In sales, interviews can mislead. The people who interview best are, unsurprisingly, often good at talking about themselves, and a confident conversation about past quotas tells you little about how the person handles a prospect who says "we already have a supplier". A sales assessment test is there to close that gap.
This guide explains what sales assessment tests are, the main types, which tools offer them, and which type fits which sales role.
Disclosure: Cohesyve publishes this guide and is one of the tools compared. Other vendors are described from their own public pages as of October 2026; their prices are on their sites.
What is a sales assessment test?
A sales assessment test is a pre-employment test designed to predict how well a candidate will perform in a sales role. It measures either the traits associated with selling, such as drive and competitiveness, or the selling itself, through a role-play or simulated call.
Employers use them before interviews, to decide who gets one, or between interview rounds, to check a shortlisted candidate's skill. For the employer's side of building one, see our sales skills assessment.
What types of sales assessment tests are there?
There are four main types, and they measure different things.
| Type | What it measures | Example | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales personality and aptitude questionnaire | Traits linked to sales performance | Criteria SalesAP: 140 items across Achievement, Cold Calling Initiative, Competitiveness, Sales Closing and Sales Disposition, with a Not / Basically / Highly Recommended rating | Quick, standardised, works at volume | Self-report: describes temperament, does not show selling |
| Cognitive ability test | Reasoning and learning speed | CCAT, Wonderlic, PI Cognitive | Predicts how fast someone picks up a product and process | Says nothing about conversations |
| Role-play or call simulation | Live selling behaviour: discovery, objections, closing | A recorded call with a simulated prospect | Closest to the job | Takes longer; needs a scoring rubric |
| Sales knowledge or skills test | Process knowledge, CRM use, written outreach | A cold email to a described prospect | Easy to score, quick | Knowing the method is different from doing it live |

Our candidate guide to the Caliper test explains what candidates experience with Talogy's questionnaire.
Which sales assessment fits which sales role?
The right test depends on what the role spends its day doing.
- SDRs and BDRs: a cold outreach task (an email or call opener to a described prospect) plus a short objection-handling role-play. See how to assess cold outreach and objection handling.
- Account executives: a discovery call simulation where the prospect holds back the real problem, followed by a negotiation. See assessing sales discovery and sales negotiation.
- Account managers: a renewal or upsell conversation with a customer who has a complaint. See assessing account management.
- Retail and inside sales at volume: a sales aptitude questionnaire such as SalesAP plus a short simulated customer conversation.
- Sales managers: a coaching role-play with an underperforming rep, a pipeline review task and a structured interview; see sales manager interview questions.

How do you test sales skills when hiring?
Test sales skills by having the candidate sell, in a short role-play built around your product and buyer, scored on a rubric you write in advance. A questionnaire can sit alongside it, but the role-play is the evidence.
- Write the scenario from a real deal: who the buyer is, what they care about, what they will object to, and what they are holding back.
- Write the rubric first. For a discovery call: did they find the real problem, quantify it, and agree a next step?
- Keep it short. One focused conversation tells you more than a long assessment battery.
- Run it the same way for everyone, live with a trained colleague or as a recorded or AI-run simulation.
- Review the recording in the interview. Ask the candidate what they would do differently; coachability is part of the signal.
Can you still get hired if you fail a sales assessment test?
Often, yes. Many employers use a sales assessment as one input among several, and a weak questionnaire result can be outweighed by a strong role-play or interview. Some employers do set a hard cut-off, especially at high volume.
For employers, the practical point is to decide in advance how results will be used and to apply that rule consistently. If a test result can be overridden, write down when and why.
Common questions
What is the best sales assessment test? For predicting selling, a role-play or call simulation built around your own sales motion. For a quick, standardised screen at volume, a sales aptitude questionnaire such as Criteria's SalesAP.
Are sales personality tests accurate? They describe tendencies, from the candidate's own answers. Use vendors that publish validation evidence, and treat the result as a prompt for interview questions.
How long does a sales assessment take? It varies by vendor and type. SalesAP has 140 items; a role-play can be a single short conversation. Ask each vendor for typical completion times.
Should SDR candidates do a written task? Yes, if writing outreach is a large part of the job. A cold email to a described prospect is quick to set and to score.
