Hobby Lobby doesn't publish its interview questions, but its retail associate postings say you must be available to work some nights and weekends and be "mature and self motivated", and that craft or hobby experience is preferred but not necessary. Expect questions on your availability, how you help customers, how you keep a department in order and how you work without close supervision. Hobby Lobby doesn't publish its interview format, an assessment or how long hiring takes.
The facts below come from Hobby Lobby's own website, its newsroom and the wording of its store job postings, linked as we go. Hobby Lobby's careers site blocked our direct requests, so where we rely on how it appears in search listings, we say so. Where Hobby Lobby doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Hobby Lobby hiring process?
You find a store role, apply, interview with the store, and start work if you're offered the job. Hobby Lobby doesn't describe the steps in more detail than that.
Its newsroom points job seekers to the careers site's retail hourly page. In search listings of that page, Hobby Lobby says it shows some of its available hourly openings, including retail associates, and asks applicants to contact their local store about other hourly positions. The careers site also has separate sections for store management, distribution, ecommerce, manufacturing, and buying and support roles.
Some Hobby Lobby postings have said hourly applications are taken in person at the store, while others link to an online application. Read the posting for your store, and if in doubt, ask at the store how it wants you to apply.
Hobby Lobby also hires seasonal store staff for Christmas; it announced a large seasonal hiring drive in a 2021 newsroom release.

What do Hobby Lobby job postings ask for?
Hobby Lobby's retail associate postings, as carried on job boards we checked on 27 October 2026, ask that applicants:
- be available to work some nights and weekends;
- be mature and self-motivated;
- ideally have experience in the craft or hobby field, though it's "preferred, but not necessary".
The postings also give store hours as Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 8 pm, closed on Sunday. Hobby Lobby's own story page confirms that all its stores are closed on Sunday.
Does Hobby Lobby have an assessment?
Hobby Lobby doesn't publish an assessment for store roles, and the postings we read didn't mention one. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with your application, answer as you actually work. There's no published answer key, so guessing what Hobby Lobby wants is guesswork.
If a questionnaire shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that works in general.
What is the Hobby Lobby interview process like?
Hobby Lobby doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and they may vary by store and role. When you're invited, it's reasonable to ask who you'll meet and how long to allow.
Dress neatly and arrive a few minutes early. Bring your availability written down, since the postings make it a requirement.
How long does the Hobby Lobby hiring process take?
Hobby Lobby doesn't publish a timeline. If you haven't heard back, a short, polite call or visit to the store to ask about your application is reasonable. Avoid the busiest times of day.
What does Hobby Lobby look for in employees?
Hobby Lobby doesn't publish a list of hiring traits beyond its postings. What it does say:
- Its statement of purpose is "Honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles." Its story page says its policies aim to "build character, strengthen individuals, and nurture families."
- Time away from work: its stores close on Sundays and at 8 p.m. the rest of the week. In an October 2026 newsroom release, founder and CEO David Green says this helps employees balance work and home, with time for rest, family and worship.
- Care for staff: the same release quotes Green: "A pillar of our success is taking care of our employees."
- Its roots: David and Barbara Green started the business in 1970 making miniature picture frames at home, and opened the first store in Oklahoma City two years later.
The postings add the practical traits: maturity, self-motivation and availability for some nights and weekends.
What questions does Hobby Lobby ask in interviews?
Hobby Lobby doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below follow from what its postings ask for and what it says about itself, plus the standard questions most store interviews include. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one strength that fits retail, and why you're applying. If you have any craft, sewing, framing or hobby experience, mention it here.
2. Why do you want to work at Hobby Lobby?
Be specific. You might mention that you shop there, a department you know well, or that the closed Sundays and 8 p.m. closing suit your life. Keep the focus on the work and the store.
3. What is your availability?
The postings require availability for some nights and weekends. Be honest and exact, and say clearly which evenings and Saturdays you can work. Sundays don't come up, because the stores are closed.
4. Do you have any craft or hobby experience?
Hobby Lobby says it's preferred but not necessary. If you have some, give a short example of what you make or use. If you don't, say you're keen to learn the products and how you'd go about it, such as asking colleagues and reading labels.
5. How would you help a customer who is looking for supplies for a project?
Show that you'd ask what the project is, walk them to the right aisle, and suggest what else they might need. If you didn't know the answer, you'd find a colleague who does.
6. Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer.
Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when needed. Keep the customer at the centre of the story.
7. Tell me about a time you worked without someone telling you what to do.
The postings ask for people who are "self motivated". Pick an example where you saw what needed doing, such as restocking or tidying, and did it without being asked.
8. How would you keep your department neat and stocked during a busy day?
Talk about tidying as you go, refilling gaps from the stockroom, putting misplaced items back, and checking with your team which areas need help first.
9. How would you handle a long queue at the register?
Show that you'd keep calm, work accurately, greet each customer and call for backup if the store's process allows it. Accuracy with money matters more than speed.
10. Tell me about a time you showed you were reliable.
The postings ask for maturity. Choose an example of turning up on time, covering a shift or finishing something you'd promised, and say what it meant to the people relying on you.
11. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Pick an example where you did your own part well and also helped a teammate, especially during a busy period like a holiday season.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask two or three: what training new associates get, which departments you might work in, and how the store handles the busy seasons.
For more practice, our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you a wider bank to rehearse.
How to prepare for a Hobby Lobby interview
- Read the posting for your store and have an example for each requirement.
- Fix your availability before the interview and write it down.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, working on your own and reliability.
- Visit the store if you can, and note how departments are laid out, so you can talk about it as a shopper.
- Read Hobby Lobby's story page so you know how the business began and what it says about itself.
- Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and departments.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The first weeks on the job reward judgement with customers and tasks, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Hobby Lobby and doesn't use its questions or assessments.
