Uniqlo's US careers site, careers-us.uniqlo.com, sends every applicant to the same place: its Workday application portal. You pick a pathway (store roles, the Store Support Center or early careers), apply for a specific job, and Uniqlo contacts you if it wants to interview you.
Everything below about the process comes from Uniqlo's US careers site, its current job postings and Fast Retailing's careers pages (Fast Retailing is Uniqlo's parent company), linked as we go. Where those pages don't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from what Uniqlo's postings and principles say it wants.
The Uniqlo hiring process at a glance
| Stage | What happens | What Uniqlo's pages say |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Choose a pathway | Store roles, Store Support Center or early careers (UMC and internships). | Each pathway "opens our official Workday application portal" |
| 2. Apply | Apply for a specific job on Workday. | Postings set out the role's duties and availability rules |
| 3. Interview | Meet the store or hiring team. | No format, length or number of rounds published |
| 4. Offer | Uniqlo contacts you if you're selected. | No timeline published |
What is the Uniqlo hiring process?
You apply online for a specific role, and Uniqlo gets in touch if you're selected for an interview. Uniqlo's Canadian store page puts it simply: "Click below and apply! Our team will be in touch with you shortly."
The application
- Start at the careers site. careers-us.uniqlo.com lists US openings by pathway. Store roles include Retail Sales Associate, Supervisor in Training, Loss Prevention, Visual Merchandiser and Alterations Specialist.
- You finish on Workday. Each posting ends with "You'll be redirected to our Workday application portal."
- Read the availability rules. Store postings spell out what full-time and part-time staff must be able to work (see below). Only apply for a schedule you can keep.
- You won't be asked about past pay. Store postings say Uniqlo "will not ask candidates for their current or past salary".

Does Uniqlo have an assessment or online test?
Uniqlo doesn't mention one. None of the US store postings or careers pages we checked refers to a pre-hire test, so treat claims about a Uniqlo assessment on prep sites as unconfirmed. If you're sent one, the invitation should say what it involves.
Store roles do come with a physical requirement written into the posting: standing for long periods and being able to "push, pull or move objects of at least 25 pounds". Expect to be asked whether you can do that.
What is the Uniqlo interview like?
Uniqlo doesn't publish its interview format, length or number of rounds, and it may differ between stores and roles. When the store contacts you, ask who you'll meet, how long to allow and whether to bring anything.
What Uniqlo does publish is what the job involves. Its Retail Sales Associate posting lists:
- meeting and exceeding sales goals;
- keeping visual and cleanliness standards;
- managing customer needs "by utilizing the UNIQLO service standard, following the UNIQLO Fundamental Principles and saying the 6 standard phrases";
- fitting rooms, cashier duties and processing shipments so that "all merchandise is represented on the floor in full size run";
- helping management identify and resolve problems in the store.
Uniqlo doesn't list the 6 standard phrases on its careers pages, so don't worry about memorising them before the interview. In the interview, show that you're comfortable following a defined service standard and being consistent with every customer.
What does Uniqlo look for?
Fast Retailing's company principles, the FAST RETAILING WAY, are the clearest public statement of what Uniqlo values. Its four values are:
| Value | What it means in a store interview |
|---|---|
| Approaching issues from the customer perspective | Every answer about your work should come back to the customer |
| Embracing innovation and challenge | Show you question how things are done and try to improve them |
| Respecting and supporting individuals to foster both corporate and personal growth | Talk about helping teammates and growing yourself |
| Committing to ethical standards and correctness | Be straight about mistakes, rules and honesty |
The same page lists principles that read like interview prompts: "Do everything possible for our customers", "Pursue excellence and aim for the highest possible level of achievement", "Achieve strong results through the promotion of diversity and teamwork" and "Move speedily and decisively in everything we do". Uniqlo's Canadian store page asks for "an ambitious, hard-working individual who welcomes new challenges" and the "ability to think on your feet and problem solve".
