State Farm Interview Questions and Hiring Process 2026

The short answer

State Farm hires in five steps: you apply and create a profile, complete a pre-employment or language assessment if the role needs one, interview by video and/or with a hiring manager, view your offer in your profile, and have it finalised after a background check. Prepare examples that show its shared values: quality service and relationships, integrity and financial strength.

  • State Farm doesn’t publish its interview questions, the number of rounds or a hiring timeline.
  • Assessments apply to some positions only, and State Farm doesn’t publish what they contain.
  • State Farm bans AI tools during its assessments and interviews unless required by law or approved as an accommodation.
  • Your offer shows the position, location, salary and start date, and is final only after a background check.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with State Farm and doesn’t use State Farm’s assessments or questions.

State Farm says its interview "gives us a chance to learn more about your skills and experience", and that it may happen by video and/or with a hiring manager. The questions below are built around what State Farm says it stands for, and each comes with how to answer it for State Farm specifically.

State Farm doesn't publish its interview questions or a hiring timeline. Everything about the process here comes from State Farm's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where State Farm doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the State Farm hiring process?

You apply online, complete an assessment if the role requires one, interview, receive an offer through your candidate profile, and pass a background check. State Farm sets these five steps out on its employment process page and calls the process "simple and mobile-friendly".

Its careers site groups corporate jobs into areas such as claims and investigation, customer service, sales support, underwriting and actuarial, technology and UX, and research and data analytics. It also runs internship and military hiring pages.

This guide covers State Farm's corporate hiring. State Farm describes its agents as independent contractor agents, and its employment process page doesn't cover jobs in an agent's office. If you're applying to work for a local agent, ask that office how it hires.

How do you apply to State Farm?

Find a role on jobs.statefarm.com and submit an application. You'll be asked to create a profile as part of it, and State Farm asks you to keep that profile current, because it's also where your offer appears later.

If nothing fits yet, you can join State Farm's talent community or set up job alerts from the careers site.

Does State Farm have an assessment?

Some positions do. State Farm says that "for some positions, you may be asked to complete pre-employment and/or language proficiency assessments." It doesn't publish what the assessments contain, how long they take or how they're scored, so treat question counts or pass marks you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.

If your assessment shows you work scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.

State Farm's AI Standards for Candidate Integrity apply here. Candidates may not use AI tools during an assessment or interview, except where required by law or approved as a reasonable accommodation, and State Farm says it can disqualify candidates who do. It also asks you not to share assessment material.

What is the State Farm interview process?

State Farm says interviews "may be completed via a video interview and/or with a hiring manager". The interview is where it learns about your skills and experience, and where you learn about the role and the work environment.

State Farm doesn't publish how many rounds there are, how long each lasts or who else joins. Your recruiter can tell you, and it's a reasonable thing to ask.

For first-time video interviewees, State Farm links a candidate guide and a video called "Digital interview done right" from its employment process page. Its integrity standards add practical points: check your internet connection, device and surroundings beforehand, take part yourself, and don't use chatbots, real-time coaching or scripted responses during the interview. If your video interview is recorded rather than live, our guide to one-way video interviews explains how that format works.

State Farm doesn't say its interviews are behavioural, but questions about how you handled real situations are common in most interviews. Prepare them in STAR form (situation, task, action, result).

State Farm interview questions and how to answer them

These are common interview questions, matched to what State Farm publicly says about itself. State Farm doesn't publish the questions it asks.

Its mission is to "help people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams". Its shared values are quality service and relationships, integrity and financial strength. Use them as the backbone of your answers.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one or two relevant strengths, and why this role at State Farm is the next step. For a claims or customer service role, lead with work where you helped people through a problem.

2. Why do you want to work at State Farm?

Tie your answer to its mission or values, and be specific. Helping people "recover from the unexpected" is a concrete reason for a claims role; State Farm's description of itself as "more like a community than a company", and its focus on volunteering, is a reason that fits most roles.

3. Tell me about a time you helped a customer through a stressful situation.

This maps to quality service and relationships, and to State Farm's mission. Pick a case where someone was worried or upset, and show how you listened, explained clearly and followed through.

4. Describe a time you did the right thing when it would have been easier not to.

Integrity is one of State Farm's three shared values, and its candidate standards open with honesty. Choose a real, modest example, such as correcting your own mistake or flagging an error, and say what it cost you and why you did it anyway.

5. Tell me about a time you built a lasting relationship with a customer or colleague.

State Farm puts relationships next to service in its values. Show how you earned trust over months or years, across many interactions.

6. How do you handle detailed, rules-based work without losing accuracy?

Underwriting, claims and compliance roles depend on accuracy. Describe the checks you use, a time they caught an error, and how you keep pace without cutting corners.

7. Tell me about a time you made a decision with incomplete information.

Insurance is about managing risk. Show how you weighed what you knew, what you didn't, who you asked, and how the decision turned out.

8. Tell me about a time you worked with a team to solve a problem.

State Farm talks about employees being "challenged, guided, and empowered". Show your own part clearly, and how you supported others.

9. Describe a time you had to explain something complicated to someone without your knowledge.

Policies, coverage and claims are complicated for customers. Show how you simplified without being inaccurate, and how you checked the person understood.

10. Tell me about a time you used data to improve a result.

This suits analytics, technology, underwriting and sales support roles. Name the data, the change you made and the result.

11. Tell me about a goal you set and reached.

Financial strength is one of State Farm's shared values. Pick a measurable goal, such as one about cost, accuracy or results, and show how you tracked progress.

12. What questions do you have for us?

Ask about the team, how success is measured in the first months, and training. State Farm's interview is also meant for you to learn about the role and the work environment, so use it.

What happens after the State Farm interview?

If you're selected, State Farm asks you to log in to your profile to view the job offer. It includes details about the position, location, salary and start date, and the next steps you need to take.

The offer is finalised "pending successful results from a background check". State Farm doesn't say what the check covers or how long it takes. Once it's done, State Farm tells you what to expect on your first day.

State Farm doesn't publish how it tells candidates who aren't selected, or how long to wait before applying again.

How to prepare for a State Farm interview

  1. Read the job posting closely and list the skills it asks for.
  2. Learn State Farm's mission and three shared values, and have one example for each value.
  3. Prepare five or six STAR stories covering customers, integrity, accuracy, teamwork and results. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you a bank to practise on.
  4. Watch State Farm's interview prep videos on its employment process page, especially if you have a video interview.
  5. Set up for video: reliable internet, a charged device and a quiet room, as State Farm's own standards advise.
  6. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.
  7. Answer in your own words. State Farm bans AI help and scripted responses during interviews unless expressly authorised.

Practising realistic work tasks
