Michaels Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Candidates report that Michaels interviews usually cover your availability, how you help customers, teamwork and why you want to work at a creative retailer. You apply online at careers.michaels.com, and candidates most often report a single one-on-one interview. Michaels doesn’t publish a timeline or an assessment, so answer with its five values in mind, starting with “We put people first”.

  • Michaels says it never interviews over email, never makes unsolicited job offers and never asks candidates for payment.
  • Its five values are: we put people first, we do the right thing, we’re always improving our craft, we hold ourselves accountable, and we’re better together.
  • Michaels’ stated purpose is “to fuel the joy of creativity and celebration”.
  • If you need an accommodation to apply or interview, Michaels asks you to call Customer Care on 1-800-642-4235.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Michaels and doesn’t use its questions.

Candidates report that Michaels interview questions usually cover when you can work, how you look after customers, how you work with a team and why you want to work at a creative retailer. You apply online at careers.michaels.com, and candidates most often describe a single one-on-one interview. Michaels doesn't publish how long the process takes.

This guide uses Michaels' own careers pages for facts, and labels anything that comes from candidate reports. Those reports vary by store and by year, so treat them as a rough guide.

What is the Michaels hiring process?

You apply online for a role, may complete a short assessment, interview, and get an offer if you're selected. Michaels doesn't publish these steps in more detail, so the sections below say where each fact comes from.

Michaels runs arts and crafts stores in the US and Canada, sells online at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca, and also owns Artistree (custom framing) and MakerPlace by Michaels. Its headquarters are in Irving, Texas. Most entry-level openings are store roles; job listings commonly name cashiers, sales associates and seasonal sales associates.

How do you apply to Michaels?

Go to careers.michaels.com, search the open roles and apply online for a role at a specific location. If nothing suits you yet, you can join Michaels' talent community to hear about new openings.

Michaels warns about recruitment scams on its careers site. It says it doesn't conduct interviews over email, doesn't make unsolicited job offers and will never ask you for payment during recruitment. Anyone who does is not representing Michaels.

If you need a reasonable accommodation to apply or interview, Michaels asks you to call Customer Care on 1-800-642-4235 (1-800-MICHAEL). Its Makers Like Me programme, piloted in 2021, supports candidates with disabilities, and its Military Family Promise lets military spouses continue their Michaels careers while supporting their service members.

Does Michaels have an assessment?

Michaels doesn't publish one. Some candidates mention a skills test or a personality questionnaire as part of the application. If you get scenario questions about how you'd handle customers or colleagues, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works, and our psychometric assessment guide covers personality questionnaires. Answer as you actually work; Michaels publishes no answer key.

What is the Michaels interview like?

Michaels doesn't publish an interview format or length. Candidates most often describe a one-on-one interview, focused on availability, customer service, teamwork and interest in crafts. The person who books your interview can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow.

Dress neatly, arrive a few minutes early and bring a copy of your resume, even if you applied online.

How long does the Michaels hiring process take?

Michaels doesn't publish a timeline. Candidate reports vary by store and by time of year. If you haven't heard back after a week or so, a short, polite call to the store is reasonable.

What happens after the Michaels interview?

Michaels doesn't describe the steps after an interview. Some candidates mention a background check or a drug test before starting. If you're offered a role, check that the offer comes from Michaels through its official channels: the company says it never makes unsolicited offers or asks for payment.

What does Michaels look for?

Michaels' stated purpose is "to fuel the joy of creativity and celebration". Its working at Michaels page lists five values:

ValueWhat to show in your answers
We put people firstYou help customers and colleagues before you're asked
We do the right thingYou follow the rules and speak up when something's wrong
We're always improving our craftYou learn products and skills, and want to get better
We hold ourselves accountableYou own mistakes and fix them
We're better togetherYou pitch in and support your team

For leadership roles, Michaels also names five servant leader principles: Be Authentic, Have Integrity, Communicate Effectively, Provide Feedback, and Be Compassionate. Its culture page adds mutual respect and belonging for every Team Member.

Michaels interview questions and how to answer them

These are the questions candidates commonly report, plus the ones that follow from what Michaels says it values. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at Michaels?

Be specific. If you craft, paint, sew, frame or bake, say so and give an example. Linking your answer to Michaels' purpose, fuelling the joy of creativity and celebration, shows you've done your homework.

2. What is your availability?

Be exact and honest. Say clearly whether you can work evenings, weekends and holidays, and make sure your answer matches your application. If you're applying for a seasonal role, say whether you'd like to stay on afterwards.

3. Tell me about your customer service experience.

Describe a time you helped a customer find what they needed or solved a problem for them. If you haven't worked in retail, use volunteering, school projects or any job where you dealt with the public.

4. A customer asks for help with a craft project you know little about. What do you do?

This tests "We put people first" and "We're always improving our craft". Show that you'd listen to what they're making, walk them to the right aisle, ask a colleague who knows the area if you're unsure, and learn the answer for next time.

5. How would you handle an unhappy customer?

Show that you'd stay calm, listen without interrupting, apologise for the trouble and try to put it right. Explain when you'd bring in a manager, for example for a refund outside the normal policy.

6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

This maps to "We're better together". Pick an example where you helped someone finish a task, covered for a colleague or shared the load during a busy period, and say what the result was.

7. Tell me about a mistake you made at work and what you did about it.

This maps to "We hold ourselves accountable". Choose a real but modest mistake, say how you owned it, how you fixed it and what you changed afterwards.

8. What would you do if you saw a colleague breaking store policy?

This maps to "We do the right thing". Say you'd raise it with the colleague if it were minor, and with a manager if it involved safety, money or customers. Avoid answers that sound like you'd ignore it.

9. The line at the register is long and a customer on the floor needs help. What do you do?

Show you can prioritise. Explain that you'd call for backup at the register or flag the customer to a colleague, so neither group waits too long, and that you'd keep customers informed.

10. What crafts or hobbies do you enjoy?

It follows from Michaels' creative purpose, and a good answer shows you'll connect with customers. Talk about what you make or would like to learn. If you don't craft, talk about a hobby you've learned from scratch and how you'd learn the products.

11. How would you describe your leadership style?

For leadership roles. Use Michaels' servant leader principles as a guide: give an example of giving honest feedback, communicating clearly with a team and supporting someone who was struggling.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask two or three: what a typical shift looks like, how training works for new Team Members, or what the store's busiest times are.

For more practice, our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions cover the same themes.

How to prepare for a Michaels interview

  1. Read Michaels' five values and pick one example from your experience for each.
  2. Know your availability for evenings, weekends and holidays before you apply.
  3. Visit a store and note how it's laid out and what customers ask for.
  4. Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, mistakes and learning. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  5. Have a craft or hobby story ready, because it helps you answer "Why Michaels?" with something real.
  6. Ignore any "offer" that asks for money or arrives by email without an interview. Michaels says those aren't from Michaels.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories, and situational questions reward good judgement, which improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Michaels and doesn't use its questions.
