Ace Hardware interviews look for people who are friendly, dependable and helpful to customers, whether or not they already know hardware. Most Ace stores are independently owned, and the store owner runs hiring: you apply to the store's posting, interview with the store and get an offer from the owner.
The details below come from Ace's careers site, its Life at Ace page and three current store postings. Where Ace doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Ace doesn't publish its questions.
The Ace Hardware hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | Who runs it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Find a store posting | Search careers.acehardware.com by country, state and city. | You |
| 2. Application | Click Apply Now on the posting. Your application goes to that store. | The independent store owner |
| 3. Interview | Format, length and rounds aren't published and vary by store. | The independent store owner |
| 4. Offer | If you're selected, the store contacts you. | The independent store owner |
Ace doesn't publish a timeline for any of these steps.
What is the Ace Hardware hiring process?
For store jobs, you apply to a specific store, and that store's owner handles your application, interview and offer. Every store posting we read carries the same "Notice to Applicant about this Employer". It says the store is "independently owned and operated", that the owner "alone is responsible for" hiring decisions, and that Ace Hardware Corporation "will not receive a copy of any applications" and "does not control interviews and/or hiring decisions". If you're hired, the store owner is your only employer.
That means the process can differ from one Ace store to the next. A family business with a few locations may hire differently from a larger group of stores. Ask the store what its process looks like when it contacts you.
Which jobs Ace hires for
Ace's careers site groups jobs into seven areas:
- Retail: store jobs such as cashier, store associate, stocker and receiving.
- Warehouse and distribution.
- Corporate: roles supporting the wider Ace business.
- Skilled trades: through Ace Hardware Home Services.
- Wholesale: through Emery Jensen.
- Customer care.
- International: through Ace International Hardware Corporation.
This guide focuses on store jobs, which is where most people searching for Ace interviews are applying.
The application
- Search by location. Filter by country, state and city, then open the posting for the store you want.
- Read the store introduction. Many postings describe the store's own history and owners. Use it in your interview.
- Ask Grace. Ace's careers site has a recruiting assistant called Grace that answers questions about openings and benefits.
- Need help? Ace's careers site lists careers@acehardware.com for assistance.

What is the Ace Hardware interview process?
Ace doesn't publish an interview format, and because each store hires for itself, it varies. Ask the store who you'll meet and how long to allow.
What the store postings do publish is what they want. Across the three we read:
| What the postings ask for | What to show in your interview |
|---|---|
| "Outgoing, friendly, and helpful" people | A time you went out of your way to help someone |
| Helping customers find everything for their project "in one trip" | That you ask what the project is before suggesting products |
| Dependable, hard-working team members | Your attendance record and how you handle busy days |
| Weekend and open availability (one posting) | Clear, honest availability |
| 6 to 8 hours on your feet and lifting 25 to 50 lbs | That you can meet the physical side of the job |
| No hardware experience required | Willingness to learn; any DIY knowledge is a bonus |
The Morenci, Arizona posting described four store jobs:
- Cashier: greeting customers, answering questions, resolving issues, running the register and handling cash accurately.
- Store associate: helping customers solve problems, recommending products, filling propane, cutting keys and threading pipe.
- Stocker: unloading, stocking and facing product, and keeping inventory accurate.
- Receiving: checking shipments, processing paperwork, returning damaged product and operating a forklift.
Two of the postings we read described the store as a "Drug-Free environment".
Does Ace Hardware have an assessment?
Ace's careers site and the store postings we read don't describe a pre-hire test or assessment. Because each store owner sets its own process, ask the store if you're unsure. If a store asks how you'd handle customer situations, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.
What does Ace Hardware look for?
Ace says it wants to be "the most helpful hardware store on the planet", and its values spell W.E.L.I.G.H.T. Store owners run hiring, but these values are a good guide to what an Ace store wants.
| Ace value | What Ace says | What it means in an interview |
|---|---|---|
| Winning | "We win with and through people, for helpful is our weapon in the world." | Helping customers is how the store succeeds |
| Excellence | "We aspire to be the best, to continuously improve" | You care about getting details right and getting better |
| Love | "Love the people, love the work and love the results." | You enjoy helping customers and teammates |
| Integrity | "We need to be able to trust each other." | You're honest, reliable and ethical |
| Gratitude | "We are blessed to be in the business of serving others." | You see serving customers as the point of the job |
| Humility | "A humble, modest and respectful attitude" | You admit what you don't know and ask |
| Teamwork | Fighting "the natural tendency for control and credit in favor of collaboration" | You share the work and the credit |
Common Ace Hardware interview questions
These are questions to prepare for, based on Ace's values and store postings. Answer "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Why do you want to work at Ace Hardware?
Mention the store itself. Most Ace stores are locally owned, and the postings talk about being part of the community. Say why you want to work at this store, and connect it to Ace's aim of being the most helpful hardware store.
2. Do you have any hardware or DIY experience?
The postings say experience is a plus but not required, because the store trains you. Be honest. Share any projects you've done at home, then say you're keen to learn. That fits Ace's value of humility.
3. A customer asks about a product you don't know. What do you do?
Show that you'd ask what the project is, find out the answer from a colleague or the product information, and come back to the customer. Never guess. The postings ask you to help customers get everything they need in one trip, and wrong advice means a second trip.
4. Tell me about a time you went out of your way to help someone.
This is the core of "helpful". Pick a specific example from work, school or volunteering where you did more than the minimum, and say what difference it made.
5. How would you help a customer who doesn't know what they need for a project?
Walk through it: ask what they're trying to do, ask about the space or materials, suggest the products, and check they have the tools and extras they'll need. Mention offering services the store provides, such as key cutting.
6. What is your availability?
Some postings ask for weekend and open availability. Give your real availability and stick to it.
7. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
This tests Teamwork. Ace describes it as choosing collaboration over control and credit, so pick an example where you shared the work and the credit.
8. How would you handle an unhappy customer?
Show that you'd listen, stay calm, apologise for the problem and either fix it or get the manager. Store owners care about repeat local customers, so say you'd want them to come back.
9. Are you comfortable with the physical side of the job?
The postings ask for 6 to 8 hours on your feet and lifting 25 to 50 lbs, and one mentions climbing a step stool or ladder. Answer honestly and say you'd follow safe lifting practice.
10. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work.
This tests Integrity and Humility. Pick a real mistake, say how you owned up to it, how you fixed it and what you changed afterwards.
11. How do you handle cash and keep it accurate?
For cashier roles, the Morenci posting lists cash handling and accuracy. Describe how you count, double-check and follow the till procedure.
12. What would you do if you saw a colleague doing something unsafe?
Store associates fill propane, cut keys and thread pipe, and receiving staff may drive a forklift. Show you'd speak up, follow safety rules and tell a manager if needed.
How to prepare for an Ace Hardware interview
- Read the posting and its store introduction. Learn the owner's name and the store's history if it's given.
- Visit the store if you can, and notice its departments and services.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering helping a customer, teamwork, a mistake you owned and reliability. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Learn the W.E.L.I.G.H.T. values and have an example for two or three of them.
- Know your availability, especially weekends.
- Bring two or three questions about training, the departments you'd work in and the schedule.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. On the shop floor, what counts is how you handle real customers, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Ace Hardware and doesn't use Ace's questions.
