Fidelity Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Fidelity Investments hires in four steps: an online application, a qualifying phone interview with a recruiter if your profile matches, at least two rounds of face-to-face interviews (first with recruiting and hiring managers, then with the team), and a decision. Fidelity says most of its interviews are behaviour-based, so prepare specific examples of what you’ve achieved.

  • Fidelity asks you to limit how many roles you apply to at once, and its recruiters can see your application history.
  • It says it gives candid feedback after in-person interviews, whether or not you’re selected.
  • AI is fine for resume formatting, proofreading and interview practice, but not during assessments or interviews unless you’re told to use it.
  • Fidelity doesn’t publish how long hiring takes. It says length depends on the skills needed and the number of qualified candidates.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Fidelity Investments and doesn’t use Fidelity’s interview questions or assessments.

Fidelity Investments hires through an online application, a qualifying phone interview with a recruiter, at least two rounds of face-to-face interviews and a decision. Fidelity says most of its interviews are behaviour-based: recruiters and hiring managers ask about specific situations you've been in and what you achieved.

The process details below come from Fidelity's careers FAQ, its AI guidelines for candidates and its internships page. Where Fidelity doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Fidelity hiring process?

You apply online, a recruiter screens you by phone if your profile matches, and you then interview face to face, usually in at least two rounds. Fidelity says the process "can vary greatly in length", depending on the skills the role needs and how many qualified candidates apply. It doesn't publish a typical timeline.

How does the Fidelity application work?

You create a profile on Fidelity's careers site, submit your resume and answer the online questions as completely as you can. Fidelity then measures your profile and answers against the job requirements.

Two points from Fidelity's own advice:

  • Apply selectively. Fidelity asks candidates to limit the number of roles they apply to at once. Its talent acquisition partners say recruiters see your whole application history, and that applying to dozens of roles in a short time is a red flag. Apply first where your skills and interests overlap.
  • Tailor your resume. Fidelity's recruiters suggest comparing your resume with the job description line by line, putting the most relevant experience first and quantifying your results.

If you need an accommodation to apply or interview, Fidelity asks you to contact its HR Accommodation Team; the details are on its FAQ page.

What is the Fidelity phone interview?

It's a qualifying telephone interview with a recruiter, scheduled if your profile matches a current opening. Fidelity doesn't publish what it covers. Be ready to talk through your background, why you applied and how your experience fits the role.

Fidelity says its recruiters typically contact candidates by email, LinkedIn InMail or the phone number in your application. It never interviews over instant messaging apps, and it never asks you to pay to work there. If a message looks wrong, check it against Fidelity's official channels.

What is the Fidelity interview process?

Fidelity says most people have at least two rounds of face-to-face interviews: the first with recruiting and hiring managers, the second with the team you'd join. It also says most of its interviews are behaviour-based, so you'll be asked about specific professional situations and your accomplishments.

Fidelity's advice is to "come prepared to market yourself". Instead of listing your strengths, describe what you achieved because of them. It also suggests reviewing your resume and the job description, learning about Fidelity's culture and the business unit you'd join, and preparing questions about the role.

Does Fidelity have an assessment?

Fidelity's AI guidelines refer to assessments, so some roles may include one. Fidelity doesn't publish which roles, which tests or what they contain. Its rule is clear: during assessments and interviews, you're expected to show your skills without help from other people, outside resources or AI, unless you're specifically told otherwise. Breaking that rule "may result in disqualification".

AI is fine before then. Fidelity lists resume formatting, grammar and proofreading, and interview practice as acceptable uses.

What happens after the Fidelity interviews?

Fidelity says it gives candid feedback after in-person interviews, whether you're selected or not. If you aren't, you can apply for other roles: Fidelity updates its openings daily and says its recruiters search candidate profiles daily, so keep yours up to date.

What is the Fidelity internship hiring process?

Fidelity's 10-week summer internship runs from June to August, across eight focus areas from technology and operations to finance and client relations. One application considers you for all eight. Fidelity lists six steps:

StepWhat happens
1. ApplyIn the fall of your sophomore or junior year. Fidelity gives the window as mid-September to mid-October.
2. Resume reviewFidelity reviews your resume.
3. Recruiter callSelected students have a first phone call with a Fidelity recruiter.
4. InterviewIf your skills and experience match, you're invited to interview.
5. SelectionInterviews run on a rolling basis, and Fidelity aims to finish hiring by January.
6. OfferSelected candidates decide whether to accept.

