What is the HomeGoods hiring process?

You apply online for a role at a particular store, interview if you're selected, and start training if you're offered the job. TJX doesn't describe the steps in more detail on its careers site.

HomeGoods is one of TJX's brands, alongside T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Sierra, Winners, Homesense and TK Maxx. TJX's retail careers page lists the store roles it hires for across its brands:

Retail managementGeneral manager, assistant store manager, retail manager, multiunit manager, assistant operations manager, assistant merchandise manager

TJX says associates "bring our business to life by delivering fantastic shopping experiences": they help customers, promote the store's credit and loyalty programmes, and support the store's goals. Managers plan how to grow store sales and recruit, train and develop the team.

How do you apply to HomeGoods?

Go to the TJX job search, search for HomeGoods and your location, and apply for an open role at the store you want. HomeGoods' own website sends job seekers to TJX's careers pages.

If no role suits you yet, you can join TJX's talent community for alerts about matching jobs. TJX says it provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act and state and local law.

Does HomeGoods have an assessment?

TJX doesn't publish one for HomeGoods store roles. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with workplace scenarios, answer as you actually work. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based questions work in general.

What is the HomeGoods interview like?

TJX doesn't publish an interview format, so expect it to vary by store and by role. Whoever invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow; it's a reasonable thing to ask.

What you can prepare for is what TJX says it looks for in retail. Its retail careers page lists five traits:

  • "Interest in growing a career in retail operations"
  • "Self-driven yet collaborative"
  • "Creativity and sense of ownership"
  • "Relevant skillsets"
  • "Natural communicators"

TJX describes a "people-first culture based on trust, collaboration, and community". Expect questions that test those traits, plus how you'd keep up with a store that changes every week.

How long does the HomeGoods hiring process take?

TJX doesn't publish a timeline. If you've interviewed, haven't heard back and want an update, a short, polite call to the store is reasonable.

What happens after you're hired at HomeGoods?

You start training. TJX says it has a responsibility to "train and mentor our Associates for long-term success". It doesn't publish what store training involves or how long it lasts.

TJX also describes an "open-door philosophy" that gives associates a voice, and markets career paths with room to grow.

What does HomeGoods look for?

HomeGoods sells home fashions from around the world at good prices, and its selection changes all the time. TJX sums it up as "At HomeGoods, you don't go shopping, you go finding." HomeGoods' How We Do It page explains why: deliveries arrive several times a week, store managers often don't know what's coming until the trucks arrive, and the changing mix makes a "treasure hunt" for shoppers.

TJX's mission is to "deliver great value to our customers every day", and its core values are "honesty, integrity, and treating each other with dignity and respect". For a store role, that comes down to friendly, clear communication with customers, keeping up with constant change, working well with the team and taking ownership of your area.

HomeGoods interview questions and how to answer them

These are the questions that follow from what TJX and HomeGoods say they look for, plus the standard questions most retail interviews include. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at HomeGoods?

Be specific. Talk about enjoying home décor, the "treasure hunt" feel of the store, or helping people find something they love at a good price. Mentioning the career paths TJX describes shows you're thinking beyond the first shift.

2. What is your availability?

Be exact and honest. Say clearly which days and shifts you can work, including evenings, weekends and holidays, and whether you want part-time, full-time or seasonal hours.

3. A customer asks for something you don't stock any more. How would you help?

HomeGoods' stock changes all the time, so this comes up. Explain that new items arrive often, help them look for something similar now, and point out what the store does have. HomeGoods' line for shoppers is "If you love it, grab it!"

4. New merchandise has just arrived and the store is busy. How do you get it out?

Useful for Merchandise Associate roles. HomeGoods says deliveries arrive several times a week, often without managers knowing in advance what's on the truck. Describe how you'd sort items quickly, get them onto the floor in the right department, and still break off to help customers.

5. How would you tell a customer about the store's credit card or loyalty programme?

TJX says associates promote its credit and loyalty programmes. Show you'd mention it naturally at the right moment, explain it clearly and accept a "no" politely.

6. Tell me about a time you worked well on a team.

TJX wants people who are "self-driven yet collaborative". Choose an example where you got your own work done and also helped the team reach a shared goal.

7. Tell me about a time you took ownership of something without being asked.

"Creativity and sense of ownership" is one of TJX's five traits. Describe something you noticed, fixed or improved on your own initiative, such as a messy section or a process that kept failing.

8. How would you make a section of the store look good for customers?

Creativity matters in a home store. Talk about grouping items by colour or room, keeping shelves full and tidy, and resetting a display after a busy hour.

9. Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer.

TJX names treating each other with dignity and respect as a core value. Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when needed.

10. What would you do if you saw a co-worker breaking a store rule?

TJX names honesty and integrity as core values. Say you'd raise it calmly, with the person or a manager depending on how serious it was, and that you follow the rules yourself.

11. Where would you like to be in a few years?

TJX looks for an "interest in growing a career in retail operations". If you'd like to move up, say so, and mention a step such as key holder or assistant store manager.

12. How would you train a new associate?

For key holder and manager roles. TJX says its managers recruit, mentor, train and develop their teams. Describe how you'd show the basics, check in during their first shifts and give feedback kindly and often.

How to prepare for a HomeGoods interview

  1. Choose the right role for your experience and availability: associate, merchandise associate, key holder or management.
  2. Learn TJX's five traits and have one story each for teamwork, ownership and communicating with customers.
  3. Understand off-price retail: new stock several times a week, everyday prices with few sales or coupons, and a "treasure hunt" for shoppers.
  4. Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
  5. Visit a HomeGoods store and notice how the team keeps the floor stocked and helps customers.
  6. Prepare four or five STAR stories and rehearse them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, scheduling and how associates progress.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with customers on a busy floor, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks.
