Petco interview questions focus on animal care, helping pet parents, working as a team and being available when the store needs you. Petco's careers site doesn't lay out a step-by-step hiring process for store roles, so the best preparation is its values and the job posting you're applying for.
Everything below about Petco comes from its own careers site at careers.petco.com and from Petco job postings, linked as we go. Where Petco doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Petco doesn't publish its questions.

What is the Petco hiring process?
You find a role, apply online and, if shortlisted, interview. Petco's careers site groups jobs into four areas: Pet Care Centers (its stores), veterinary services, distribution centres and support centres.
Store roles listed on its store careers page include Store Associate, Animal Care Specialist, Aquatic Specialist, dog training, store leadership and Store General Manager. Grooming has its own path, from Junior Groomer to Groomer and Grooming Salon Manager.
Petco doesn't publish how many interviews store applicants have, who runs them or how long hiring takes.

How do you apply to Petco?
Search jobs on careers.petco.com, open a posting and select Apply. Petco's site has a separate sign-in for returning applicants with an existing account, and current Petco partners apply for internal roles through Workday.
Read the posting carefully, because requirements differ by role. Two postings we checked:
- Animal Care Specialist (Lincoln, Nebraska): at least one year of experience working with or caring for companion animals and aquatic life, strong animal care knowledge, a customer service mindset with an aptitude for selling, and completion of the Petco Animal Care Certification Program. The role involves lifting up to 50 pounds and flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Junior Groomer (Mount Vernon, New York): 0 to 1 year of animal-related experience, including shelter volunteering or pet sitting, a genuine passion for animals, and the ability to handle pets of all sizes and temperaments with care. The posting also asks for availability on weekends, evenings and holidays.
If you're not ready to apply, Petco's Talent Community sends updates on jobs and events that match your background.
What is the Petco interview process?
For store roles, Petco doesn't publish one. Expect the interview to test the things its postings ask for: animal care knowledge, customer service, teamwork and availability. Ask the person who invites you who you'll meet and how long to allow.
For veterinary roles, Petco's veterinary talent advisor writes that you'll usually talk to a talent advisor first, then an area medical director, who is a veterinarian. The same article encourages candidates to bring open-ended questions about culture, team support and growth.
Does Petco have an assessment?
Petco's careers pages don't describe a pre-hire test or online assessment. If a role you apply for includes one, the invitation should tell you what it involves.
Some roles involve certification after you're hired. The Animal Care Specialist posting requires completing the Petco Animal Care Certification Program, and Petco's grooming careers page says every Petco certified pet stylist starts with a paid certification programme.
What happens after the Petco interview?
Petco doesn't publish what happens after an interview or how quickly you'll hear back. If you haven't heard back, a polite follow-up with the store or recruiter is reasonable, and keep an eye on the email address you applied with.
If you're hired as a Junior Groomer, the posting we checked describes training that starts with dog behaviour, pet and personal safety, check-in procedures and customer service, with on-the-job training in bathing and drying, then moves on to bathing and walk-in services under experienced groomers.
How long does Petco take to hire?
Petco doesn't publish a timeline. It depends on the role, the store and how many people apply.
Common Petco interview questions and how to answer them
Petco says its purpose is to improve the lives of pets, pet parents and Petco partners. Its three values are:
- Pet First (Protect & Empower): put the needs of pets and pet parents at the centre of everything.
- Foster the Fun (Connect & Bond): celebrate pet parenthood through experiences, products and services.
- Let's Go! (Own & Commit): one Petco team, where everyone brings their strengths.
Use them to shape your answers, and back each answer with a real example. The STAR method (situation, task, action, result) keeps "tell me about a time" answers focused.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it under a minute: your recent work or study, your experience with animals, and why you applied for this role at Petco.
2. Why do you want to work at Petco?
Link your answer to Petco's purpose. Mention your own pets, animal care experience or volunteering, and what you'd like to learn, such as grooming, aquatics or training.
3. Tell me about your experience caring for animals.
Be specific about species, routines and responsibilities: feeding, cleaning habitats, spotting signs of illness. The Animal Care Specialist posting asks for at least a year of hands-on experience, so give dates.
4. What would you do if an animal in the store looked unwell?
This is Pet First. Say you'd follow the store's animal care procedures, make sure the animal is safe, record it and tell the person responsible straight away. The posting we checked lists hourly animal health checks and incident reports among the duties.
5. How would you help someone choosing supplies for their first pet?
Ask questions first: the type of pet, its age, the home and the budget. Then recommend what fits, and explain the basics of care. Petco's postings describe this kind of education as a core part of the job.
6. Tell me about a time you helped an upset customer.
Describe the problem, how you listened and stayed calm, what you did and how the customer left. The Animal Care Specialist posting says to escalate concerns to the Leader on Duty when appropriate, so say when you would.
7. How would you recommend a product or service without being pushy?
Petco's postings mention a selling model and department sales goals. Show you'd recommend things that genuinely help the pet, such as grooming, training or a better food, and accept a "no" gracefully.
8. Tell me about a time you taught someone something.
Animal Care Specialists educate customers and mentor other partners on care standards. Use an example of training a colleague, teaching a child about pets or explaining a routine, and say how you checked they'd understood.
9. Describe a time you worked as part of a team on a busy shift.
This is Let's Go! Petco's own description of store work calls it fast paced and physical. Show how you helped others and kept on top of your own tasks.
10. How do you feel about cleaning, stocking and lifting?
Be honest. Store and grooming postings include cleaning habitats or the salon, stocking shelves and lifting, up to 50 pounds in the Animal Care Specialist posting. Give an example of physical or repetitive work you've done reliably.
11. How would you keep a nervous dog calm and safe? (Grooming roles)
Talk about reading the dog's body language, moving slowly, keeping a calm voice and stopping if the dog is too stressed. The Junior Groomer posting stresses handling pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
12. What is your availability?
The postings we checked ask for evenings, weekends and holidays. Give your real availability and make sure it matches your application.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training for new partners, how the team splits animal care and sales, or what makes someone successful in the role. Petco's veterinary talent advisor recommends open-ended questions over yes-or-no ones, and the same approach works for store interviews.

- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions for the interviewer.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and handling customers well improves with practice on realistic situations. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Petco and doesn't use Petco's interview questions.
