H-E-B doesn't publish its interview questions. It does publish how it interviews: for many roles you record a HireVue video interview, which H-E-B says typically has 7 situational and behavioural questions with up to 3 minutes for each answer. Below is the process step by step, then the questions to prepare and how to answer each one for H-E-B.
Everything about the process comes from H-E-B's own careers pages and the guides it links from them. Where H-E-B doesn't say something, we say so.
The H-E-B hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What H-E-B says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Find a role and apply at careers.heb.com. You get an email confirming H-E-B received it. | Not published |
| 2. Screening and initial interviews | For some roles, an email invites you to a HireVue video interview, reviewed by the recruiting team. Otherwise a recruiter reviews your application and runs the first interview. | "Some positions take longer than others", depending on the volume of candidates |
| 3. Final interviews and assessments | Depending on the role: more interviews, which can include skills assessments, case studies, panel interviews or in-person interviews. | Not published |
| 4. Offer and onboarding | Once you accept an offer, onboarding begins. | Not published |
What is the H-E-B hiring process?
H-E-B's candidate toolkit lists four steps: job posting and application, screening and initial interviews, final interviews and assessments, and offer and onboarding. The steps after the first depend on the role.
H-E-B doesn't publish how long the whole process takes. Its store FAQ says some positions take longer than others depending on how many people apply, and asks you to keep checking your email and your careers account for updates.
The application
- Apply at careers.heb.com. The same site covers H-E-B stores, manufacturing, supply chain, corporate, digital and healthcare roles. Current employees apply through the internal site.
- Read the job description first. H-E-B's store FAQ says the experience needed varies by role, so check the posting fits your background.
- Watch for the confirmation email. If you're picked for interviews, an H-E-B recruiter emails or calls you.
- Check your status by logging in to your account on careers.heb.com.
- Minimum age for store jobs is 16 for Curbies, Shoppers, Baggers (Customer Service Assistants) and Checkers, and 18 for every other store position.
H-E-B's careers site warns about fake recruiters. All its recruiters contact you from an H-E-B email address. H-E-B says its recruiters never ask for personal information by email, text or phone, and that it never asks applicants for payment. Anyone else is a fraudulent job poster.

What is the H-E-B interview process?
For roles that use it, the process starts with a recorded video interview, then a phone interview with a recruiter, then final interviews for the role. H-E-B's toolkit says:
- Screening. Some roles send a HireVue invitation by email; check your junk folder if it doesn't arrive. Each HireVue is reviewed by the recruiting team.
- No HireVue for your role? A recruiter reviews your application and holds the first interview if you're selected.
- After the HireVue, H-E-B says a recruiter will contact you for a phone interview if you move forward.
- Final interviews depend on the role and can include skills assessments, case studies, panel interviews or in-person interviews.
The HireVue video interview
H-E-B's FAQ says the HireVue video is mandatory for full- and part-time positions, and that you can't swap it for a phone or in-person interview. From its HireVue Tips & Tricks guide:
- About 7 questions. A typical H-E-B HireVue has 7 situational and behavioural questions.
- Up to 3 minutes per answer.
- Re-recording. The tips guide says you get two chances at each question. H-E-B's interview accommodations note says up to three. Follow what your interview screen tells you.
- A practice question comes first. H-E-B encourages you to use it.
- Find a quiet, well-lit space so your recording works and you can be heard.
- Perfect wording isn't the aim. H-E-B says it isn't looking for the most perfectly articulated answer, and is "truly listening for how your past experiences qualify you for the position".
Other points from the toolkit FAQ:
- One interview per application. Each position needs different skills, so H-E-B asks for an interview for every application. If you completed one with identical questions in the past 30 days, you won't have to repeat it, but you still need to click the interview link, or your application stays incomplete.
- Language. Questions appear in English and Spanish, and you can answer in your native language or ASL.
- Technical problems. Use a private Wi-Fi network, update your browser and clear your cache. H-E-B links a network test and HireVue's support pages.
H-E-B's accommodations note adds that you can turn off the self-view camera if seeing yourself is distracting, and that you can complete the interview with a support person or job coach, as long as the answers reflect your own experience. For other accommodations, email InterviewAccommodations@heb.com.
Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how this format works in general.
Does H-E-B have an assessment?
