Academy Sports + Outdoors interviews look for fast, friendly customer service, a real interest in sports and the outdoors, and a schedule that fits the store's. You apply online through Academy's careers site, interview with the store or hiring team, and get an offer if you're selected. Academy doesn't publish an interview format or a timeline.
The details below come from Academy's careers site, a Store Team Member posting we read in October 2026 and Academy's latest annual report. Where Academy doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Academy doesn't publish its questions.

What is the Academy Sports interview process?
Academy doesn't publish its interview format, who you'll meet or how long it lasts. Ask when you're contacted to schedule it.
What Academy does publish is what it wants from store Team Members. The Store Team Member posting we read describes the role as "responsible for ensuring a fast, friendly customer service" and lists these skills:
| What the posting asks for | What to show in your interview |
|---|---|
| Excellent customer service orientation | A time you helped a customer find the right product |
| Connecting and building rapport with customers who share sports and outdoor interests; bilingual a plus | Your own sports or outdoor interests and how you'd talk about gear |
| Problem solving and communication with customers and team members | A problem you sorted out at work or school |
| Handling several tasks with good organisation and attention to detail | How you keep on top of a busy shift |
| Reading and following safety rules, plan-o-grams and procedure manuals | That you follow procedures carefully |
| Flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays | Clear, honest availability |
The posting prefers a high school diploma or GED and previous related work experience. It also lists role-specific requirements:
- Fishing and Hunting Sales Team Members must meet federal and state requirements for selling and processing firearms transactions, and in Illinois must qualify for a FOID card.
- Outdoor Enthusiasts: four or more years of personal experience with outdoor hobbies, with fishing and hunting experience preferred.
- Asset Protection Team Members: a loss prevention or criminal justice background and CPR or first responder certification are a plus.
- Physical side: frequent walking and reaching, and occasionally lifting up to 60 pounds.
Does Academy Sports have an assessment?
Academy's careers pages and the posting we read don't describe a pre-hire test or assessment. If you're invited to one, the invitation should explain it. If an assessment asks how you'd handle realistic customer situations, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.
What does Academy look for in Team Members?
Academy's annual report for the year to 31 January 2026 gives its mission as "Fun for All" and lists seven core values. Use them to shape your answers.
| Academy core value | What it means in a store interview |
|---|---|
| Customer focus and service | You put the customer's needs first |
| Excellence in all we do | You care about doing a task properly |
| Responsible leadership | You take ownership, even without a title |
| Initiative with urgency | You spot what needs doing and do it quickly |
| Students of the business | You want to learn products and how the store works |
| Integrity always | You're honest, including when no one is watching |
| Positive impact on our communities | You care about the local customers and community |
The Store Team Member posting adds Academy's Purpose: "to make it easier for everyone to enjoy more sports and outdoors."
Common Academy Sports interview questions
These are questions to prepare for, based on Academy's postings and values. Answer "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Why do you want to work at Academy?
Connect your answer to Academy's Purpose of making it easier for everyone to enjoy sports and the outdoors. Name a department you'd like to work in and a sport or activity you know well. Keep it about the customers and the work.
2. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.
This tests "Customer focus and service". Pick a specific example: what the customer needed, what you did, and how it ended. If you haven't worked in retail, use a volunteer, school or team example where you helped someone.
3. A customer wants gear for a sport you don't know well. What do you do?
Academy wants you to help customers "navigate the abundance of choices" it offers. Show that you'd ask questions about what they need, use what you do know, and bring in a teammate who knows the department. Don't bluff.
4. What sports or outdoor activities are you into?
The posting asks for people who can build rapport with customers through sports and outdoor pursuits. Be specific and honest. A casual runner who knows running shoes is more useful on the shop floor than someone who claims to know everything.
5. What is your availability?
The posting lists flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays. Give your real availability, including any fixed commitments, and make sure it matches your application.
6. Tell me about a time you had several things to do at once.
The posting asks for the ability to execute multiple tasks with good organisation. Describe how you decided what to do first, and what you'd do if a customer needed help while you were restocking.
7. How would you handle an upset customer?
Show that you'd listen, stay calm, apologise for the problem, and either fix it or bring in a manager. A short STAR example from a past job works well here.
8. Tell me about a time you followed a procedure you didn't fully agree with.
This tests "Integrity always" and the posting's requirement to follow safety rules and procedure manuals. Show that you followed it, raised your concern the right way, and why rules matter in a store that sells firearms and ammunition.
9. Describe a time you took the initiative without being asked.
This tests "Initiative with urgency". Pick an example where you saw a problem, such as a messy display or a queue building, and dealt with it.
10. How do you work as part of a team?
Academy's careers site describes a workplace that values hard work, commitment and growth. Give an example where you helped a colleague or covered a gap, and what the team achieved.
11. How would you recommend a product without being pushy?
Explain that you'd ask what the customer needs, suggest what fits, and mention related items only when they're useful, such as socks with running shoes.
12. Where do you see yourself at Academy in a few years?
Academy lists store development programmes including the Manager in Training Program, Team Lead Development and Team Lead Pro. If you want to grow, say so, and mention that you'd want to learn the business first. That fits "Students of the business".
How to prepare for an Academy Sports interview
- Read the posting and the linked job description for the position you want.
- Pick your department and learn a few of the products it sells.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customer service, teamwork, initiative and a time you followed a rule. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Know your availability, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Learn Academy's seven core values and have an example ready for two or three of them.
- For Fishing and Hunting roles, be ready to show you take firearms rules and safety seriously.
- Bring two or three questions about training, the department and the schedule.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Day-to-day store work rewards judgement with real customers, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Academy Sports + Outdoors and doesn't use Academy's questions.
