Experian Online Assessment, Interviews and Hiring Process

The short answer

Experian’s online assessment is used mainly for technical roles and early careers programmes. In North America the early careers version is a situational judgement test, a behavioural questionnaire and a learnability assessment, followed by a one-way video interview. The full hiring process has five stages (apply, a discovery chat with talent acquisition, assessments and interviews, offer, onboarding) and typically takes three to four weeks.

  • Experian says to expect 2 to 4 interview stages, and your recruiter confirms whether your role adds technical or cognitive ability tests.
  • Experian says it tends to include a project or assessment in its interview rounds.
  • UK and Ireland early careers candidates finish with an assessment centre of about four hours.
  • Experian doesn’t name its test provider or publish question counts, timing or pass marks.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Experian and doesn’t use Experian’s assessments or questions.

Experian uses online assessments mainly for technical roles and for its early careers programmes. In North America, early careers applicants take a situational judgement test, a behavioural questionnaire and a learnability assessment, then a one-way video interview. Experienced hires usually meet a recruiter first and then go through 2 to 4 interview stages, which Experian says often include a project or assessment.

Everything below comes from Experian's careers pages and its candidate interview guide, linked as we go. Where Experian doesn't say something, we say so.

The Experian hiring process at a glance

Experian's hiring process page sets out five stages:

StageWhat happensWhat Experian says about timing
1. Easy to Apply applicationYou apply through the careers site with a parsed resume or your LinkedIn profile. Not published
2. Discovery with TAAn exploratory chat with a talent acquisition team member about the role, the team and the process. Not published
3. Assessments and interviewsOne or two assessment types tailored to the role, plus interviews. Experian's interview guide says 2 to 4 interview stages. Not published per stage
4. OfferYou review the offer through a secure link and can sign digitally in most markets. The whole process typically takes three to four weeks
5. OnboardingPreboarding documents, pre-start materials, induction and an "Experian Buddy".Not counted in the three to four weeks

What is the Experian hiring process?

You apply online, have an exploratory chat with a recruiter, complete the assessments and interviews set for your role, and receive an offer if you're successful. Experian says the typical process takes three to four weeks, not counting onboarding.

Applying

  • Apply on the careers site. Experian's "quick apply" uses your LinkedIn profile or a parsed resume.
  • You can apply for more than one role. Complete your profile once, then apply to each role you want.
  • You don't have to tick every requirement. Experian's FAQ tells candidates in that position to get in touch anyway, because it may suggest a similar role.
  • Remote roles are tied to a country. Experian says remote work must be within the country where the role is based.

The discovery chat

The second stage is a conversation with someone from Experian's talent acquisition team. Experian says it's there to check alignment, walk you through the process and timelines, and answer your questions about the company, the team and the role. Ask here which assessments your role includes.

What is the Experian online assessment?

It depends on the route you apply through. Experian's hiring process page says online assessments are "normally for technical skill based roles". For early careers programmes, Experian describes the assessment by region.

RouteWhat the online assessment involves, per ExperianWhat comes next
North America early careers (internships, Tech Xcelerator, MBA programme)A Situational Judgment Test, a Behavioral Questionnaire and a Learnability AssessmentA short one-way video interview, a technical assessment for some roles, then a final interview
UK and Ireland early careers (apprenticeships, placements, the 2-year graduate programme)An online test that shows your strengths, thinking style and how you approach different challengesA one-way video interview, then an assessment centre
Experienced hiresYour recruiter confirms whether the role includes technical tests or cognitive ability assessmentsInterviews, often with a project or assessment

Experian says the North America assessments "help us understand your strengths and how you approach workplace scenarios". It doesn't name the test provider or publish question counts, timing or pass marks, so treat those details from prep sites as unconfirmed.

What the formats mean:

  • Situational judgement test. You read workplace scenarios and choose or rank responses. Our situational judgement test guide explains how the format works in general.
  • Behavioural questionnaire. Statements about how you prefer to work. Answer consistently and honestly; there's no published answer key. Our explainer on psychometric assessments covers this kind of test.
  • Learnability assessment. Experian doesn't describe its content. Its early careers page says it looks for a "learn-it-all" mindset, the belief that abilities can be developed through hard work.
  • Technical assessment. Only for some roles. Experian doesn't publish the format, so ask your recruiter what to expect.

The UK early careers team's own advice: practise free aptitude or behavioural tests to learn the formats, find a quiet space, check your technology and allow focused time.

What happens in the Experian one-way video interview?

Early careers candidates in North America and the UK and Ireland complete a one-way video interview. Experian's UK and Ireland page says you answer pre-recorded questions, each with a set time limit. Experian doesn't publish how many questions there are or how long you get.

Experian's UK advice for this stage:

  • Research Experian and the role, so you can say why you want to join.
  • Don't use AI tools to write your answers. Experian says it wants your authentic voice.
  • Use the platform's camera and microphone check before you start recording.

Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how this format works from both sides.

What is the Experian interview process?

Experian's interview guide says the process varies by role, with 2 to 4 interview stages, in person or virtual. Its hiring process page lists the forms these can take:

  • formal interviews, in person or virtual;
  • informal interviews or coffee catch-ups;
  • assessment centres;
  • team meet and greets, where appropriate;
  • role plays or work samples.

