What is the Foot Locker hiring process?

You apply online for an open role, interview if you're selected, and start onboarding once you accept an offer. Foot Locker doesn't describe the steps in more detail on its careers site.

One careers site covers all of Foot Locker, Inc.'s brands: Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, WSS and atmos. Store jobs sit in the retail categories, and Foot Locker's FAQs say part-time, temporary and internship roles are available. Foot Locker's corporate site says the company is now part of DICK'S Sporting Goods; the Foot Locker careers site is still where you apply for its stores.

How do you apply to Foot Locker?

Foot Locker's FAQs describe the application:

  • Create a candidate profile on its careers system and upload your resume or CV, then apply to open positions.
  • Allow less than 10 minutes. Foot Locker says: "Creating a profile and applying to positions will take less than 10 minutes."
  • Check your status by logging in to your profile dashboard. Returning applicants log in through the portal for their region; US store roles have their own Sales Retail portal.
  • Current team members apply through the internal job portal, not the public site.
  • Not ready to apply? You can join Foot Locker's talent community for updates on openings.

If you need an accommodation to complete the application, Foot Locker asks you to email Accommodations@FootLocker.com.

Does Foot Locker have an assessment?

Foot Locker doesn't publish one for store roles. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with workplace scenarios, answer as you actually work. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based questions work in general.

What is the Foot Locker interview like?

Foot Locker doesn't publish an interview format, so expect it to vary by store, brand and role. Whoever invites you can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow; it's a reasonable thing to ask.

What you can prepare for is what Foot Locker says it values. Its careers site says "WE VALUE INNOVATION, TEAMWORK, & COMMUNITY", and its culture and values page names four values:

ValueWhat Foot Locker says
Serving the CustomerLooking for new ways to elevate the customer experience at every point
Opening the Doors"Everyone has potential to do great things"
Work Hard, Play HardEvery position matters, and everyone helps the business succeed
Support On and Off the FieldTeam members are people at work and outside it

Foot Locker also says its black-and-white stripes signal customer service and sneaker expertise. Expect questions that test both.

How long does the Foot Locker hiring process take?

Foot Locker doesn't publish a timeline. Your profile dashboard shows your application status. If you've interviewed, haven't heard back and want an update, a short, polite follow-up with the store is reasonable.

What happens after you get an offer from Foot Locker?

Once you accept a role, you start onboarding through Foot Locker's new-hire portal, linked from its returning applicant page. Foot Locker doesn't publish what store training involves or how long it lasts.

What does Foot Locker look for?

Foot Locker's careers site says it celebrates sneaker and youth culture, with customers at the centre, and its corporate site talks about unlocking the "inner sneakerhead" in everyone. It aims for a "safe, exciting, inclusive, and fun work environment" focused on "creating an exceptional customer experience", and says team members at every level are expected to bring new ideas.

For a store role, that comes down to genuine interest in sneakers and the culture around them, real care for customers, a team-first attitude and ideas of your own. Those are the points to build your answers around.

Foot Locker interview questions and how to answer them

These are the questions that follow from what Foot Locker says it looks for, plus the standard questions most retail interviews include. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at Foot Locker?

Be specific. Talk about sneaker culture, the brands you follow and why you enjoy helping people find the right pair. Linking your answer to Foot Locker's focus on sneaker and youth culture shows you've done your homework.

2. What sneakers are you into right now?

Foot Locker says its stripes stand for sneaker expertise. Name a few releases or styles you like and say why, then show you can talk about fit, comfort and use as well as looks. Honest enthusiasm beats a long list.

3. How would you help a customer who doesn't know what they want?

This tests "Serving the Customer". Ask what they'll use the shoes for, their size and budget, and what they like, then bring out two or three options and let them try them on.

4. A parent is shopping for a child who isn't with them. How would you help?

Useful for Kids Foot Locker in particular. Ask about the child's age, size, activities and what they like, explain how sizing works for growing feet, and check the store's exchange options so the parent can buy with confidence.

5. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

Teamwork is one of Foot Locker's stated values, and its careers site says team members are vital to the business. Pick an example where you helped the group hit a goal, not one where you did everything yourself.

6. What is your availability?

Be exact and honest. Say clearly which days and shifts you can work, including evenings, weekends and holidays, and whether you want part-time or full-time hours.

7. A customer wants a shoe that's sold out in their size. What do you do?

Apologise, check whether another size, colour or store has it, suggest a similar alternative and explain any way to order. The goal is that they leave feeling helped, even without the shoe they came for.

8. Tell me about a time you suggested a new idea at work or school.

Foot Locker names innovation as a value and says team members at every level should drive change. Describe an idea you raised, what you did to try it and what happened.

9. How do you stay productive when the store gets busy?

"Work Hard, Play Hard" is one of Foot Locker's values. Explain how you'd prioritise: greet people quickly, keep the stock room and fitting area organised, and ask a teammate for help before anyone waits too long.

10. Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer.

This tests "Serving the Customer" when things go wrong. Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when needed. Finish with how the customer left.

11. Where would you like to be in a few years?

Foot Locker's "Opening the Doors" value says career growth is open to everyone. If you'd like to move up, say so, and mention the next step you'd aim for, such as a supervisor or assistant manager role.

12. How would you coach a team to give a great customer experience?

For management roles. Describe how you'd set expectations, model good service on the floor, give feedback on the spot and recognise people who get it right.

How to prepare for a Foot Locker interview

  1. Pick the brand and role that suit you: Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, WSS or atmos, part-time or full-time.
  2. Have your resume ready before you start, since the application asks you to upload one.
  3. Learn the values and have one story each for serving a customer, teamwork and a new idea.
  4. Brush up on sneakers: current releases, the brands the store carries and how to talk about fit.
  5. Visit the store and notice how the team greets and helps customers.
  6. Prepare four or five STAR stories and rehearse them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  7. Bring two or three questions about training, scheduling and how team members progress.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with customers on a busy shift, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Foot Locker and doesn't use its questions.
