Kroger's published values suggest store interviews look for people who are friendly with customers, dependable, safe and honest, and who can work the shifts the store needs. You apply online through Kroger's careers site, and Kroger doesn't publish the steps after that.
This guide sticks to what Kroger publishes on its own corporate and careers sites. Where Kroger doesn't say something, we say so instead of guessing.

What is the Kroger hiring process?
You find a role on Kroger's careers site, apply online, and the store or team contacts you if they want to interview you. Kroger doesn't publish a fuller description than that on any page we could read, so treat specific steps, test names and timelines you see elsewhere as unconfirmed.
Kroger's careers site groups jobs into eight areas:
- Grocery Retail
- Kroger Delivery
- Supply Chain & Distribution
- Manufacturing
- Kroger Health & Wellness
- Technology & Digital
- Corporate
- Internships
This guide focuses on Grocery Retail, the store roles.

How do you apply for a job at Kroger?
Go to krogerfamilycareers.com, the careers site that Kroger's corporate website links to, search by role or location, and apply online. The old address jobs.kroger.com redirects there.
Kroger also operates stores under other names, which its corporate site lists as its family of banners: Ralphs, Smith's, Fry's, Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, King Soopers, QFC, Dillons, Mariano's, Pick 'n Save, Metro Market and Baker's. If the store near you carries one of those names, search for that store's location on the careers site, and check the banner's own website if you can't find it.
Read the job description before you apply and make sure the shifts suit you.
Does Kroger have an assessment test?
Kroger doesn't publish one. Its careers pages we could read don't mention a pre-hire test for store roles, and it doesn't say what one would contain or how it would be scored. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire or assessment as part of your application, answer as you actually work.
If it shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that works in general.
What is the Kroger interview like?
Kroger doesn't publish an interview format, length or who you'll meet, and it may differ by store, role and banner. The person who schedules you can tell you; it's a reasonable thing to ask.
What Kroger does publish is what it values in associates. Its values page says it values and rewards associates who are "friendly, dedicated and deliver measurable contributions to our business", and its six values give you a checklist for your examples:
| Value | How Kroger defines it |
|---|---|
| Honesty | "We insist on truthfulness with each other, with our customers, with our vendors and in our business records." |
| Integrity | "We act in accordance with our values, even when it's difficult." |
| Respect | "We treat all with dignity and value the opinions and perspectives of others." |
| Diversity | "We seek and embrace differences in the backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities of all associates, customers and vendors." |
| Safety | "We protect our customers and each other from injury with a safe and secure workplace and shopping environment." |
| Inclusion | "We encourage and expect collaboration, teamwork and the active involvement of all associates." |
How long does the Kroger hiring process take?
Kroger doesn't publish a timeline. If you've applied and heard nothing after about a week, a short, polite call to the store is reasonable. The careers site also lets you sign in to your candidate profile.
What happens after you get an offer from Kroger?
Kroger doesn't publish what happens between an offer and your first shift, such as checks or onboarding. It does say it ensures "all associates have opportunities to learn and grow", and that it offers "accessible employment" with routes to "grow and build a rewarding career". Ask your hiring manager what your first weeks will involve.
Kroger interview questions and how to answer them
Kroger doesn't publish its interview questions. These follow from its six values, its stated purpose and the career areas it hires for. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one strength that matters in a store, and why you're applying. Lead with anything customer-facing, even if it was volunteering or school.
2. Why do you want to work at Kroger?
Be specific. Kroger's purpose is "To Feed the Human Spirit" and its promise is "Fresh for Everyone". Say what you like about the store as a shopper, the department you'd like to work in, and why.
3. What is your availability?
Be honest and exact, and make sure it matches your application. Grocery stores trade early, late and at weekends, so say clearly which of those you can cover.
4. Tell me about a time you went out of your way for a customer.
Kroger says it values associates who are "friendly". Choose an example where you noticed someone needed help, helped them properly and checked they had what they needed.
5. A customer can't find an item and you're busy stocking. What do you do?
This tests whether you put customers first. Say you'd stop, take them to the item or find out where it is, and go back to your task afterwards.
6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work. What did you do?
Honesty is Kroger's first value: "We insist on truthfulness with each other". Pick a real, small mistake, say you owned up quickly, fixed it and changed something so it didn't happen again.
7. What would you do if you were asked to do something you thought was against the rules?
Kroger defines integrity as acting on its values "even when it's difficult". Say you'd politely raise your concern, check the correct procedure and go to a manager if needed, instead of going along with it.
8. You see a spill in an aisle. What do you do?
Safety is one of Kroger's six values, about protecting "customers and each other from injury". Say you'd stay with or block off the spill, warn customers, get it cleaned or call for help, and follow the store's procedure.
9. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a co-worker.
This tests respect: Kroger says it treats "all with dignity" and values others' perspectives. Show that you raised it calmly and privately, listened to their side and agreed a way forward.
10. Tell me about a time you worked well as part of a team.
Kroger's inclusion value expects "collaboration, teamwork and the active involvement of all associates". Pick an example where you helped someone else, shared the work fairly or included a quieter teammate.
11. How would you keep your section fresh and well stocked?
"Fresh for Everyone" is Kroger's promise. For produce, deli, bakery or stocking roles, talk about rotating stock so older items sell first, checking dates, removing damaged product and keeping shelves faced and full.
12. Tell me about a goal you set and reached.
Kroger rewards associates who "deliver measurable contributions". Choose a result you can describe in numbers or clear outcomes, such as fewer errors, a task finished early or a target met, and explain the steps you took.
13. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?
Kroger says it wants all associates to "learn and grow". It's fine to say you'd like to learn more departments, take on a lead role or move towards management.
For more practice, our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you a wider bank to rehearse.
How to prepare for a Kroger interview
- Pick the right role. Read the description on the careers site and apply for work that fits your availability.
- Know the six values. Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Diversity, Safety and Inclusion. Have a short story that fits each of the first five; inclusion often comes out of your teamwork story.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, mistakes you fixed, safety and busy periods.
- Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
- Visit the store if you can, especially the department you're applying to, so you can talk about it as a shopper.
- Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how people move between departments.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The first weeks on the job reward judgement with customers and tasks, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Kroger and doesn't use Kroger's questions or assessments.
