PNC Interview Questions and Hiring Process (2026)

The short answer

PNC sets out four steps: before you apply, applying, screening and interviewing (which may include a phone call and, for some roles, an assessment or pre-recorded video interview), and offer and onboarding (a verbal then written offer, followed by a background check). Prepare STAR stories that show its values, such as customer focus, integrity and teamwork. PNC doesn’t publish a timeline.

  • You can have up to five active PNC applications at a time.
  • PNC doesn’t allow generative AI during interviews or assessments, unless it says otherwise in advance.
  • Virtual interviews are on video with your camera on; PNC never interviews by chat.
  • Internship and development programme applications open each August, and PNC encourages applying by 16 September.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with PNC and doesn’t use PNC’s assessments or questions.

PNC sets out four steps: before you apply, applying, screening and interviewing, and offer and onboarding. Talent Acquisition reviews your application and may call you, some roles add a pre-employment assessment or a pre-recorded video interview, and selected candidates interview with a hiring manager, recruiter or panel before receiving an offer and a background check. PNC doesn't publish how long the process takes.

Everything below comes from PNC's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where PNC doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions further down are ones to prepare for, built from PNC's values and what its careers pages say.

What is the PNC hiring process?

You apply online, are screened by Talent Acquisition, interview, and receive an offer followed by a background check. PNC sets this out on its hiring process page.

Before you apply

PNC suggests learning about the company through its careers site and social channels, and going to a local career fair or hiring event. If nothing fits yet, you can set up a job alert or join its Talent Community.

The application

  • Tailor your resume to the role, highlighting the experience and achievements that match the posting. PNC's candidate AI guidelines say you may use AI to edit or refine a resume or cover letter, not to create it.
  • You can hold up to five active applications at a time.
  • Expect a confirmation email once you've submitted.
  • Check the posting is real. PNC's recruitment scams page says you can verify a job is listed at pnc.jobs before applying.

If you need an accommodation to apply, PNC asks you to email accommodationrequest@pnc.com with "accommodation request" in the subject line, your name, the job ID and how to contact you, or to call 877-968-7762 and say "Workday".

What is the PNC interview process?

After Talent Acquisition reviews your application, PNC may call you for an introductory phone conversation. Some roles then ask for a pre-employment assessment or a pre-recorded virtual interview, which PNC says usually comes before a live interview. If you're selected, you interview in person or by video with a hiring manager, a recruiter or a panel of PNC employees.

PNC's rules for the interview stage:

  • Watch your email for instructions about any assessment or recorded interview.
  • Keep your camera on for remote interviews. PNC's scams page says virtual interviews need a video camera so it can confirm your identity.
  • No generative AI. PNC says AI of any kind isn't permitted during interviews and assessments, and that misrepresenting your experience or undisclosed help that affects evaluation may affect your candidacy.
  • No chat interviews. PNC says it doesn't interview candidates for any role through chat-based formats. A "PNC interview" over text or chat isn't PNC.

For students, PNC's internship and development programme pages describe selection as "thoughtful conversations and behavioral interviews" about your experiences, interests and goals.

Does PNC have an assessment?

For some roles, yes. PNC says certain positions require a pre-employment assessment or a pre-recorded virtual interview, and that you'll get instructions by email. It doesn't name the assessment, say what it contains or how it's scored. PNC's AI guidelines say assessments and take-home exercises should be done without AI unless PNC explicitly says otherwise beforehand.

If you're asked for a pre-recorded interview, you answer questions on camera without a live interviewer. Our one-way video interview guide explains how the format works. If an assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format; our situational judgement test guide covers how that works in general.

PNC's students page also links to free Forage virtual job simulations if you want a feel for the work before applying.

What happens after the PNC interview?

A recruiter contacts you about next steps. If you're selected, PNC makes a verbal offer, then sends a formal offer by email to accept electronically. You'll then get an email from preemployment@pnc.com with a personal link to complete your profile with PNC's background check provider, which sends a link to book a screening at a location near you. Further emails cover your start date and onboarding.

If you don't get an offer, PNC suggests staying connected through its Talent Community, social channels or a job alert. PNC doesn't publish a waiting period before you can apply again.

How long does the PNC hiring process take?

PNC doesn't publish a timeline for its hiring process. For students, applications for internships and development programmes open each August. PNC has no universal deadline, but encourages applying by 16 September, after which openings may become more limited, and some roles may be reposted over the winter.

What does PNC look for?

PNC lists seven corporate values: customer focus, diversity and inclusion, integrity, performance, quality of life, respect and teamwork. Its culture page says the culture is built on respect, authenticity and connection, and names five themes: valuing the whole person, empowering innovation, collaborating, acting with integrity and supporting growth.

Common PNC interview questions

PNC doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the ones to prepare for, based on its values and careers pages. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for questions about past experience; our STAR method guide shows how.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to your recent experience and why it leads to this role. If you're applying to a branch, link it to helping customers; for a corporate role, to the team's work.

2. Why PNC?

Pick something specific from PNC's careers or company pages, such as a value or a programme, and connect it to your own reasons. Avoid generic answers about banking.

3. Tell me about a time you helped a customer reach a goal.

Customer focus is the first value PNC lists, and it talks about meeting customers' financial needs and goals. Choose an example where you found out what someone needed before you offered a solution.

4. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when no one was watching.

PNC's integrity value talks about honesty and the highest ethical standards. Give an honest example, such as reporting a mistake or following a procedure when a shortcut was easier.

5. Describe a time you worked with a team to hit a target.

Teamwork and performance are both PNC values. Say what your part was, how you worked with others and what the result was, with a number if you have one.

6. Tell me about a time you worked with people whose views differed from yours.

PNC lists diversity and inclusion and respect as values. Show that you listened, took the other view seriously and reached a better result together.

7. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way to do something.

PNC's culture page says "Your ideas can make a real impact". Describe a process you improved, how you got others on board and what changed.

8. How do you handle a heavy workload or competing deadlines?

PNC lists performance and quality of life among its values. Show how you prioritise to deliver results without burning out, with a short example.

9. Tell me about something you learned quickly.

PNC talks about supporting growth. Give an example of picking up a new system, product or rule, and how you made sure you'd got it right.

10. Have you used AI tools in your work?

PNC's AI guidelines say it encourages candidates to share their skills using AI in previous roles. If you have, describe a real task and what you checked yourself. Don't use AI during the interview itself.

11. For internships and development programmes: why this programme?

PNC's programme pages talk about real-world projects, mentorship and exposure to its businesses. Name the programme family you applied to and what you want to learn there.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask two: for example, what success looks like in the first months, and how the team works together.

For more practice, see our list of behavioural interview questions.

How to prepare for a PNC interview

  1. Read the job posting closely and match your resume and examples to it.
  2. Learn PNC's values and prepare one STAR story each for customer focus, integrity, teamwork and performance.
  3. Watch your email after applying; assessments and recorded interviews arrive that way.
  4. Set up for video: camera on, good light, a quiet room and a tested connection.
  5. Practise without AI help on the day. PNC says you may use AI to practise questions and research the company, not during the interview.
  6. Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for job seekers. It isn't affiliated with PNC and doesn't use PNC's assessments or questions.
