Ross Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Ross doesn’t publish its interview questions; its core values and store role descriptions point to customer service, teamwork, working at pace, honesty and your availability. Prepare short stories that show its five core values: Integrity, Accountability, Respect, Learning and Humility. You apply online at jobs.rossstores.com or through a new-store hiring event; Ross doesn’t publish an interview format, a store assessment or a timeline.

  • Store jobs are retail associate, stock associate and store protection specialist.
  • Ross says all new associates follow an onboarding programme of 6 to 12 weeks with assigned training.
  • Hourly distribution centre roles are staffed through Ross’s partner, Adecco.
  • Ross says it uses AI in some recruitment processes, to generate text or enable search features.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Ross Stores and doesn’t use Ross’s questions or assessments.

Ross doesn't publish what its store interviews look for, but its core values and store role descriptions point to people who treat customers well, work well in a team, keep up when the store is busy, act honestly and can work the shifts the store needs. You apply online at jobs.rossstores.com, which covers both Ross Dress for Less and dd's Discounts, and Ross doesn't publish how long the process takes.

This guide sticks to what Ross publishes on its careers site. Where Ross doesn't say something, we say so instead of guessing.

What is the Ross hiring process?

You find a role on Ross's careers site, apply online, and the store contacts you if they want to interview you. If you're hired, you go through onboarding and training. Ross doesn't publish the steps in more detail than that.

Ross's careers site groups jobs into these areas:

  • Stores and retail management: retail associate, stock associate and store protection specialist; and, in management, assistant store manager, store manager, area supervisor and field leadership.
  • Buying and planning offices: in New York, Los Angeles and Boston.
  • Supply chain and distribution: keeping merchandise moving through the distribution centres.
  • Corporate: at the head office campus in Dublin, California.
  • Internships and early career: eight-week summer internships and entry-level programmes.

How do you apply for a job at Ross?

Search and apply at jobs.rossstores.com. You can search by location or on a map, sign up for job alerts for your area, or join Ross's talent community for career news.

A few things Ross's careers site says that affect how you apply:

  • New stores hire in bulk. Ross lists hiring events for new store openings, covering "all full and part-time positions". Check the event page for dates and times.
  • Hourly distribution centre jobs go through Adecco. Ross says these roles are "staffed through our partner, Adecco", so apply through Adecco for those.
  • Ross uses AI in some recruitment processes. It says this is "to generate text or enable search features".
  • Ross participates in E-Verify, the US government system that confirms work eligibility.
  • Accommodations: if you need one during the application, Ross asks you to contact its customer service department, which connects you with a local HR representative.

Does Ross have an assessment test?

Ross doesn't publish one for store roles, and its careers pages don't describe a pre-hire test. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire or assessment, answer as you actually work.

If it shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that works in general.

What is the Ross interview like?

Ross doesn't publish an interview format, length or who you'll meet. The person who schedules you can tell you; it's a reasonable thing to ask. At hiring events, check the listing for whether you need to apply or register first.

Ross describes working in its stores as "fast paced and dynamic", and its culture page lists five core values that "guide who we are and how we show up every day". Those values are the best guide to what your answers should show:

Core valueHow Ross defines it
Integrity"We do the right thing."
Accountability"We take ownership of our actions and grow from our experiences."
Respect"We appreciate each other as individuals and value different perspectives."
Learning"We are students of the business and develop our people."
Humility"We achieve success as a team."

How long does the Ross hiring process take?

Ross doesn't publish a timeline from application to offer. If you've applied and heard nothing after about a week, a short, polite call or visit to the store at a quiet time is reasonable.

What happens after you're hired at Ross?

Ross says all new associates "follow a robust onboarding program for 6-12 weeks that includes assigned training". Store associates get eLearning and on-the-job training, "supported by an experienced Associate". Ross also lists instructor-led courses, mentorship and internal career growth.

Ross publishes two store career paths:

  • Store management: from retail or stock associate to area supervisor, assistant store manager, store manager, district manager in training and district manager.
  • Loss prevention: from associate to store protection specialist, senior store protection specialist and area loss prevention manager.

Ross interview questions and how to answer them

Ross doesn't publish its interview questions. These follow from its core values and the store roles it describes. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one strength that matters in a store, and why you're applying. Lead with anything customer-facing, even if it was volunteering or school.

2. Why do you want to work at Ross?

Be specific. Ross says it takes pride in delivering value to customers and "bringing them the thrill of the treasure hunt". Say what you like about shopping there, and mention the training or the career paths if they matter to you.

3. What is your availability?

Be honest and exact, and make sure it matches your application. If you're applying to a new store, ask what the shifts look like around the opening.

4. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was frustrated.

Respect is a Ross core value: "We appreciate each other as individuals." Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when you needed to. Keep the focus on what the customer needed.

5. How would you keep a busy sales floor neat and stocked?

For retail and stock associate roles. Ross says its store customers enjoy "the thrill of a treasure hunt and finding the perfect deal", and that depends on a floor where they can find things. Talk about tidying as you go, returning items to the right place, getting new stock out quickly and checking with your team which areas need help first.

6. How do you handle a fast-paced shift?

Ross calls its stores "fast paced and dynamic". Give an example of a rush or a deadline and explain how you prioritised: customers first, then the most urgent task, and asking for help early.

7. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work.

Accountability is a Ross core value: "We take ownership of our actions and grow from our experiences." Pick a real, small mistake, say you owned it, fixed it and what you do differently now.

8. What would you do if you saw a customer you thought was shoplifting?

A likely question for store protection roles. Integrity means "We do the right thing", and Ross has a dedicated loss prevention path. Say you'd follow the store's procedure and tell a manager or the store protection team. Confronting the person yourself puts you and others at risk.

9. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a co-worker.

Respect is a core value: Ross appreciates "each other as individuals" and values "different perspectives". Show that you raised it calmly and privately, listened to their side and agreed a way forward.

10. Tell me about a time you worked well as part of a team.

Humility at Ross means "We achieve success as a team." Pick an example where you helped someone else finish a task or covered a gap, and give the team the credit.

11. Tell me about a time you had to learn something new quickly.

Learning is a Ross core value, and new associates go through weeks of training. Choose an example where you picked up a new task or system fast, and say how: asking questions, watching someone experienced, practising.

12. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?

Ross publishes career paths from associate to store management and to loss prevention. It's fine to say you'd like to move towards one of them, and why.

For more practice, our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you a wider bank to rehearse.

How to prepare for a Ross interview

  1. Pick the right role. Read the description on jobs.rossstores.com and apply for work that fits your availability.
  2. Know the five core values. Integrity, Accountability, Respect, Learning and Humility. Have a short story for each.
  3. Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, busy periods, mistakes you owned and learning quickly.
  4. Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
  5. Visit a store if you can, so you can talk about how it looks and feels as a shopper.
  6. Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how people progress in the store.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The first weeks on the job reward judgement with customers and tasks, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Ross Stores and doesn't use Ross's questions or assessments.
