Marshalls Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Marshalls doesn’t publish its interview questions, but TJX, its parent company, says store associates serve customers enthusiastically, promote its credit and loyalty programmes and work as team players, so expect questions on those. You apply online at jobs.tjx.com, and TJX says its store managers recruit their own teams. TJX doesn’t publish an assessment for store roles or a hiring timeline, so prepare short stories that show its core values: honesty, integrity, and treating each other with dignity and respect.

  • Marshalls is part of TJX and shares the jobs.tjx.com careers site with TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and the group’s other brands.
  • Store associate roles include full-time and part-time associate, key holder, seasonal employee and merchandise associate.
  • Marshalls stands apart from TJ Maxx with a full line of family footwear and an expanded men’s department.
  • TJX says more than 75% of its current US store managers were promoted from other positions in the company.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Marshalls or TJX and doesn’t use their questions or assessments.

Marshalls doesn't publish its interview questions. TJX, the company that owns Marshalls, says its store associates "interact enthusiastically with our customers while promoting our credit and loyalty programs" and act as "positive team players", so expect questions on customer service, the store card, teamwork and your availability. You apply online at jobs.tjx.com, and TJX says its store managers recruit and train their teams. TJX doesn't publish how long hiring takes or whether store applicants take a test.

Everything below comes from TJX's own careers and company pages, linked as we go. Where TJX doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Marshalls hiring process?

You find a Marshalls store role on the TJX careers site, apply online, interview with the store's management and start training if you're offered the job. TJX doesn't describe the steps in more detail than that.

TJX's retail careers page lists the store roles:

  • Retail associates: full-time and part-time associate, key holder, seasonal employee and merchandise associate.
  • Retail management: general manager, assistant store manager, retail manager, multiunit manager, assistant operations manager and assistant merchandise manager.

TJX also hires for distribution and corporate roles, listed under separate career areas on its site.

How do you apply for a job at Marshalls?

Search for Marshalls roles at jobs.tjx.com and apply online. Marshalls shares the site with TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and the group's other brands, so check that the job title names Marshalls and the store you want.

TJX doesn't say how long postings stay open, so apply while a role is listed.

Read the posting before you apply and note what it asks for. Have an example ready for each point, especially customer service, schedule flexibility and teamwork.

Does Marshalls have an assessment?

TJX doesn't publish an assessment for Marshalls store roles. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire as part of your application, answer as you actually work. TJX publishes no answer key, so guessing what it wants is guesswork.

If a questionnaire shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how it works in general.

What is the Marshalls interview like?

TJX doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and they can vary by store and role. Its retail page says store managers "recruit, mentor, train, develop, and manage" their teams, so expect to meet someone from the store's management.

When you're invited, it's reasonable to ask who you'll meet and how long to allow.

How long does the Marshalls hiring process take?

TJX doesn't publish a timeline. If you're waiting, a short, polite call or visit to the store to ask about your application is reasonable.

What does Marshalls look for in employees?

TJX publishes the same values and traits for all its brands, Marshalls included:

  • Core values: "honesty, integrity, and treating each other with dignity and respect," according to its careers page.
  • What We're Like: an interest in growing a career in retail operations; self-driven yet collaborative; inspired by something different every day, with creativity and a sense of ownership; relevant skillsets; and natural communicators, from its retail page.
  • The business: TJX's mission is "to deliver great value to our customers every day." It says new merchandise arrives in its stores several times a week and that it doesn't hold replenishment stock in back rooms, which makes shopping a treasure hunt.

What makes Marshalls different: TJX says Marshalls has a full line of family footwear and an expanded men's department compared with TJ Maxx, and sells fashion, home, shoes, beauty and accessories. Marshalls joined TJX in 1995, forming Marmaxx with TJ Maxx, and has stores across the US, including Puerto Rico, according to TJX's Marshalls page.

What questions does Marshalls ask in interviews?

TJX doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below follow from what TJX says it wants in store associates and how Marshalls stores work, plus the standard questions most store interviews include. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one relevant strength and why you're applying. Lead with anything customer-facing, even volunteering or school work.

2. Why do you want to work at Marshalls?

Be specific. Mention something you know as a shopper, such as the large shoe department or the changing stock, and link it to TJX's mission of delivering great value every day. If you'd like to grow into a key holder or management role, say so.

3. How would you help a customer looking for a particular size or style?

TJX says it doesn't keep replenishment stock in back rooms, so you can't always fetch another size. Show that you'd check the floor and fitting rooms, suggest similar items and mention that new stock arrives several times a week.

4. Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer.

Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when needed. Finish with how the customer left.

5. How would you feel about offering the store credit card and loyalty programme at the register?

TJX names this in its description of what retail associates do, so expect it. Say you're comfortable mentioning it to every customer in a friendly way, and that you'd accept a "no" politely and move on.

6. What is your availability?

Be honest and exact, and make sure it matches your application. Say clearly if you can work evenings, weekends or extra shifts in busy seasons, and whether you're applying for full-time, part-time or seasonal work.

7. How would you keep the shoe or men's department tidy on a busy day?

These are the departments TJX says set Marshalls apart, and they get busy. Talk about pairing and returning shoes to the right place, folding and resizing as you go, and checking with teammates which areas need help first.

8. Tell me about a time something changed at the last minute. What did you do?

TJX describes its associates as "inspired by the prospect of something different every day." With new merchandise arriving several times a week, plans shift. Give an example where you adjusted quickly without dropping the basics.

9. Tell me about a time you worked well as part of a team.

TJX wants people who are "self-driven yet collaborative" and calls its associates "positive team players". Pick an example where you got on with your own tasks and also helped someone else finish theirs.

10. What would you do if you thought a customer was shoplifting?

Say you would follow the store's procedure and tell a manager or the loss prevention team. Confronting the person yourself puts you and others at risk.

11. Tell me about a time you had to be honest about a mistake.

Honesty and integrity are the first of TJX's stated values. Choose a real, small mistake, say how you owned it and what you changed afterwards.

12. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?

TJX says it wants people who join "not just to find a job, but to build a career," and lists an interest in growing a career in retail operations among the traits it looks for. It's fine to say you'd like to take on more responsibility, such as becoming a key holder.

For more practice, our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you a wider bank to rehearse.

What happens after you're hired at Marshalls?

TJX says it aims to "attract talented individuals, teach them our off-price model" and support their careers. On its workplace page, TJX says more than 75% of its current US store managers were promoted into the role from other positions in the company.

How to prepare for a Marshalls interview

  1. Read the posting for your store and have an example for each requirement.
  2. Know TJX's values: honesty, integrity, and treating each other with dignity and respect. Have one story that shows each.
  3. Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, change and reliability.
  4. Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
  5. Visit a Marshalls if you can, and look at the shoe and men's departments, so you can talk about the store as a shopper.
  6. Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how associates move up.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The first weeks on the job reward judgement with customers and tasks, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Marshalls or TJX and doesn't use their questions or assessments.
