USAA interview questions are mostly behavioural: tell me about yourself, and tell me about a time you did something. USAA's own advice is to structure your answers with the STAR method and to research the company first. Its mission is serving the military community and their families, and its core values are service, loyalty, honesty and integrity.
The details below come from USAA's hiring tips page and its careers FAQ. Where USAA doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

How long does the USAA hiring process take?
USAA doesn't publish a timeline. Its FAQ says the length of each stage "varies per role and candidate". Only candidates who meet a position's qualifications are notified by email, so you may not hear back if you aren't selected.
Does USAA have an assessment?
For some roles, yes. USAA says qualified candidates are emailed instructions for any employment assessments, and that you should complete them before moving to the next step. Completing all job-related assessments is one of its basic qualifications.
USAA doesn't publish what the assessments contain, how long they take or how they're scored. If yours shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that works in general.
What is the USAA interview process?
If you're selected, a member of USAA's staffing team contacts you, and its digital interview scheduling assistant sends you a text to arrange your interview. If you're a good match, USAA then schedules a formal interview with a member of the hiring team. After interviews, a hiring manager reviews the feedback and selects an applicant.
USAA doesn't publish how long each interview lasts, whether it's by phone, video or in person, or how many people you'll meet. Ask when the interview is scheduled. USAA's advice on dress: when in doubt, business formal.
What happens after the USAA interview?
A hiring manager reviews the interviewers' feedback and selects an applicant. If you get a contingent offer, you must meet the requirements of a comprehensive background check, which includes drug testing, and complete Form I-9. USAA says its background checks typically go back at least five years, and that a felony or misdemeanour conviction isn't an automatic bar unless the law requires it.
USAA recommends sending a thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview.
What does USAA look for?
USAA says it wants people who "share the same passion for service", whether or not they have military ties. Its about page names four core values:
| Value | How to show it in an interview |
|---|---|
| Service | Examples of putting a customer's or colleague's needs first |
| Loyalty | Examples of following through for a team or a customer over time |
| Honesty | Examples of giving difficult news or admitting a mistake |
| Integrity | Examples of doing the right thing when a shortcut was available |
Common USAA interview questions and how to answer them
USAA doesn't publish a question list. These are questions to prepare for, built from its tips page, its values and its mission. Answer the behavioural ones in STAR form, as USAA recommends.
1. Tell me about yourself.
USAA names this as a common question to prepare. Keep it short: your background, the skills that match the posting and why this role is your next step.
2. Why USAA?
USAA tells you to research the company, its culture and priorities. Its mission is serving the military community and their families. Connect your answer to that, whether through your own service, a military family or a genuine interest in serving that community.
3. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
This maps to service, the first of USAA's core values. Show what the customer needed, what you did beyond the minimum and the result.
4. Tell me about a time you had to tell someone something they didn't want to hear.
Honesty is a core value. Show how you were direct and kind at the same time, and what happened next.
5. Tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma at work.
Integrity is a core value, and USAA hires for insurance and banking roles. Pick a real example where you chose the right path over the easy one.
6. Tell me about a time you stayed committed to a team through a hard period.
This maps to loyalty. Show how you supported your team and what you contributed.
7. Tell me about a time you handled an upset customer. (customer service and claims roles)
USAA's entry-level paths include customer service and claims adjusting. Show how you listened, stayed calm, solved the problem and followed up.
8. How would your military experience apply to this role? (veterans and military spouses)
USAA encourages transitioning service members to use their military experience and offers a military skills translator on its site. Translate your duties into the language of the job posting, with specific results.
9. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
USAA's entry-level paths come with paid training. Show that you learn fast and apply what you learn.
10. Tell me about a mistake you made and how you handled it.
Owning a mistake shows honesty and integrity. Say what went wrong, what you did to fix it and what you changed afterwards.
11. Tell me about a time you worked with people who saw things differently from you.
USAA's about page describes a culture where every voice and idea is heard. Show how you listened and what the group decided.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
USAA tells you to prepare questions. Ask about the team, how success is measured in the first months and what training new joiners get.

Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with USAA and doesn't use USAA's interview questions or assessments.
