Publix interview questions cover four things, by Publix's own account: your work experience, your availability, your skills and why you want to work at Publix. The questions below are built around those and around Publix's mission statement, and each comes with how to answer it for Publix specifically.
Everything about the process here comes from Publix's own careers site and corporate pages, linked as we go. Where Publix doesn't say something, we say so.

How do you apply for a job at Publix?
Store jobs are applied for online through Publix's retail application at apply.publix.jobs. Publix's tips for getting a job and FAQs add:
- Apply to more than one. You can apply for several positions and up to three stores at the same time.
- Minimum age. Publix hires for select store positions starting at 14.
- Keep it active. Store applications remain active for 30 days. Publix asks you to update yours every 30 days so managers can see it.
- Open availability helps. Publix says its stores are often busiest during nights and weekends, and that open availability gives you a better chance of an interview.
- List relevant experience. Publix says managers often look for experience in retail, customer service or food preparation.
- Introduce yourself. Publix suggests visiting the store, introducing yourself to someone on the management team and saying you've applied. It has a blog post on how to do it.
Does Publix have an assessment?
The store application includes one. Publix says the online application asks "a series of questions that help us measure your customer service and problem-solving skills", and advises: "Slow down and think about your answers." For corporate roles, Publix says the process may include additional assessments.
Publix doesn't publish what the questions contain, how they're scored or whether there's a pass mark. Treat specific question lists you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.
If your questions show you workplace scenarios and ask what you would do, that's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general. A few practical points:
- Take your time. Publix itself says to slow down.
- Think like a customer. Publix's mission puts customer value first, so the answer that serves the customer well is usually the one to look at closely.
- Answer as you actually work. There's no published answer key.
What is the Publix interview process like?
If you're selected, a store manager contacts you by phone to set up the interview. Publix's applicant resources say to keep your application up to date so they can reach you. The interview covers your work experience, availability, skills and why you want to work at Publix.
Publix doesn't publish how long store interviews last or how many rounds there are. For corporate roles, it says hiring can take several weeks or longer and may include multiple interviews.
Publix's own interview advice, from its careers blog:
- Arrive 15 minutes early, dressed business-professional, and bring a resume.
- Research Publix's history, community involvement and culture before you go.
- Prepare three to five questions for the interviewer.
- Keep your introduction brief, without too much personal detail.
- Listen carefully. Publix says you don't have to answer immediately, and you can ask for a question to be repeated.
- For a virtual interview, test your setup first.
- Send a thank-you note afterwards. Publix recommends a handwritten one that thanks the hiring manager and says again why you're a good fit.
Publix interview questions and how to answer them
Publix doesn't publish a question list. These are questions to prepare for, based on the four areas Publix says its interviews cover and on its mission statement. The mission is to be "the premier quality food retailer in the world", and commits Publix to being passionately focused on customer value, intolerant of waste, dedicated to the dignity, value and employment security of its associates, devoted to stewardship for its stockholders and involved as responsible citizens in its communities.
Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for the "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide walks through it.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Publix's own tip is to keep this brief and avoid too much personal information. Cover your work or school experience, one strength and why you're applying, in under a minute.
2. Why do you want to work at Publix?
Publix tells candidates to research its history, community involvement and culture, so use one of those. It's employee-owned, and in October 2026 it pointed to its promote-from-within culture, where associates can start in entry-level positions and work up to management. Say which of those matters to you and why.
3. What is your availability?
Publix lists availability as one of the four things its interviews cover, and says stores are often busiest during nights and weekends. Be honest and specific, and make sure your answer matches your application. If you can work evenings or weekends, say so clearly.
4. What does good customer service mean to you?
Publix's mission starts with being "passionately focused on customer value", and its slogan is "where shopping is a pleasure". Give a short definition in your own words, then back it with an example: noticing what a customer needs, helping them find it and making the visit easy.
5. Tell me about a time you gave a customer excellent service.
Pick a story where you did something the customer didn't expect. Say what the situation was, what you did and how the customer reacted. If you have no work experience, use school, volunteering or helping at a family business.
6. How would you handle an upset customer?
Show that you'd listen first, stay calm, apologise, fix what you can and bring in a manager when needed. Customer service is what the application questions measure, so your interview answer should match that standard.
7. Tell me about your work experience.
Publix says managers often look for experience in retail, customer service or food preparation. Lead with whatever is closest to the job you applied for, and explain what you did day to day.
8. What skills would you bring to this role?
Skills are one of the four interview areas. Name two or three that fit the department: accuracy and speed at the register, food safety in the bakery, lifting and organising in stocking. Give a quick example for each.
9. Tell me about a time you solved a problem on your own.
Problem-solving is the other thing Publix's application questions measure. Choose a small, real problem, explain how you worked it out and say what happened.
10. Tell me about a time you avoided waste or saved time.
"Intolerant of waste" is part of Publix's mission statement. A story about reducing waste, reorganising something to save time or catching an error before it cost money fits that directly.
11. Tell me about a time you worked well as part of a team.
Publix's mission talks about the dignity and value of its associates. Show how you treated teammates: helping someone new, sharing the load on a busy day or resolving a disagreement respectfully.
12. Where do you see yourself in a few years?
Publix highlights its promote-from-within culture, so ambition fits well here. If you'd like to grow into a lead or management role, say so. If this is a job alongside school, say what you want to learn.
13. How are you involved in your community?
Being "involved as responsible citizens in our communities" is part of Publix's mission, and Publix tells candidates to research its community involvement. Volunteering, school activities or helping neighbours all count.
14. Do you have any questions for us?
Publix tells candidates to prepare three to five. Ask about training, the department's busiest times and how people move up.
For more practice material, our list of behavioural interview questions has a wider bank, and our situational interview questions cover "what would you do if" prompts.
What happens after the Publix interview?
If you're selected, Publix says you'll go through a background check and onboarding before you start, which adds a few more days. Publix doesn't publish what the background check covers.
- Check your status by logging into your applicant account and looking under your applications.
- Keep your application active. If you haven't heard back, Publix asks you to update your application every 30 days so it stays visible to managers.
- Send a thank-you note. Publix recommends a handwritten one.
How to prepare for a Publix interview
- Apply for roles that match your availability, and keep it as open as you honestly can.
- Answer the application questions slowly. Publix says they measure customer service and problem-solving.
- Introduce yourself at the store after applying, as Publix suggests.
- Read Publix's mission statement and one recent newsroom story, so "Why Publix?" has a specific answer.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customer service, an upset customer, teamwork, solving a problem and avoiding waste.
- Prepare three to five questions for the interviewer.
- Practise out loud with a friend, as Publix recommends. Our mock interview guide shows how to set one up.
- On the day, arrive 15 minutes early in business-professional clothes, with a resume.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and Publix's application questions reward judgement about customers and problems. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Publix and doesn't use Publix's questions or assessments.
