Dollar General Application Process and Interview Questions

The short answer

You apply to Dollar General online through its careers site, or by texting DGJOBS to 25000 to use its job assistant. In stores, hiring is part of the Store Manager’s job, and the careers site has a separate login for candidates who receive a conditional job offer. Dollar General doesn’t publish its interview format or how long hiring takes.

  • Dollar General says students and new job seekers can start in its stores with no prior experience required.
  • Sales Associate postings list customer service, the register, stocking and cleaning, and lifting up to 40 pounds frequently.
  • Its six values centre on integrity, hard work, respect and owning your mistakes.
  • Dollar General doesn’t publish an assessment, a minimum age or a hiring timeline.

The Dollar General application process starts on its careers site: search for a job and apply online, or text DGJOBS to 25000 to apply through its job assistant. For store roles, the Store Manager does the hiring. Dollar General doesn't publish its interview format or a timeline.

Everything below comes from Dollar General's careers pages and its own job postings, linked as we go. Where Dollar General doesn't say something, we say so.

How does the Dollar General application process work?

You apply online or by text. Dollar General's careers site offers two routes:

  • Search jobs on the careers site and apply to the posting you want. The store postings we read name the town and the store number.
  • Text DGJOBS to 25000. Dollar General's retail careers page says this starts a conversation with its job assistant, Olivia. Texting opts you in to hiring messages, and message and data rates may apply.

If you've applied before, use the returning candidate portal to sign in. If you've already had a conditional job offer, there's a separate login for that.

Dollar General's careers site groups jobs into retail (its stores), distribution centres, fleet, corporate roles at its Store Support Center, and its pOpshelf stores.

What is the Dollar General hiring process?

You apply, and the careers site refers to a conditional job offer stage later on. Dollar General doesn't describe the steps in between. For store roles, hiring is part of the Store Manager's job: Dollar General's retail page says the Store Manager directs the store's day-to-day operations, "including hiring and training", and a Store Manager posting in Peru, Indiana, lists "Recruits, selects, and retains qualified employees" among its duties. The same posting asks for "Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling and termination practices".

Dollar General doesn't publish how many interviews there are, how long they take, what the conditional offer depends on or how long the process takes. Ask the store when it contacts you.

What store jobs does Dollar General hire for?

Dollar General lists six store roles on its retail careers page:

RoleWhat Dollar General says it involves
Sales AssociateHelping customers, running the register, stocking merchandise in a fast-paced environment
Lead Sales AssociateLeading the team when a manager isn't on duty, including cash tasks
Assistant Store ManagerHelping guide the team, managing merchandise and daily operations while learning to run a store
Store ManagerDirecting day-to-day operations, including hiring and training, scheduling, inventory and asset protection
District ManagerOverseeing all stores in a district and coaching store leaders
Regional DirectorPlanning company objectives for store growth, partnerships and loss prevention

Dollar General says that, on average, a part-time Sales Associate can advance to Store Manager in three years without a college degree.

What does a Dollar General Sales Associate job ask for?

The two Sales Associate postings we read, in Mahomet, Illinois and Gibsland, Louisiana, ask for much the same:

  • Duties: greeting and helping customers, working the register and scanner, unpacking, stocking and rotating merchandise, building displays and cleaning the store, including floors and restrooms.
  • Skills: interpersonal and spoken communication, basic maths, cash handling, following safety rules and reading planograms (the diagrams that show where products go on a shelf).
  • Education: a high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Physical demands: frequent standing, walking, bending and kneeling, frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds, occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds and occasional use of a step ladder up to six feet.

Dollar General's retail page says students and new job seekers can start there with "no prior experience required".

Does Dollar General have an assessment?

Dollar General doesn't publish any pre-hire test for store roles, and the postings we read don't mention one. If you're asked to complete one, the message should tell you what it involves. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.

