Mastercard Interview Process: Stages and Questions

The short answer

Mastercard says every interview includes a behavioural component and an assessment of your problem-solving skills, with the format depending on the role: technical interviews for engineers, product prompts for product managers and case interviews for consultants. Your recruiter explains the format. Mastercard doesn’t publish a timeline or the number of rounds, and says the process varies by location and role.

  • Mastercard looks for six traits, linked to the Mastercard Way: Create Value, Grow Together, Move Fast.
  • Its standard for virtual interviews is on camera, and it asks you not to use AI to develop answers.
  • Some technical assessments may invite you to use AI; follow the instructions you’re given.
  • Genuine emails come from @mastercard.com, and Mastercard never asks candidates for payment.

Mastercard's interview process always includes a behavioural component and an assessment of your problem-solving skills, according to its interview tips page. The rest depends on the role: engineers get a technical interview, product managers get a product prompt, and consultants get a case interview. Mastercard says its hiring process is a general guideline that varies by location and role, and it doesn't publish a timeline.

Everything below comes from Mastercard's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Mastercard doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Mastercard hiring process?

You apply online, a recruiter guides you through the interview format, you interview with a behavioural and a problem-solving component, and Mastercard may check references before an offer. Mastercard calls its published process "a general guideline" and says your experience may vary depending on your location and the role.

Only apply through careers.mastercard.com. Mastercard's fraud alert says genuine emails end in @mastercard.com, its recruiters never ask for payment, it never asks for banking details during recruitment, and any required background check is paid by Mastercard.

What are Mastercard interviews like?

Mastercard says the format varies by role, but all interviews include a behavioural component and an assessment of your problem-solving skills. If you're unsure of the format, your recruiter is available to guide you.

Its AI guidelines set the ground rules for interviews:

  • Virtual interviews are on camera as standard, unless otherwise required.
  • No AI to develop your answers in phone and video interviews.
  • No recording or transcription without Mastercard's approval.
  • Honesty matters. Misrepresenting your skills or experience, whether by yourself, another person or AI, can lead to disqualification.

Technical interviews

Mastercard says technical interviews assess your core technical skills as an engineer through real-world scenarios, and that the questions may differ from standard classroom algorithms. They're designed to show your thought process and problem-solving. Mastercard links role guides for Data Engineer and Software Quality Engineer interviews.

Product management interviews

You get a product prompt or are asked to critique an existing product. Mastercard says the focus is your ability to prioritise user needs and propose solutions that align with business objectives.

Consulting interviews

Consulting candidates get a case interview, which Mastercard describes as "an interactive problem-solving exercise based on actual client engagements". The interview tips page links practice cases, a sample transcript, an interview guide and a scoring rubric, plus a free Associate Consultant job simulation on The Forage.

Does Mastercard have an online assessment?

Mastercard mentions technical assessments in its AI guidelines and says candidates "may be invited to use AI" as part of them. It doesn't publish which roles get one, what format it takes or which platform it uses. Ask your recruiter.

If you're sent a coding test, our guides to HackerRank tests and the CodeSignal General Coding Assessment explain how those common formats work in general. Mastercard hasn't said it uses either.

What happens after the Mastercard interviews?

Mastercard's published pages say it may verify key qualifications and experience through references, and that any required background check is paid by Mastercard. They don't describe the offer stage. Check your spam or junk folder if you haven't heard back, as Mastercard itself advises.

How long does the Mastercard hiring process take?

Mastercard doesn't publish a timeline. It says its process varies by location and role, so ask your recruiter what to expect for yours.

What does Mastercard look for in candidates?

Mastercard lists six traits it looks for, tied to its guiding principles, the Mastercard Way: Create Value, Grow Together, Move Fast.

Trait Mastercard listsWhat to show in an answer
Naturally curious and always learningSomething you taught yourself, and what you did with it
Builds strong relationships and collaborates with intentionA result that needed other people, and how you brought them in
Adapts quickly when priorities shiftA change of plan, and how you re-planned
Always does the right thing, even when no one is watchingA judgement call where the easy option wasn't the right one
Thinks critically and brings structure to complexityA messy problem you broke down into steps
Has a growth mindsetFeedback or a setback that changed how you work

Mastercard also says you don't need to have every trait perfected, and that interviewing is about more than reciting accomplishments.

What questions does Mastercard ask in interviews?

Mastercard doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below follow from its six traits, the Mastercard Way and its interview tips. They're likely themes, not a leaked list.

1. "Why Mastercard?"

Mastercard's own tips say to be ready for this one. Tie your answer to the team and product in the job description, and to something specific you've read on Mastercard's newsroom or careers site.

2. "Walk me through your resume."

Mastercard tells candidates to know every detail on their resume in depth. Expect follow-up questions on any line, so only include what you can explain.

3. "Tell me about something you taught yourself recently."

This tests curiosity and learning. Explain why you started, how you learned it and where you've used it since.

4. "Describe a time you built a relationship that helped you deliver a result."

This maps to collaborating with intention and Grow Together. Show who you needed, how you earned their help and the outcome.

5. "Tell me about a time priorities changed suddenly."

Mastercard lists adapting quickly as a trait, and Move Fast as a principle. Describe what changed, how you re-planned and what you delivered.

6. "Describe a time you did the right thing when it was harder."

This maps to "You always do the right thing, even when no one is watching." Pick a real example where the honest or compliant option cost you time or effort.

7. "Walk me through how you'd approach a complex problem you haven't seen before."

Every Mastercard interview assesses problem-solving. State your assumptions, break the problem into parts, explain your reasoning out loud and check your answer.

8. "Tell me about a piece of feedback that changed how you work."

This tests a growth mindset. Give the feedback, what you changed and evidence that it worked.

9. "Tell me about a time you created value for a customer or the business."

Create Value is the first principle in the Mastercard Way. Quantify the result where you can, using numbers you can stand behind.

10. For product roles: "Critique a product you use."

Mastercard says product interviews may ask you to critique an existing product. Pick the user, name their need, prioritise one problem and propose a fix that fits the business.

11. For consulting roles: a client case

Use Mastercard's own practice cases and scoring rubric from its interview tips page. Structure the problem, ask for data, do the maths out loud and finish with a recommendation.

12. "What questions do you have for us?"

Mastercard says interviewing is a two-way street and tells you to ask questions. Ask about the team's priorities, how success is measured and how the team works with others.

Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for behavioural questions. Our STAR method guide explains it, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

How to prepare for a Mastercard interview

  1. Ask your recruiter about the format for your role. Mastercard says the format varies and that recruiters will guide you.
  2. Prepare one story per trait, six in total, and link each to Create Value, Grow Together or Move Fast.
  3. Know your resume in depth. Mastercard's tips say so directly.
  4. Practise problem-solving out loud, because every interview assesses it. For technical roles, practise real-world scenarios as well as algorithms.
  5. Use Mastercard's own guides for engineering, product and consulting interviews, linked from its interview tips page.
  6. Set up for an on-camera interview, and answer without AI help, as Mastercard's guidelines require.
  7. Practise in a mock interview. Mastercard says AI mock-interview platforms are acceptable for preparation.

Practising realistic work tasks

Every Mastercard interview assesses problem-solving, which you can practise on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Mastercard and doesn't use Mastercard's questions or assessments.
