Mphasis Interview Questions, Hiring Process and Assessment

The short answer

Mphasis says technical roles have two interview rounds with technical experts, sometimes plus a client interview, and every candidate is assessed on cultural fit. Freshers hired from technology schools need an average of at least 60% and go through an aptitude test, a personal interview and a communication test. Mphasis says shortlisted candidates typically take 10 to 15 days to get through.

  • Successful freshers get a Letter of Intent first and a permanent offer letter after joining on the scheduled date.
  • Campus programmes for engineering students may use hackathons and coding tests.
  • Mphasis’s culture page lists principles such as “We experiment without fear of failure” and “Disagree but Commit”.
  • Mphasis says it doesn’t take payment from candidates, and its genuine email comes from the mphasis.com domain.

Mphasis is an IT services company that sets out its hiring steps on its careers site. Its hiring FAQs say technical roles have two interview rounds with technical experts, sometimes with a project-specific client interview, and that every candidate is assessed on cultural fit. Its application process page sets out how it hires freshers.

Everything below comes from Mphasis's own careers and culture pages, linked as we go. Where Mphasis doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Mphasis doesn't publish its questions.

What is the Mphasis hiring process?

For experienced hires, you post your profile on the Mphasis careers portal, go through the interview rounds and get an offer if you're selected. For freshers, Mphasis screens on academic score, runs elimination rounds and issues a Letter of Intent before joining.

Experienced hires

  • Apply through the Mphasis careers site, which lists jobs on its RippleHire portal.
  • Former employees can reapply at any time and should answer "Yes" to the question about having worked at Mphasis before.
  • Location depends on the project or job. Mphasis says any relocation eligibility is stated in the offer letter.

Freshers and campus hiring

Mphasis's application process page says it hires Bachelors and Masters candidates from engineering streams, and Masters candidates from computer applications and business management courses. Applicants are filtered on "a minimum average academic score of 60%" and then go through three elimination rounds:

What is the Mphasis online assessment?

For freshers from technology schools, the first elimination round is an aptitude test, and Mphasis's campus page says "Hackathons / Coding tests / Other Competitive Assessment methodologies are deployed for evaluation" for its Tier-1 and Tier-2 programme. There is also a communication test.

Mphasis doesn't publish what these tests contain, how long they take, which platform they run on or the cut-off. Treat section lists, question counts and cut-offs you read on prep sites as unconfirmed, and check your drive notice for the format.

Our guide to questions in aptitude tests covers numerical, verbal and logical reasoning, and our guide to interview test questions covers coding and skills tests. For any test:

  • Read the instructions twice and note the time allowed.
  • Use a laptop with a reliable connection and a quiet room.
  • Work as you normally would. Mphasis publishes no answer key.

What is the Mphasis interview process?

Mphasis says technical roles have two rounds with technical experts and may include a project-specific interview with the client. Non-technical roles have a similar number of rounds. All candidates are assessed on cultural fit.

  • Technical rounds: expect questions on the language, tools and projects on your CV, and on the fundamentals of your subject.
  • Client interview: if the role is for a specific project, the client may want to meet you. Read up on the client's industry if your recruiter tells you who it is.
  • Cultural fit: Mphasis says all candidates are assessed on cultural fit. Its culture page sets out its principles, which are worth knowing. See the questions below.
  • Dress code: Mphasis says its dress code is semi-formal.

Mphasis doesn't publish how long each round lasts. Ask your recruiter who you'll meet and what each round covers.

How long does the Mphasis hiring process take?

Mphasis says shortlisted candidates typically take 10 to 15 days to get through the process, and that it may vary if a client interview is included. For freshers, the gap between the Letter of Intent and joining depends on when your training batch is scheduled; Mphasis says it contacts you when it is.

What happens after the Mphasis interview?

Experienced hires get an offer letter. Freshers who clear the rounds are issued a Letter of Intent, are contacted when their training batch is scheduled, and receive a permanent offer letter after joining on the scheduled date, subject to joining formalities.

