Advance Auto Parts Hiring Process and Interview Questions

The short answer

Advance Auto Parts hires through an online application on its careers site, an interview and an offer. Some store roles add a parts test: the Retail Parts Pro posting requires you to “successfully complete the Parts Knowledge Assessment”. Advance doesn’t publish an interview format or a timeline, so prepare for questions on customer service, parts knowledge and availability, shaped by its “Customer First” behaviour.

  • You apply through Advance’s Workday application, linked from each posting on jobs.advanceautoparts.com.
  • Driver and Retail Parts Pro postings require a valid driver’s licence; drivers need an acceptable driving record.
  • ASE certification is preferred for parts roles but not required.
  • Advance doesn’t publish what the Parts Knowledge Assessment contains or how it’s scored.

Advance Auto Parts hires through an online application, an interview and an offer, with a Parts Knowledge Assessment for some store roles. Advance doesn't publish an interview format or how long the process takes.

The details below come from Advance's careers site, its culture page and three store postings we read in October 2026. Where Advance doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Advance doesn't publish its questions.

What is the Advance Auto Parts hiring process?

You find a role on Advance's careers site, apply through its Workday application, complete any assessment the role requires, interview, and get an offer if you're selected. Advance doesn't publish a timeline, so treat figures you read on job review sites as unconfirmed.

Which jobs Advance hires for

Advance's careers site lists retail stores, distribution centres, corporate headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, and its professional business. Advance also supplies independently owned Carquest stores.

Its culture page shows example store career paths that include Driver (Part-Time), Key Carrier, Retail Parts Pro, Commercial Parts Pro, Assistant General Manager, General Manager, Customer Account Manager and District Manager.

What the store postings ask for

RoleKey requirements in the posting we read
Store DriverValid driver's licence with an acceptable driving record; high school diploma or equivalent; safe driving; automotive parts experience preferred
Retail Parts ProComplete the Parts Knowledge Assessment; working knowledge of automotive systems; 3 to 5 years of automotive parts experience; valid driver's licence; Word and Excel
Assistant General Manager2 to 3 years managing a retail team of 10 to 20; reading a P&L; ASE P2 certified or ASE ready equivalent listed as a success factor

All three ask for English (Spanish a plus) and the ability to work days, evenings and weekends. The Driver and Retail Parts Pro postings also ask for basic maths with fractions and decimals. Store roles involve battery installation and testing and wiper installs, and the Driver and Assistant General Manager postings ask you to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.

Does Advance Auto Parts have an assessment?

Yes, for some roles. The Retail Parts Pro posting lists "Successfully complete the Parts Knowledge Assessment" among the essential job skills. The Store Driver and Assistant General Manager postings we read don't mention it.

Advance doesn't publish what the assessment contains, how long it takes, how it's scored or whether you can retake it. Going by its name and the posting's success factors, expect it to test what the job needs:

  • Automotive systems: the posting lists internal engine, suspension, brakes, electronics and exhaust.
  • Parts lookup and sourcing: finding the right part, including special orders.
  • Testing and diagnostics: the posting expects expertise with testing and diagnostic equipment for DIY services.

Treat specific question counts or pass marks you read elsewhere as unconfirmed. The best preparation is the job knowledge itself: revise the systems above and the parts that go with them. If you've studied for ASE certification, that work overlaps; Advance lists ASE certification as preferred for the role.

What is the Advance Auto Parts interview process?

Advance doesn't publish its interview format, who interviews you or how long it lasts. Ask when you're contacted.

What Advance does publish is what it values. Its careers site gives its values as "Inspire the team, Serve the customer, Grow the business", and its culture page lists five leadership behaviours:

Advance behaviourWhat it means in a store interview
Lead From the FrontYou set the standard, even without a title
Customer FirstYou put the customer's problem ahead of the task in your hands
Win as OneYou work as "ONE TEAM", helping colleagues when the store is busy
Coach & Grow TalentYou share what you know and want to learn more
Act with PurposeYou know why each task matters and finish it

Common Advance Auto Parts interview questions

These are questions to prepare for, based on Advance's postings and behaviours. Answer "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at Advance Auto Parts?

Connect your answer to cars and to customers. Mention a part of the job you'd enjoy, such as diagnosing a problem with a customer, and Advance's "Customer First" behaviour. If you want to grow, mention the store career paths on its culture page.

2. What automotive experience do you have?

The Retail Parts Pro posting asks for working knowledge of engines, suspension, brakes, electronics and exhaust. Be specific about what you've worked on, and honest about what you haven't. Say how you'd look up a part you don't know.

3. A customer describes a noise from their car but doesn't know what part they need. What do you do?

Show your process: ask questions about the symptoms, the vehicle and when it happens, use the parts lookup and diagnostic tools, and recommend the right part. Don't guess. Advance expects "advanced identification, trouble shooting and project assistance" from a Retail Parts Pro.

4. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.

This tests "Customer First". Pick a specific example where you solved the customer's problem, and say how it ended.

5. How would you recommend extra products without being pushy?

The postings mention upselling and project recommendations. Explain that you'd suggest only what the job needs, such as gaskets or fluid with a part, and explain why.

6. What is your availability?

The postings ask for days, evenings and weekends as needed. Give your real availability and make sure it matches your application.

7. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team under pressure.

This tests "Win as One". Describe a busy shift where you helped a colleague and what the team achieved.

8. How do you handle a customer who wants a refund you can't give?

Show that you'd stay calm, explain the policy clearly, look for what you can do, and bring in the manager on duty if needed.

9. Tell me about your driving record. (Driver roles)

The Store Driver posting requires a valid driver's licence with an acceptable driving record and lists safe driving as a success factor. Be honest, and mention any experience with deliveries.

10. How do you keep inventory accurate?

Store roles include truck put-away, back stock and cycle counts. Describe how you check your work and what you'd do if a count didn't match.

11. Tell me about a time you taught someone something.

This tests "Coach & Grow Talent", and it matters more for key holder and manager roles. Pick an example where you trained a new colleague or explained something clearly to a customer.

12. How would you handle opening or closing the store? (Key holder and manager roles)

The Retail Parts Pro posting includes key holder duties: task assignment, safety and open/close duties. Show that you'd follow the checklist, keep the store safe and hand over clearly to the next shift.

How to prepare for the Advance Auto Parts hiring process

  1. Read the posting closely, including the "Essential Job Skills" list.
  2. Revise automotive systems if the role lists the Parts Knowledge Assessment: engine, suspension, brakes, electronics and exhaust.
  3. Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customer service, teamwork, a difficult customer and accuracy. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  4. Learn the five behaviours on Advance's culture page and have an example for two or three.
  5. Have your licence details ready for driver and parts roles.
  6. Know your availability for days, evenings and weekends.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, ASE certification and career paths.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The parts counter rewards judgement with real customers and real problems, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Advance Auto Parts and doesn't use Advance's assessments or questions.