Dollar General interview questions and how to answer them

Dollar General doesn't publish a question list or say who interviews you. Hiring is part of the Store Manager's role. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what Dollar General says matters: its Serving Others mission and six values, "exceptional customer service" and the duties in its postings.

Dollar General's values, in its own words:

  1. "Demonstrating integrity in everything we do"
  2. "Providing employees the opportunity for growth and development in a friendly and fun environment"
  3. "Delivering results through hard work and a shared commitment to excellence"
  4. "Celebrating success and recognizing the contribution of others"
  5. "Owning our actions and decisions and learning from our mistakes"
  6. "Respecting the dignity and differences of others"

Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.

1. Why do you want to work at Dollar General?

Dollar General calls its mission Serving Others. Talk about liking to help people, and mention something specific: the store is in your community, you shop there, or you want to grow into a lead or manager role.

2. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short: school or work, one strength that fits retail, and why you want this job. If it's your first job, school, sport, volunteering and family responsibilities all count.

3. How would you help a customer who can't find what they need?

Show you'd stop what you're doing, walk them to it if you can, and offer an alternative if it's out of stock. That is the "exceptional customer service" Dollar General asks for.

4. Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.

Stay calm in the story: listen, stay respectful, fix what you can and bring in the manager on duty if needed. Respecting "the dignity and differences of others" is one of Dollar General's values.

5. How would you handle a long queue at the register while there's stock to put out?

Customers first. Say you'd serve the queue, call for help if someone's available and go back to stocking when it clears. It shows you understand both halves of the job.

6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?

Dollar General values "Owning our actions and decisions and learning from our mistakes". Pick a small, real mistake, own it, explain how you fixed it and what you do differently now.

7. Tell me about a time you worked hard to get something done.

This matches "Delivering results through hard work". Give an example with a clear finish: a deadline met, a job completed, a target hit.

8. How would you handle cash and keep the register accurate?

Postings list cash handling and basic maths. Talk about counting carefully, following procedures and owning up straight away if your drawer doesn't balance.

9. What would you do if you saw a co-worker doing something dishonest?

This tests integrity, Dollar General's first value. Say you'd follow store policy and tell the manager, and keep the answer simple.

10. Are you comfortable with physical work?

The postings describe standing, bending and lifting up to 40 pounds frequently. Be honest, and mention any jobs or activities that show you can keep up.

11. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

Dollar General values "recognizing the contribution of others". Describe what you contributed and how you helped or credited someone else.

12. What is your availability?

Be honest and match what you put on your application. Ask which shifts the store most needs.

13. For Assistant Store Manager or Store Manager roles: how would you hire and train a new associate?

The Store Manager role includes recruiting, selecting and retaining staff, and hiring and training. Explain what you'd look for, how you'd train someone on the register and stocking, and how you'd check their progress.

For more practice prompts, see our behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions.

What happens after the Dollar General interview?

Dollar General's careers site has a separate login for candidates with a conditional job offer, so expect an offer to come with conditions. Dollar General doesn't publish what the offer is conditional on or how long the next steps take, so ask the store manager what to expect.

Once you start, Dollar General says it offers hands-on training, and full-time team members can get tuition, book and fee reimbursement for approved programmes.

How to prepare for Dollar General's hiring process

  1. Pick the store and role you want, and read its posting from start to finish.
  2. Apply online or by text, and keep your phone handy for messages about your application.
  3. Visit the store as a shopper to see how it runs and what the team deals with.
  4. Prepare five short STAR stories: helping a customer, a difficult customer, a mistake you owned, hard work and teamwork.
  5. Link each story to a value: integrity, hard work, owning mistakes, respect and recognising others.
  6. Practise out loud. Our mock interview guide shows how to run one with a friend.
  7. Know your availability and bring two or three questions about shifts, training and growth.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories, and store work rewards quick judgement with customers, stock and the register. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Dollar General and doesn't use Dollar General's questions or hiring materials.
