Sherwin-Williams Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

For store and field roles, Sherwin-Williams hires in three published steps: an online application that takes about 15 minutes, a recorded HireVue video interview with a few behavioural questions (to finish within 7 days of the invitation), then an interview with the team in a store or, for some field roles, by Teams or phone. Expect questions about customer service, problem-solving and selling.

  • Sherwin-Williams’ values are Integrity, Service, Growth, Performance, People, Quality and Innovation.
  • Most store postings we read require you to be 18 or over and lift up to 50 lbs regularly, and many require a valid driver’s licence.
  • The Assistant Manager Trainee role starts with 6 to 8 weeks of training before Assistant Store Manager.
  • Sherwin-Williams never asks candidates for money, equipment purchases or bank details.

Sherwin-Williams' store and field job postings set out a three-step hiring process: an online application, a digital video interview on HireVue and an interview with the team. The steps below come from its postings and careers pages, checked on 27 October 2026. Corporate, research and IT roles may follow a different process, so check your posting.

What is the Sherwin-Williams hiring process?

You apply online, record a short video interview, then interview with the team if you're shortlisted. Sherwin-Williams publishes these steps under the heading "What is the Process to get Started?" in its store job postings.

Step 1: the online application

Search open roles on jobsearch.sherwin.com and apply to a specific position. Sherwin-Williams says to set aside 15 minutes to create your profile, and you can import your details from one of its job board partners. Read the minimum requirements first. The store postings we read require you to:

  • be at least 18;
  • hold a valid, unrestricted driver's licence (preferred rather than required for the Field Store Associate role);
  • lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 70 lbs on occasion, with or without reasonable accommodation;
  • work all scheduled hours, which may include evenings and weekends.

Some roles add a language requirement: the Bilingual Retail Sales Associate posting asks you to read, write and communicate in Spanish.

Step 2: the HireVue digital interview

After reviewing your application, Sherwin-Williams invites qualified candidates to a digital video interview through HireVue, its interview partner. It "will consist of a few behavioral based questions", and you can record it "anytime, anywhere". Sherwin-Williams asks that you complete it within 7 days of the invitation.

A one-way video interview means no live interviewer: you read or hear a question, then record your answer. Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how they work and how to set up. Sherwin-Williams doesn't publish the questions, how long you get per answer or how many attempts you're allowed, so read the instructions on your invitation carefully.

Step 3: the team interview

A member of the recruitment team reviews your video, and the top candidates are invited to meet the team. For store roles, that's in person "in a store, specialty wholesale branch, floorcovering facility or delivery service terminal". For the Lowe's-based Field Store Associate role, it's a virtual interview in Microsoft Teams or a phone call.

Sherwin-Williams doesn't publish how long the interview lasts or who will be in the room. The person who schedules it can tell you.

After the interview: offer and checks

Sherwin-Williams doesn't describe its offer step. Its store postings say that because the job involves contact with customers, which may include minors, and access to cash and merchandise, a review of criminal history is required. They also say applicants with arrest or conviction records will be considered in line with applicable fair-chance laws.

How long does the Sherwin-Williams hiring process take?

Sherwin-Williams doesn't publish an overall timeline. The only time limits it gives are about 15 minutes to create your application profile and 7 days to complete the HireVue video interview once you're invited.

Does Sherwin-Williams have an assessment?

The HireVue video interview is the screening step the store postings describe. They don't mention an aptitude, personality or skills test. If you're sent another assessment, the invitation will explain it. For sales roles, our guide to sales assessment tests covers the formats employers commonly use.

What does Sherwin-Williams look for?

Common Sherwin-Williams interview questions and how to answer them

Sherwin-Williams doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on the duties in its store and trainee postings and the values above. Answer the "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method. They work for both the HireVue recording and the team interview.

1. "Tell me about yourself."

Keep it to about a minute on video and two minutes in person. Cover your customer-facing or sales experience, one thing you're proud of, and why this role interests you.

2. "Why Sherwin-Williams?"

Its stated purpose is "to inspire and improve the world by coloring and protecting what matters". Connect that to something concrete: you enjoy helping people finish a project, you want to learn a trade-focused product, or you're aiming for the management path its trainee programme offers.

3. "Tell me about a time you gave excellent customer service."

This maps to Service and is the core of a store role. Choose an example where you worked out what the customer actually needed, solved it and followed up.

4. "How would you handle a professional painter who is unhappy with an order?"

The Assistant Manager Trainee postings mention selling to commercial customers such as painting contractors and resolving customer complaints. Show that you'd listen, check the facts, fix what you can straight away and keep the customer's business.

5. "Tell me about a time you had to get the details exactly right."

Store associates tint and mix products to customer specifications. Pick an example where precision mattered, explain how you checked your work, and link it to Quality.

6. "Tell me about a time you increased sales or grew an account."

Its sales careers page describes growing sales through customer relationship management and merchandising. Give the result you achieved and how you did it, such as suggesting the right add-on products or following up with a regular customer.

7. "Describe a time you solved a problem in a new way."

Sherwin-Williams names creative problem-solving as a key to its success, and Innovation is one of its values. Show the problem, the idea you tried and the result.

8. "Tell me about a time you were honest when it was difficult."

This maps to Integrity. A good answer shows you told a customer or manager something they didn't want to hear, such as a delay or a mistake, and handled it well.

9. "Tell me about a time you helped a teammate or trained someone."

People is a Sherwin-Williams value, and the trainee postings include training and managing staff. Describe how you explained the task, checked understanding and followed up.

10. For trainee and management roles: "Where do you see yourself in two years?"

The Assistant Manager Trainee postings describe 6 to 8 weeks of initial training, then Assistant Store Manager, with the aim of a Store Management role in 18 to 24 months. The postings we read say the programme is designed to prepare current employees; if you're a graduate applying from outside, look at the Management & Sales Training Program in the company's early-talent brochure instead. Show that you've read that path and want it, and mention whether you're open to relocating, which the posting lists as a preference.

11. "Are you available evenings and weekends?"

Store postings require you to work all scheduled hours, which may include evenings and weekends. Answer honestly and make sure it matches your application.

12. "What questions do you have for us?"

Ask about the store's main customers, how new staff are trained and what success looks like in the first few months. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise.

How to prepare for a Sherwin-Williams interview

  1. Check the minimum requirements in your posting (age, licence, lifting, hours) before you apply.
  2. Record the HireVue interview within 7 days, somewhere quiet, with good light and a stable connection.
  3. Prepare five or six STAR stories about customer service, accuracy, sales, teamwork, honesty and solving problems.
  4. Practise answering to a camera a few times before the real recording, and keep each answer focused.
  5. Visit a Sherwin-Williams store if you can, to see how it serves retail and professional customers.
  6. For trainee roles, learn the path from training to Assistant Store Manager and be ready to discuss it.
  7. Run a mock interview with someone who will give honest feedback.

Watch out for recruiting scams

Sherwin-Williams warns that scammers impersonate its recruiters. It says it does not ask candidates to purchase equipment, make any financial transactions or provide banking information, and that genuine emails come from a sherwin.com address. Apply only through the official careers site, and see its scam awareness alert if something looks wrong.