Fidelity's internship advice says to submit only one internship application in the fall window, and that "most initial interviews will be behavior-based".

What does Fidelity look for?

Fidelity's careers site says "we put people and relationships first", and its stated goal is to strengthen and secure the financial wellbeing of its customers. Its talent acquisition partners name the soft skills they look for by type of role:

Role typeWhat Fidelity's recruiters say they look for
Customer serviceActive listening, resourcefulness (you don't need every answer, but you can find it) and a desire to help people
TechnologyCollaboration, communication and leadership, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to take feedback

One recruiter says being a team player and being coachable matter more than financial knowledge. For financial advisor roles, Fidelity says you need Series 7 and Series 63 licences, or must be able to get the Series 63 within 90 days of starting, and it looks for long-term commitment to clients and emotional intelligence.

Common Fidelity interview questions and how to answer them

Fidelity hasn't published a full question list. Its internship advice names the first three questions below; the rest are types to prepare for, built from what Fidelity says its recruiters look for. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result), which Fidelity itself recommends.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Give a short story that ends with why you want this role at Fidelity. Lead with the experience most relevant to the job description, and keep it short.

2. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Follow Fidelity's advice: don't list strengths, show what you achieved with them. For a weakness, pick a real one and say what you're doing about it. That also shows you're coachable, which Fidelity's recruiters value.

3. Describe a challenging project and how you handled it.

Choose a project with a clear obstacle. Spend most of your answer on what you did, and finish with a result you can measure.

4. Why Fidelity?

Connect your answer to something Fidelity says about itself, such as putting people and relationships first, or helping customers with their financial wellbeing. Then tie it to the business unit you'd join.

5. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was frustrated or confused.

For customer service roles, Fidelity's recruiters look for active listening and a desire to help people. Show how you worked out what the person needed before you tried to solve it.

6. Tell me about a time you didn't know the answer. What did you do?

Fidelity's recruiters say they don't expect you to know everything, but they want you to be able to find the answer. Describe how you found the information, who you asked and how you checked it.

7. Tell me about a time you received critical feedback.

Fidelity's recruiters name taking feedback for technology roles, and say being coachable matters more than financial knowledge. Describe the feedback, your first reaction and what you changed afterwards.

8. Tell me about a time you worked on a team project.

Fidelity's recruiters say being a team player matters more than financial knowledge. Be clear about your own contribution, and show how you helped the group succeed.

9. Tell me about something you taught yourself recently.

For technology roles, Fidelity's recruiters name intellectual curiosity. Pick something you learned outside a classroom or job requirement, and explain how you went about it.

10. Why are you interested in this role and not others?

Fidelity asks candidates to apply selectively, so expect interviewers to check you've chosen this role on purpose. Show how your skills and interests overlap with the job description.

11. Tell me about a time you built a relationship with a client or colleague over time.

For financial advisor and client-facing roles, Fidelity says it wants people who build long-term relationships with clients. Show patience, follow-through and trust.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Fidelity suggests preparing job-related questions, and its internship advice suggests asking about company culture. Ask about the team, how success is measured in the role and what new joiners learn first.

How to prepare for the Fidelity interview

  1. Pick one or two roles that fit your skills and interests, rather than applying widely.
  2. Tailor your resume to each job description, with measurable results. For technology roles, say how and at what scale you used each tool.
  3. Read about the business unit you'd join, as Fidelity suggests, and about Fidelity's culture on its careers site.
  4. Prepare five or six STAR stories on customers, teamwork, feedback, a challenge you solved and something you taught yourself. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you a bank to practise on.
  5. Practise out loud, with friends, your careers centre or in a mock interview. Fidelity allows AI for interview practice, but not during the interview itself.
  6. Prepare questions about the role and the team.
  7. Send a thank-you note promptly after the interview, as Fidelity's internship advice suggests.

Practising realistic work tasks