  • Documents: in India, Mphasis says an Aadhaar card is important for joining, and if you don't have one, proof that you've applied for it is mandatory.
  • No probation: Mphasis says it has no probation period, and every new joiner is assigned a Buddy.
  • Beware of fraud. Mphasis's fraud awareness page says "Mphasis does not take payment from candidates for employment purposes". Genuine email comes from mphasis.com; scammers have used lookalike addresses such as @Mphasis.info. Report suspicious approaches to security.investigations@mphasis.com.

Common Mphasis interview questions and how to answer them

These are questions to prepare for. Mphasis's careers site says "Passion, Perseverance, Perfection" are the three words that define it. Its culture page lists five principles: Mphasis first, growth mindset ("We nurture growth and promote owner's mentality"), ready, fire, aim ("We experiment without fear of failure"), work for each other ("We go beyond titles and designations to make things happen") and disagree but commit. Several answers below draw on these.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: your degree or current role, one piece of work you're proud of, and the skills you'd bring. End on why this Mphasis role fits, so the interviewer has an easy next question.

2. Walk me through a project on your CV.

Explain the problem, your part in it, the technology you used and what you'd change. Mphasis's technical rounds are run by technical experts, so expect follow-up questions on any tool you name.

3. Which programming language are you strongest in?

Pick the one you've used most and be ready for its basics: data types, control flow, functions, error handling and how you'd debug a simple fault. Write and explain a short piece of code if asked.

4. Explain a core concept from your subject.

Revise the fundamentals of your specialism, such as object-oriented programming, databases, operating systems or networking for software roles. Explain one idea simply with an example, and say so if you don't know something.

5. Why do you want to join Mphasis?

Be specific. Link your answer to the role and to something Mphasis says about itself, such as its growth mindset principle or its "Hi-Tech" focus on engineering and design. Avoid general praise.

6. Tell me about a time you owned a problem end to end.

Mphasis's growth mindset principle promotes an "owner's mentality". Use STAR: the problem, why you took it on, what you did and the result.

7. Tell me about something you tried that didn't work.

Mphasis's "ready, fire, aim" principle says "We experiment without fear of failure". Describe an experiment, what went wrong, what you learned and what you did next.

8. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate or manager.

"Disagree but Commit" is an Mphasis principle. Show that you raised your view clearly and respectfully, and then committed fully once the decision was made.

9. Describe a time you kept going on a hard problem.

Mphasis's careers site says "Geeks don't give up. Perseverance is their closest ally." Pick a stubborn bug, a tough subject or a long project and show what kept you going.

10. Tell me about a time you helped a colleague outside your own role.

This maps to "work for each other": going beyond titles to make things happen. Keep the focus on what you did and what it changed.

11. How would you explain a technical issue to a client?

Technical roles may include a client interview. Show you can drop jargon, use the client's terms and check they've understood.

12. Are you comfortable with shifts and relocation?

Mphasis says shifts are assigned by project and work location depends on the project or job. Answer honestly and explain any constraint.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the project or client, the training new joiners get, or how the Buddy programme works in the team.

How to prepare for the Mphasis interview

  1. Check your eligibility. For fresher hiring, Mphasis filters on a minimum average academic score of 60%.
  2. Practise aptitude questions under time pressure, and coding problems if your drive includes a coding test or hackathon.
  3. Prepare for the communication test by practising clear spoken answers: read aloud, summarise a paragraph, and introduce yourself without notes.
  4. Revise one language thoroughly and the fundamentals of your subject for the two technical rounds.
  5. Read Mphasis's culture page and prepare a STAR story for each principle. Our STAR method guide and list of behavioural interview questions help, and a mock interview helps you hear how you sound.
  6. Keep your documents ready, including Aadhaar if you're joining in India.
  7. Check every message comes from mphasis.com, and never pay to get a job.

Practising realistic work tasks
