow.
For Investments roles especially, have one market view or company you can discuss in depth: what you think, why, and what would change your mind. BlackRock lists ongoing learning under its performance Principle, so show how you keep up.
9. How would you explain a complex financial idea to a client?
If you've applied to Client & Product, be ready to explain a product clearly; BlackRock says interviews can include a presentation. Practise explaining one product or concept, such as an ETF, briefly and in plain language.
10. Walk me through how you solved a technical problem.
For Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling candidates, BlackRock says interviews may include problem-solving exercises or technical questions. Explain your approach out loud, including the trade-offs you considered.
11. How do you contribute in a group exercise?
BlackRock says some interviews include one. It doesn't publish how group exercises are assessed, so listen, build on others' points and help the group reach a conclusion. Working across teams is part of "We are One BlackRock".
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about the team's work, how analysts learn in their first year or how the function works with others. Avoid questions the careers site already answers.
For behavioural questions, structure each answer with the STAR method, and use our list of behavioural interview questions to practise.
How to prepare for a BlackRock interview
- Watch the application window for your programme and apply early in it, since interviews run on a rolling basis.
- Choose your functions deliberately. You get two applications and three functions at most.
- Do the video assessment within the five days, somewhere quiet, with your camera and connection tested first.
- Prepare one example per Principle. Five stories cover most behavioural questions.
- Practise the coding challenge format if you're in engineering or modelling: timed problems, then a video answer.
- Prepare for a group exercise, presentation or case study. Practise presenting a short analysis out loud.
- Rehearse in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and case studies and group exercises reward judgement on realistic problems. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with BlackRock and doesn't use BlackRock's assessments or questions.
