SBI Interview Questions and PO Selection Process

The short answer

SBI interviews Probationary Officers in Phase-III, after an online prelims and mains: a psychometric test, a group exercise (20 marks) and a personal interview (30 marks). SBI doesn’t publish its interview questions, so prepare for questions on why you want to be a bank officer, banking and the economy, SBI’s values and your graduation subject. Junior Associate (clerk) hiring has no interview.

  • In the final PO merit list, the mains counts for 75 and the group exercise plus interview for 25. Prelims marks aren’t counted.
  • The psychometric test profiles your personality, and SBI places its findings before the interview panel.
  • SBI’s core values are Service, Transparency, Ethics, Politeness and Sustainability.
  • The specialist officer advert we checked uses shortlisting followed by an interview.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with SBI and doesn’t use SBI’s tests or questions.

SBI's interview comes at the end of its recruitment process, and only for officer posts. For Probationary Officers (POs), it sits in Phase-III alongside a psychometric test and a group exercise. SBI doesn't publish the questions it asks, so the questions below are ones to prepare for, built from what SBI says about the role and its values.

The process details come from SBI's own careers pages and its 2026 recruitment advertisements, linked as we go. Where SBI doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the SBI recruitment process?

SBI recruits through advertisements on its careers page, and the process depends on the post. POs take three phases ending in an interview. Junior Associates (the clerical cadre) take a prelims, a mains and, for some, a local language test, with no interview. The Specialist Cadre Officer advert we checked uses shortlisting followed by an interview.

  • Apply only through SBI's careers pages. SBI says recruitment details are published only on its official careers pages, and that it never publishes the names of shortlisted or selected candidates on the website.
  • PO eligibility in 2026: graduation in any discipline and an age of 21 to 30 as on 1 April 2026, with relaxations for some categories.
  • Limited attempts. The 2026 PO advert allows 6 chances for unreserved and EWS candidates, 9 for OBC and some PwBD candidates, and no limit for SC and ST candidates. Sitting the mains counts as a chance; sitting only the prelims doesn't.
  • Credit history matters. Candidates with defaults in their CIBIL record must clear the dues before joining, or the offer is withdrawn.
  • You may be posted anywhere in India.

What is in the SBI PO preliminary exam?

The prelims is an online objective test of 100 questions in one hour, with a separate 20-minute timer for each section:

SectionQuestionsTime
English Language4020 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude3020 minutes
Reasoning Ability3020 minutes

There is no sectional cut-off. SBI shortlists about 10 times the vacancies in each category for the mains, and a quarter of a question's marks is deducted for each wrong answer. Blank answers carry no penalty.

What is in the SBI PO main exam?

The mains has a three-hour objective test and a 30-minute descriptive paper that you type straight after it.

SectionQuestionsMarksTime
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude406050 minutes
Data Analysis & Interpretation306045 minutes
General Awareness / Economy / Banking Knowledge606045 minutes
English Language402040 minutes
Descriptive paper: an email, a situation analysis, and a report or precis33030 minutes

You must clear a cut-off in every section, including the descriptive paper, and a minimum aggregate. SBI then shortlists up to about three times the vacancies in each category for Phase-III. SBI decides the cut-offs and doesn't publish them in advance.

What is the SBI psychometric test?

SBI says the psychometric test is for personality profiling and that its findings are placed before the interview panel "to have a thorough perspective on the candidates". All questions are mandatory, and it may be taken in proctored mode or at an exam centre.

SBI doesn't publish its length or question style, so expect a personality questionnaire and answer it honestly and consistently. Our guide to psychometric assessments explains how personality profiling generally works.

What happens in the SBI group exercise and interview?

The group exercise carries 20 marks and the interview 30. SBI sets the minimum qualifying marks and doesn't publish the group exercise format, the interview length or who sits on the panel. Bring the documents your call letter lists: SBI may verify documents at the interview, including category and EWS certificates.

Your Phase-II and Phase-III marks are then normalised: the mains counts for 75 and the group exercise and interview for 25 of the final 100. You must qualify in both phases separately.