Experian says, "We tend to incorporate a project/assessment into our interview rounds." If your role includes a presentation or supporting material, the guide asks you to send it to your coordinator or recruiter beforehand.

What Experian evaluates

The interview guide names four areas:

AreaWhat Experian says it looks for
General skillsInterpersonal skills such as respect, curiosity, teamwork, adaptability and integrity
Communication and execution successHow you express ideas in writing and speech, and a project you took from concept to completion through collaboration
Role-specific skillsExamples of the core skills and competencies in the job description
Values and cultureWhether you add to the culture and are comfortable with collaboration, innovation and accountability

The early careers assessment centre (UK and Ireland)

UK and Ireland early careers candidates who pass the video interview attend an assessment centre of about four hours. Experian says you meet the team, take part in a small group exercise, network with current students and complete a competency-based interview. Its advice is to revisit your CV for transferable skills and to practise role-play responses.

What does Experian look for?

Experian's culture values, which it calls The Experian Way, are a good guide to what interviewers listen for:

ValueWhat Experian says it means
Delight CustomersPutting clients' and consumers' needs first and taking accountability
Innovate to GrowQuestioning how things could be done better, taking risks and learning from failure
Collaborate to WinBuilding on each other's strengths, with trust and diverse perspectives
Safeguarding Our FutureTaking seriously Experian's role as a guardian of personal data, privacy and protection against fraud
Value Each OtherTreating one another with respect, trust and integrity

The interview guide adds that Experian wants people "who want to be part of something bigger than themselves", and that it wants to hire people who add to its culture.

Common Experian interview questions and how to answer them

Experian doesn't publish a question list. These are questions to prepare for, built from what Experian says it evaluates and values. Answer the "tell me about a time" questions with the STAR method, which Experian itself recommends.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short and relevant to the job description: your current role or studies, one or two achievements that match the core skills listed, and why this role is the next step. Experian's guide says being clear and concise matters more than a long answer.

2. Why Experian?

Be specific. Experian's stated purpose is to create a better tomorrow for consumers, businesses and communities, and its mission is to improve financial inclusion. Connect that, or a specific product or team you've read about, to your own motivation.

3. Why this role?

Show you've read the job description closely. Pick two or three of its core skills and give a short example of each. Experian's guide lists "strength of role specific skills" as one of the four things it evaluates.

4. Tell me about a project you took from concept to completion.

This is almost word for word what Experian's guide says it wants to hear. Choose a project where you worked with others, explain your part clearly, and end with a measurable result and what you'd do differently.

5. Tell me about a time you put a customer or client first.

This maps to Delight Customers. Describe how you found out what the customer actually needed, what you did about it, and how you took ownership when something went wrong.

6. Describe a time you suggested a better way of doing something.

This maps to Innovate to Grow. Explain what you noticed, how you tested your idea and what changed. A story where the idea failed and you learned from it also works, because Experian says it values learning from failure.

7. Tell me about a time you worked with people whose views differed from yours.

This maps to Collaborate to Win and Value Each Other. Show that you listened, used the other person's strengths and reached a better outcome together.

8. How have you handled sensitive or confidential information?

Experian's value Safeguarding Our Future is about protecting personal data and preventing fraud. Give an example of handling data, access or confidential information carefully, and why it mattered.

9. Tell me about a time you had to learn something new quickly.

Experian looks for a "learn-it-all" mindset in early careers candidates and lists adaptability among its general skills. Pick a skill or tool you learned under time pressure, how you learned it and how you used it.

10. Tell me about a challenge you overcame.

Experian's guide says its interviews aim to understand "how you overcome challenges". Choose a real obstacle, focus on your actions and be honest about what was hard.

11. How do you explain a complex idea to someone without your background?

Communication is one of the four areas Experian evaluates, in writing and speech. For data, analytics or technology roles, have one example ready where you explained a technical result to a non-technical audience.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Experian's guide recommends bringing a list of questions. Ask about the team's current priorities, how success in the role is measured, or how the team works with others across the business.

For more practice, our list of behavioural interview questions gives you a wider bank to work through.

How to prepare for Experian's hiring process

  1. Read the job description closely and match one example to each core skill it lists.
  2. Ask your recruiter in the discovery chat which assessments and how many interview stages your role includes.
  3. Prepare five or six STAR stories that cover customers, improvement, collaboration, data care, learning and a challenge you overcame.
  4. Practise the test formats if you're an early careers applicant: a situational judgement test and a behavioural questionnaire in North America, or free aptitude and behavioural tests for the UK and Ireland.
  5. Look up your interviewers on LinkedIn, as Experian's guide suggests. You may find something in common.
  6. Practise out loud without memorising. Experian's advice is to practise, not memorise, and to keep answers clear and concise. A mock interview with honest feedback helps.
  7. Check your setup for virtual interviews: internet connection, video app, camera and microphone, and a quiet private room.
  8. Ask for adjustments if you need them. Experian says it will welcome any accommodation you need, at the application stage and beyond.

Practising realistic work tasks

Experian says it often builds a project or assessment into its interview rounds, and its early careers process uses situational judgement. Both reward practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Experian and doesn't use Experian's assessments or questions.