Common Uniqlo interview questions
Uniqlo doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the questions to prepare for, based on what its postings and principles say it wants. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for the "tell me about a time" ones; our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Uniqlo?
Be specific. Mention LifeWear, Uniqlo's idea of "simple, high-quality clothing made for everyone, everywhere", or a product you actually wear. Then link it to growth: Uniqlo's US careers site stresses career pathways and "performance-based advancement".
2. What does great customer service look like to you?
The first of Uniqlo's values is approaching issues "from the customer perspective". Describe service that is quick, friendly and consistent, and give a real example of how you delivered it.
3. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was frustrated.
Choose a story where you listened, found the actual problem, fixed it or found someone who could, and checked the customer left happy.
4. How would you handle a busy fitting room and a queue at the till at the same time?
Fitting rooms and cashier duties are both in the Sales Associate posting. Explain how you'd prioritise, when you'd call for help, and how you'd keep each customer informed while they wait.
5. Uniqlo has set service standards and phrases for every associate. How do you feel about following a defined routine?
The posting asks associates to say "the 6 standard phrases" and follow the Fundamental Principles. Show that you see consistency as part of good service, and that you'd still treat each customer as a person.
6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team to hit a goal.
Fast Retailing's principles ask staff to "achieve strong results through the promotion of diversity and teamwork". Pick an example where your part mattered and say what the team achieved.
7. Tell me about a time you had to work fast without cutting corners.
Speed is one of Fast Retailing's principles: "Move speedily and decisively in everything we do." Processing shipments and getting stock onto the floor in full size runs is part of the job. Describe how you stayed quick and accurate.
8. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way of doing something.
Uniqlo values "innovation and challenge", which Fast Retailing describes as "questioning our past practices". A small, real improvement you made is better than a big idea you never tried.
9. Tell me about a goal you set yourself that was hard to reach.
The principles ask staff to "pursue excellence and aim for the highest possible level of achievement" and say setting low goals limits you. Say what the goal was, what you did, and what you learned even if you fell short.
10. What is your availability?
Answer honestly and match what you put in your application. The Boston Sales Associate posting asks full-time staff to be available for at least a five-day week and allows limited restrictions, with only one permitted Friday to Sunday. Part-time staff need at least 12 hours a week of availability, including weekends. Religious exemptions are considered.
11. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?
Uniqlo's US careers site quotes store staff and managers on growing into leadership, and its postings mention "a clear path to promotion opportunities every 3 months based on individual performance". If you want to grow into a supervisor or manager, say so.
12. Tell me about a time you saw a colleague do something against the rules. What did you do?
"Committing to ethical standards and correctness" is one of Uniqlo's four values, and the Canadian posting asks associates to "understand, respect and follow the company's code of conduct". Show you'd act calmly and involve a manager.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask how new associates are trained on the service standard, what a typical shift looks like, and how promotion reviews work in this store.
For more practice, see our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions.
What is the UMC programme?
UMC stands for UNIQLO Management Candidate. It's Uniqlo's graduate route into store leadership. Fast Retailing's global UMC page says that right after joining you are "assigned to the front lines of store management". Uniqlo's US early careers page shows a "24-month journey" from candidate to store manager, starting with onboarding and floor experience as a Sales Associate.
Uniqlo also runs a 10-week Store Management Internship in the US. Its early careers page says internship applications "will officially open in Fall 2026". In a UMC or internship interview, expect more questions about leading people, making decisions and why you want a retail management career.
How to prepare for a Uniqlo interview
- Read the posting line by line and prepare an example for each responsibility: customers, fitting rooms, cashier, stock and teamwork.
- Visit a Uniqlo store before your interview. Notice how staff greet customers and how the floor is organised.
- Read the FAST RETAILING WAY and pick one value you can back with a story.
- Know your availability and check it against the posting's full-time or part-time rules.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering a customer problem, teamwork, working fast and accurately, and improving something.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Shop-floor work rewards judgement under pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with Uniqlo and doesn't use Uniqlo's assessments or questions.