For some roles, yes. H-E-B says final interviews can include skills assessments or case studies, depending on the role. It doesn't publish what the assessments contain, how long they take or how they're scored, so ask your recruiter what to expect when you're invited.
What happens after the H-E-B interview?
H-E-B's toolkit says onboarding begins once an offer is extended and accepted. It doesn't describe the checks in between.
A 2022 KPRC report on an H-E-B career fair described what happened after a successful store interview at that event: an offer from the store, a background check, and, if you passed pre-employment screening, a place at new hire orientation. That describes one event in 2022, so check the current steps with your recruiter.
H-E-B interview questions and how to answer them
H-E-B doesn't publish its questions. It says its HireVue uses situational questions (what would you do) and behavioural ones (tell me about a time), and its interview tips ask you to practise both. The questions below are the kind to prepare. Each answer note ties back to something H-E-B publishes: its core belief that "Each and Every Person Counts", and its six values, Service, Heart, Drive, Innovation, Commitment and Community, from its career information pamphlet.
For behavioural questions, use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result). Our STAR method guide walks through it. With up to 3 minutes per HireVue answer, one well-told story per question is enough.
1. Why do you want to work at H-E-B?
An H-E-B store recruiter told KPRC in 2022 to understand why you think H-E-B, Central Market or Mi Tienda would be a good fit for you. Name the brand and store you applied to, and something specific you value about it as a shopper or neighbour.
2. Tell me about your work history and how it prepares you for this role.
H-E-B's interview tips say to prepare to speak to how your experience is relevant to the role. Pick two things from the job description and give one example for each. Class projects count if you're new to work.
3. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
H-E-B's Service value pledges to "always go above and beyond" and to "think like the customer, not about the customer". Describe what the customer needed, what you did beyond the basics, and how it turned out.
4. A customer can't find an item while you're busy stocking a shelf. What do you do?
This is a situational question, and H-E-B's Service value points to the answer: stop, help them or walk them to the product, then return to your task. Say how you'd make sure the stocking still gets done.
5. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate who was struggling.
H-E-B's Drive value says "collaboration defines us". Show that you noticed, offered help without being asked and still finished your own work.
6. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when no one was watching.
The Commitment value says you never need permission to do the right thing. A small, honest example works: owning a mistake, reporting a safety issue or handing in something found.
7. Tell me about a time you suggested a better way to do something.
H-E-B's Innovation value calls the company "relentlessly dissatisfied with the present". Describe the problem, your idea, who you convinced and what changed.
8. Tell me about a time you treated a customer or co-worker with care during a hard moment.
The Heart value says people are at the heart of every decision. Choose a moment where listening or patience mattered more than speed.
9. Tell me about a time you led others or took charge.
The 2022 recruiter advice was to be ready to talk about any leadership experience in your current or past jobs. Leading a shift, training a new starter or organising a school project all count.
10. How have you been involved in your community?
H-E-B's Community value says communities should be better off by H-E-B having been there. Volunteering, coaching or helping neighbours are all fair answers. If you haven't done any, say what you'd like to get involved in.
11. Tell me about a time you handled several tasks at once.
H-E-B's Drive value is about exceeding Customers' needs, not just meeting them. Explain how you kept customers served while finishing your own tasks, and how you decided what came first. A busy shift, exam week or a family responsibility all work.
12. What questions do you have for us?
Both H-E-B's tips and the 2022 recruiter advice say to ask questions. The recruiter suggested questions about the day-to-day expectations of your role. Ask about a typical shift, training or how the department works.

How to prepare for an H-E-B interview
These steps follow H-E-B's own Interview Tips & Tricks guide and the 2022 recruiter advice.
- Research and review the job description so you can say why your experience fits.
- Prepare work examples for customers, teamwork, doing the right thing and learning something new. Class projects count.
- Practise behavioural and situational questions out loud, and consider a mock interview first, as H-E-B suggests.
- For the HireVue, use the practice question, pick a quiet, well-lit room and test your network.
- For a virtual interview, test your equipment and keep your camera on.
- For an in-person interview, arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and bring a copy of your resume. If you're unsure what to wear, the 2022 recruiter advice was business casual, or business professional for leadership roles.
- Be yourself and be humble. H-E-B's tips say to avoid arrogance or self-serving questions.
- If you didn't catch a question, ask for it to be repeated.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with customers and teammates, and both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with H-E-B and doesn't use H-E-B's interviews, assessments or questions.
