Capital One's interview process starts with an online application and, for some roles, an automated assessment. Then come a recruiter screen, a hiring manager interview and a final round of interviews Capital One calls Power Day. All interviews are virtual.
The details below come from Capital One's careers site, linked as we go. The steps vary by role, so we note which roles each one applies to. Where Capital One doesn't say something, we say so.
The Capital One hiring process at a glance
Capital One's interview guide sets out the usual milestones:
| Step | What happens | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Apply online and complete the full application in Workday. You must meet all Basic Qualifications. | Everyone |
| 2. Automated assessment | An online assessment of job-related skills, such as the Virtual Job Tryout. | Some roles |
| 3. Recruiter screen | A phone call about the position, your resume and the company. | Everyone |
| 4. Virtual test | An hour-long exam on knowledge of the position, or a coding assessment for some tech roles. | Some roles |
| 5. Hiring manager interview | A 30-minute phone interview about the role and your background. | Usually before Power Day; later for business analysts |
| 6. Data Science Challenge | A take-home assignment completed before Power Day. | Data science roles |

| 8. Decision | Your recruiter tells you the outcome. | Everyone |
What is the Capital One hiring process?
You apply online, may complete an automated assessment, speak to a recruiter and then the hiring manager, and finish with Power Day. Capital One says the exact steps depend on the position, and your recruiter guides you through them.
Applying
- Apply in Workday. You click "Apply Now", enter basic details, then complete the full application in Workday, Capital One's candidate FAQ says.
- Basic Qualifications are a must. You need all the Basic Qualifications in the job description. Preferred Qualifications aren't required but can strengthen your application.
- Up to 5 active US applications. A sixth gets an automated message saying it can't be reviewed; wait until one of the others closes before applying again, or email careers@capitalone.com with the Job ID to ask for it to be reactivated.
- Sponsorship is role by role. Capital One only sponsors work authorisation where the job description says "Capital One will consider sponsoring a new, qualified applicant for employment authorization for this position."
- Referrals help you get reviewed. An associate can refer you through Capital One's internal portal; you then get an email asking you to complete your application.
- Updates go by email. To add an updated resume, don't withdraw; email it to careers@capitalone.com with the requisition number.

What is the Capital One online assessment?
Some roles ask you to complete an automated assessment after you apply. Capital One says it evaluates job-related skills such as communication, customer focus, leadership and problem solving. If you pass, a recruiter reviews your experience and contacts you about next steps.
The Virtual Job Tryout
The assessment Capital One describes in its FAQ is the Virtual Job Tryout (VJT). You receive it by email, and Workday adds a task to your profile with a link to it. Depending on the role, it mixes modules like these:
| Module | What Capital One says it asks |
|---|---|
| Manage Relationships | Make decisions and respond to scenarios you'll commonly meet in the role |
| Work Your Business Case | Review information from several sources about a fictitious business and offer solutions |
| Tell Us Your Story | Describe the work experience and background that shaped you |
| Describe Your Approach | Describe your preferred style and approach to work |
Capital One says it takes 20 to 45 minutes on average. It doesn't publish how the VJT is scored or whether you can retake it. The Manage Relationships module is a scenario-based format; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.
Student and graduate programmes
For the Analyst Development Program and the Technology Development Program (and their internships), Capital One's student FAQ says the first step is an online assessment about your background, strengths and approach to work. Other programmes start with a first-round interview with a recruiter or hiring manager instead.
Coding assessments for tech roles
Capital One's AI and machine learning recruiters describe an algorithmic coding assessment on CodeSignal after the recruiter screen: 70 minutes, four questions, all on data structures and algorithms. You get 10 days to take it, but once you start you must finish in that session. The recruiters say it's pass/fail and checks basic coding fundamentals. Capital One doesn't say which CodeSignal test it uses; our CodeSignal assessment guide explains how the platform works.
For some other positions, Capital One says you may take an hour-long virtual exam on knowledge of the role. It doesn't publish what that exam contains.
What happens in the Capital One recruiter screen?
A Capital One recruiter calls you to talk about the position, your resume and the company. Be ready to explain why you applied and how your experience matches the Basic Qualifications. Capital One's FAQ says your recruiter also discusses compensation during the process.
What happens in the Capital One hiring manager interview?
After the recruiter screen and any virtual test, Capital One says a recruiter sets up a 30-minute phone interview with the hiring manager, who discusses the role and your background to see whether you fit the role and the company. For business analyst roles, hiring manager meetings come later in the process to find the best team fit, because most business analysts interview for the job family as a whole.
Data science candidates also complete a Data Science Challenge before Power Day: a take-home assignment on data and engineering analytics, written communication and predictive modelling.
What is Capital One Power Day?
Power Day is the final round: a series of virtual interviews on Zoom about you and the skills you bring. Capital One requires candidates to stay on video for the whole of each interview. Your recruiter emails your schedule and sign-in instructions.
