Liberty Mutual's hiring process has five steps: an online application, a pre-hire assessment for some roles, a screening interview, interviews with the hiring manager or recruiter, and an offer. Liberty Mutual says the assessment, where there is one, may take between 30 and 60 minutes, and that interview format and length depend on the business unit.
Everything below comes from Liberty Mutual's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Liberty Mutual doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Liberty Mutual hiring process?
You apply online, complete an assessment if the role has one, have a screening interview, meet the hiring manager and get an offer subject to a background check. The steps come from Liberty Mutual's hiring process page.
The application
- Search by career area. Liberty Mutual's careers site groups roles into areas such as claims, customer service, digital and technology, sales, and programmes for graduates and undergraduates.
- Expect a confirmation email, not regular updates. Liberty Mutual says it doesn't contact every candidate with status updates because of the volume of applications. Recruiters contact the people whose background fits what the team needs.
- Join the Talent Community on the careers site if you want to hear about future openings.

Does Liberty Mutual have an assessment?
Some roles do. Liberty Mutual says you may be asked to complete a pre-hire assessment, depending on the role, and that it may take between 30 and 60 minutes.
Liberty Mutual doesn't publish what the assessment contains, how it's scored or whether you can retake it. Treat specific formats and question counts you read on prep sites as unconfirmed.
What it does offer is practice. Its interview resources page links to free skills-based assessments and interview tips from Cappfinity, an assessment company it has partnered with. Use them before you sit the real thing. If your assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.
A few practical points apply to any pre-hire assessment:
- Block out an hour somewhere quiet, since Liberty Mutual's own estimate runs up to 60 minutes.
- Answer as you actually work. There's no published answer key.
- Read every option before you choose, especially when two answers look alike.
What is the Liberty Mutual interview process?
Liberty Mutual says interviews vary in format and length depending on the business unit. The usual pattern on its hiring process page is a first call or video chat, which it calls a screening interview, followed by interviews with the hiring manager, the recruiter or both together.
The screening interview
This is your first conversation with Liberty Mutual. Be ready to walk through your background, say why you applied for this role and confirm practical details such as location and working arrangements.
Hiring manager interviews
These go deeper into the role. Liberty Mutual's interview tips tell you to connect your previous experience to the job, highlight strengths that match the position and have "stats or figures that communicate your impact" ready: team sizes, budgets, time saved or revenue.
Technical interviews
For technical roles, Liberty Mutual says the interview uses a coding platform that evaluates your "coding skills, problem-solving abilities and approach to collaboration." It provides prep resources for this on the same interview resources page. It doesn't name the platform publicly, so check your invitation for details. Talk through your approach as you code, since collaboration is part of what's assessed.
How long does the Liberty Mutual hiring process take?
Liberty Mutual doesn't publish a timeline. It says only that the assessment takes 30 to 60 minutes and that interview formats vary by business unit. If you haven't heard back, remember that Liberty Mutual doesn't send updates to every applicant; the confirmation email is the only guaranteed contact.
What does Liberty Mutual look for?
Liberty Mutual's purpose is to "help people embrace today and confidently pursue tomorrow." Its identity and values page lists five values:
| Value | What Liberty Mutual says it means |
|---|---|
| Act with integrity | Do what's right and follow through |
| Be open | Engage with all people and possibilities |
| Keep it simple | Be clear and transparent |
| Make things better | Be proactive and challenge the status quo |
| Put people first | Act with empathy, dignity and respect |
Role pages add detail. For claims, Liberty Mutual asks for people who are warm and empathetic, communicate clearly with "integrity and honesty", manage their own time and are comfortable in a "digital-first environment". Its entry-level page describes sales teams as "customer-focused, entrepreneurial and performance-driven" and underwriting as needing analytical rigour, relationship management and sound judgement.
Common Liberty Mutual interview questions and how to answer them
Liberty Mutual doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the topics its values and role pages point to. Answer the "tell me about a time" questions in STAR form (situation, task, action, result); our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Liberty Mutual?
Connect its purpose, helping people feel secure enough to pursue tomorrow, to something you care about. Then name what draws you to this team: a claims role that helps people at a hard moment, or a technology role shaping how insurance works.
2. Tell me about yourself and how your experience fits this role.
Liberty Mutual's own tip is to "create your story": link your past experience to this job. Keep it to two minutes and finish on why this role is the next step.
3. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was difficult.
This maps to "act with integrity". Pick an example where you followed through on a commitment or raised a problem, and say what it cost you and what happened.
4. Tell me about a time you helped someone who was upset or stressed.
"Put people first" and the claims page's focus on empathy both point here. Show that you listened, kept calm, explained what would happen next and followed up.
5. Describe a time you improved a process or challenged how something was done.
This is "make things better". Describe the problem, what you changed and the result, with a number if you have one, as Liberty Mutual's tips suggest.
6. Tell me about a time you explained something complicated simply.
"Keep it simple" means being clear and transparent. Insurance is full of jargon, so an example of explaining a policy, a process or technical work to a non-specialist fits well.
7. Tell me about a time you worked with people who saw things differently.
"Be open" means engaging with all people and possibilities. Show how you listened to another view, found common ground and what the team achieved.
8. How do you manage your time when priorities keep changing?
The claims page asks for people who "continually reprioritize tasks". Describe how you triage, how you track deadlines and how you tell people when something will slip.
9. Tell me about a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information.
Liberty Mutual says underwriting calls for analytical rigour and sound judgement. Explain what you knew, what you assumed, how you limited the risk and what you learned.
10. What would you do if a customer was unhappy with a decision you couldn't change? (claims and customer service)
Explain the decision honestly, show empathy, tell them what options they do have and escalate when that's the right route.
11. Tell me about a time you hit or missed a target. (sales roles)
Sales teams are described as performance-driven. Give the target, what you did, the result and, if you missed, what you changed afterwards.
12. Walk me through how you'd solve this problem. (technical roles)
In the coding interview, say your plan before you write code, check edge cases and invite questions. Liberty Mutual says it assesses your approach to collaboration as well as the code.
13. What questions do you have for us?
Liberty Mutual tells candidates to prepare "insightful questions". Ask about the team's priorities this year, how success is measured in the first six months, and the training on offer.
How to prepare for Liberty Mutual's hiring process
These steps follow Liberty Mutual's own interview tips:
- Research Liberty Mutual on its careers site and social channels, and read its five values.
- Use the free Cappfinity prep tools linked from the interview resources page before any assessment.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories that cover integrity, empathy, improvement, clear communication, teamwork and changing priorities. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Note the numbers that show your impact: team sizes, budgets, time saved, revenue.
- Test your technology before a phone or video interview.
- Practise out loud in a mock interview with a friend who will give honest feedback, as Liberty Mutual suggests.
- Give yourself 10 to 15 minutes before the interview to review your notes and the job description, which is also Liberty Mutual's advice.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Liberty Mutual and doesn't use Liberty Mutual's assessments or questions.