Does SBI interview Junior Associates (clerks)?

No. The 2026 Junior Associate advertisement has a prelims, a mains and a local language proficiency test for candidates who didn't study the state's language in class 10 or 12. The final merit list uses mains marks only. You apply for one state, and SBI expects you to read, write, speak and understand its specified local language.

How do SBI specialist officer interviews work?

SBI's October 2026 Specialist Cadre Officer advertisement describes "shortlisting followed by interview and CTC negotiation". Some senior posts in it also include a 10-minute presentation on your job profile, projects or milestones. Meeting the minimum qualification doesn't guarantee an interview; a shortlisting committee decides who is called.

Common SBI interview questions and how to answer them

SBI names five core values on its About Us page: Service, Transparency, Ethics, Politeness and Sustainability. Use them, and what the PO advert says about the role, to shape your answers. These are questions to prepare for, not questions SBI has published.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to a minute: your graduation subject, anything you've worked on or led, and why you're applying to be a bank officer. End on the role, not your hobbies.

2. Why do you want to join SBI as a Probationary Officer?

Be specific about the job. SBI's advert describes POs managing teams and working across its branch network, with continuous assessment through two years' probation. Say which part of that you want and why.

3. Why banking, when your degree is in another field?

SBI accepts graduates from any discipline, including engineering and medicine, so be ready to explain the switch. Link a skill from your degree, such as analysis or handling data, to work a bank officer does.

4. You may be posted anywhere in India. How do you feel about that?

SBI's advert says selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India. Answer honestly and show you've thought about it, for example a rural branch posting or a new language.

5. A customer is angry because a transaction failed. What do you do?

This tests Service and Politeness. Listen first, explain what you can check and by when, keep the customer informed and follow up. Avoid promising what you can't control.

6. A senior colleague asks you to skip a KYC step to save time. What do you do?

This tests Ethics and Transparency. Say you'd follow the rule, explain why politely, and escalate if pressed. Don't present a dramatic answer; a calm, procedural one is stronger.

7. What do you know about SBI's recent initiatives?

Read SBI's press releases and annual report before the interview and pick one or two items you can talk about. Don't quote figures you can't stand behind.

8. What is the role of the RBI, and what is the repo rate?

The mains tests economy and banking knowledge, so be ready to discuss it. Know how monetary policy affects lending and deposits, and check the latest policy decision on the RBI's website the week before.

9. What does financial inclusion mean to you?

Connect it to a bank officer's day-to-day work: opening accounts, explaining products clearly and serving customers who are new to banking. This links to Service and Sustainability.

10. Tell me about a time you led a group or resolved a disagreement.

POs manage teams, so expect leadership questions. Use the STAR method: situation, task, what you did, and the result. A college or volunteering example is fine.

11. How would you handle a heavy workload with several customers waiting?

Show how you prioritise, keep customers informed and stay accurate under time pressure. This links to Service: mention checking your work, since errors in banking cost customers.

12. Explain a concept from your graduation subject in simple terms.

Your degree is on your application, so be ready for it. Pick two or three core ideas you can explain clearly without jargon, as you would to a customer.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the probation period, the training before and after joining, or what new officers find hardest in their first branch. Leave pay out of it.

How to prepare for the SBI interview

  1. Read the current advertisement in full. The phases, cut-off rules and documents can change between years.
  2. Prepare your documents early. SBI may verify them at the interview, including category, EWS and educational certificates.
  3. Revise economy and banking basics you studied for the mains, and follow the news in the weeks before.
  4. Prepare four or five STAR stories on leadership, teamwork, customers and pressure. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  5. Practise speaking in a group for the group exercise: make your point briefly, listen, and build on what others say.
  6. Answer the psychometric test honestly. The panel sees the findings, so inconsistent answers will show.
  7. Do a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
  8. Trust only SBI's careers pages. SBI says it never publishes the names of shortlisted or selected candidates on its website.

Practising realistic work tasks

SBI's interview and descriptive paper both test how you'd handle real situations: a customer complaint, a report, an email. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with SBI and doesn't use SBI's tests or questions.