The interviews depend on the role:
| Interview | What Capital One says it assesses | Where it's used |
|---|---|---|
| Job fit | Your aptitude for the role, team and Capital One culture | Everyone does one or two |
| Behavioural | Problem solving, influence or results focus, through "Tell me about a time when..." questions | Most positions |
| Case | Strategic thinking, analytical and quantitative skills on a real-life business problem | Campus, business analyst, product manager and finance roles typically; others vary |
| Technical | Your technical skills as they relate to the programme | Cyber Security and Technology Development Programs (students); AI/ML roles add coding and system design |
Power Day for business analysts
Capital One's business analyst guide says candidates start with a mini case, then a virtual Power Day with two to three more case interviews and a product strategy conversation. Its recruiters say to expect a good deal of maths, and to keep track of your numbers from the start.
Power Day for AI and machine learning roles
Capital One's AI and ML recruiters say Power Day is four hour-long interviews: a technical interview (30 minutes of live coding in CodeSignal, then 30 minutes on your AI/ML skills), a system design interview, a behavioural interview and a case interview. They say all four carry equal weight in the final decision.
How do Capital One case interviews work?
A case interview gives you a hypothetical business scenario like the real work in the role and asks you to reach a recommendation. Capital One says mini-cases take about 30 minutes.
Capital One's case interview tips:
- There isn't one right answer. Make a recommendation and organise your reasoning behind it.
- Share your thinking. How you reach the answer matters as much as the answer, so be ready to back it with data.
- Explain complex ideas plainly, as if to someone outside the field.
- Leave your resume out of it. Show your skills by working through the case.
For its Strategy Consulting team, Capital One says cases are interviewer-led, cover business problems from any industry, and include maths such as break-even calculations, market sizing and simple algebra. It allows calculators when appropriate, and encourages you to build a framework specific to the problem in front of you.
What happens after the Capital One interview?
Your recruiter tells you the decision. For student and graduate programmes, Capital One says it tries to decide quickly once it has met all qualified candidates, and you'll most often hear from your recruiter within two weeks. It doesn't publish a timeline for experienced roles, so ask your recruiter what to expect.
Common Capital One interview questions and how to answer them
Capital One names two values on its culture page: Excellence, which it describes as raising the bar each day, and Do the right thing, about making a positive impact. Its behavioural interviews look for problem solving, influence and results focus. The answers below draw on those. Questions 8 to 10 are Capital One's own case examples.
1. Tell me about yourself.
A Capital One engineer who runs behavioural interviews advises keeping this slightly longer than an elevator pitch and highlighting key points without restating your resume. Finish on why this role is your next step.
2. Why Capital One?
Be specific about the team, product or programme you applied for. Link it to one of the two values in your own words, and show you've read the job description.
3. Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem.
This tests problem solving. Use the STAR method: the situation, your task, what you did and the result. Make your own reasoning clear, especially why you chose your approach.
4. Tell me about a time you persuaded someone to change course.
This tests influence. Show how you used evidence and listened to the other person's view, and what changed as a result.
5. Tell me about a time you delivered a result under pressure.
This tests results focus. Quantify the result where you can, and say what you did to keep the work on track.
6. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was the harder option.
Ties to Do the right thing. A real, modest example where you were honest or put the customer first works better than a dramatic one.
7. Tell me about a time you raised the bar on something.
Ties to Excellence. Describe a process, product or piece of work you improved beyond what was asked, and how you knew it was better.
8. What factors would you consider to increase the profits of a bus route?
Capital One's own case example. Structure your answer into revenue and cost factors, ask clarifying questions, then say which factors you'd look at first and why.
9. How many units does this company need to sell to break even?
Capital One's business analyst example. Set up the calculation out loud before you work it, keep your numbers organised, and state what the answer means for the business.
10. Should a franchise owner join a national price promotion?
A version of Capital One's Strategy Consulting sample case. Lay out the factors (costs, the promotion's terms, customers, competitors, brand), work through the profit per sale before and after, and end with a clear recommendation.
11. Walk me through a project you led. Why did you make those choices?
Capital One's AI and ML recruiters say candidates who can only describe what happened, and not why, tend to struggle. Make your own contribution clear and explain the decisions behind it.
12. Tell me about a time you received feedback and changed your approach.
Capital One's AI and ML recruiters say interviewers look at how well you incorporate feedback in real time, and its FAQ lists incorporating feedback as case preparation. Say what the feedback was, what you changed and the result.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Capital One's engineering interviewer suggests asking how engineers are developed, what created the opening and whether you can speak with future teammates. Its virtual interview tips also suggest asking how the team stays connected.
How to prepare for a Capital One interview
- Ask your recruiter which interviews you'll have on Power Day, and for technical roles, which team you'll meet.
- Set aside 20 to 45 minutes of uninterrupted time for the Virtual Job Tryout, and check your spam folder for Workday emails.
- Prepare five or six STAR stories covering problem solving, influence, results and feedback. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Practise full cases out loud, ideally with a partner, as Capital One suggests. Work through its sample case on the Strategy Consulting page.
- Brush up on quick maths such as break-even and weighted averages.
- Test Zoom, your camera and your lighting before the day; you must stay on video throughout.
- Do a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
Capital One's assessment and case interviews ask you to work through realistic business problems. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Capital One and doesn't use Capital One's assessments or questions.
