Burlington store interviews focus on how you treat customers, how you work with a team, when you can work and how you cope when the store is busy. You apply online at BurlingtonStores.jobs, and the store interviews you. Burlington doesn't publish how long the process takes.
This guide separates what Burlington publishes, on its careers site and in its hiring announcements, from what candidates report. Candidate accounts vary by store and by year, so treat them as a rough guide.
The Burlington hiring process at a glance
| Step | What Burlington publishes | What candidates commonly report |

What is the Burlington hiring process?
You find a role on Burlington's careers site, apply online, interview with the store or distribution centre, and start training if you're offered the job. Burlington doesn't publish the steps in more detail than that, so the sections below say where each fact comes from.
Burlington's careers site groups jobs into four areas:
- Stores: sales associates, receiving associates, cashiers, asset protection and store management.
- Distribution centres: moving merchandise out to the stores.
- Corporate: roles that support Burlington's off-price model.
- Students and early career: internships and development programmes for buying, allocation, finance and distribution centre leadership.

How do you apply for a job at Burlington?
Search and apply at BurlingtonStores.jobs. When Burlington announced its 2024 holiday hiring, NJBIZ reported that candidates could "search and apply for positions online" there.
If you plan to go to a hiring event, apply first. A Burlington hiring event listed by WorkSource Oregon in June 2026 asked candidates to apply before attending and to bring a resume.
Does Burlington have an assessment?
For some corporate roles, yes. Burlington's students and graduates page carries a notice for New York City applicants to its Allocation Analyst, Assistant Buyer and Buying, Planning and Allocation and Finance intern roles. It says all applicants for those roles take a HireVue assessment that "uses video interviewing and game-based assessments".
Burlington lists what that assessment looks at: adaptability, dependability, drive for results, willingness to learn, communication, relationship building, team orientation, problem solving and cognitive ability. It says it has used HireVue assessments since August 2020, that the tool is regularly audited for bias, and that you can ask for an alternative selection process or a reasonable accommodation.
If you're applying for one of those roles:
- Our guide to one-way video interviews explains how recorded answers work and how to prepare for them.
- Our guide to psychometric assessments covers the kinds of ability and personality measures game-based tests draw on.
Burlington doesn't publish an assessment for store or distribution centre roles. A few candidates mention a personality test. If you get one, answer as you actually work.
What is the Burlington interview process like?
Burlington doesn't publish an interview format. Candidates commonly report a one-to-one interview with a store manager or supervisor, sometimes after a short phone call, and describe it as short and straightforward. Questions usually cover your retail or customer service experience, your availability and how you handle difficult customers and busy periods.
Burlington's stores and distribution centres interview locally. The June 2026 WorkSource Oregon hiring event, for example, offered on-site interviews.
How long does the Burlington hiring process take?
Burlington doesn't publish a timeline. Some candidates report being offered a job on the day of their interview, especially at hiring events and during seasonal hiring, and others wait longer. If you haven't heard back within a week or so, a short, polite call to the store is reasonable.
What happens after you get an offer from Burlington?
Burlington says sales associates learn on the job, "learning the ins and outs of retail", and that store managers coach and develop their teams. The June 2026 hiring event listed paid training the week after the interviews. Burlington doesn't publish what onboarding involves beyond that.
If you're hired for the holidays, Burlington said in 2024 that seasonal roles "have the opportunity to turn into longer-term careers".
Burlington interview questions and how to answer them
These are the questions candidates most often report, plus the ones that follow from Burlington's values and role descriptions. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to about a minute: what you do now, one relevant strength, and why you're applying. For a store role, lead with anything customer-facing, even if it was volunteering or school.
2. Why do you want to work at Burlington?
Be specific. Burlington calls itself an off-price retailer and talks about delivering "WOW! deals" to customers. Say what you like about that as a shopper, and mention the flexible shifts or the chance to grow if they matter to you.
3. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was upset.
Burlington describes cashiers as the last person customers deal with in the store, so how a visit ends matters. Show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when you needed to.
4. How would you keep a busy sales floor neat and stocked?
Sales associates keep new products moving onto the floor. Talk about tidying as you go, putting stock back in the right place and checking with your team which areas need help first.
5. What is your availability?
Be honest and exact, and make sure it matches your application. Burlington hires heavily for the holidays, so say clearly if you can work evenings, weekends or extra shifts in that season.
6. Tell me about a time you worked well as part of a team.
"Build Teams & Partnerships" is one of Burlington's three core values. Pick an example where you helped someone else finish a task, covered a gap or shared the work fairly.
7. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a co-worker. What did you do?
This tests "Trust & Respect Each Other" and Burlington's stated preference for open and honest communication. Show that you raised it privately and calmly, listened to their side and agreed a way forward.
8. How do you handle a fast-paced environment?
Candidates report this one often. Give an example of a rush, a deadline or a busy shift, and explain how you prioritised: customers first, then the most urgent tasks, and asking for help early.
9. Tell me about a goal you set and reached.
"Drive Results" is Burlington's first value. Choose a measurable result, such as hitting a target, finishing a project early or reducing mistakes, and explain the steps you took.
10. What would you do if you saw a customer you thought was shoplifting?
This comes up for asset protection and store roles. Burlington says asset protection keeps merchandise, customers and associates safe. Say you would follow the store's procedure and tell a manager or the asset protection team. Confronting the person yourself puts you and others at risk.
11. How would you handle receiving a large delivery with a short deadline?
For receiving and stocking roles. Burlington's receiving teams ticket, tag and move merchandise from the stockroom to the floor. Talk about working in order, keeping accuracy up while working quickly, and following safe lifting practice.
12. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?
Burlington says great performance leads to career opportunities, and that store managers help others grow their careers. It's fine to say you'd like to learn more of the store or move into a supervisory role.

How to prepare for a Burlington interview
- Pick the right role. Read the store, distribution centre or corporate description on BurlingtonStores.jobs and apply for work that fits your availability.
- Know the three values. Drive Results, Trust & Respect Each Other, and Build Teams & Partnerships. Have one story for each.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories about customers, teamwork, busy periods and reliability.
- Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
- Visit a store if you can, so you can talk about how it looks and feels as a shopper.
- For corporate early-career roles, practise answering recorded questions out loud and set aside quiet time for the HireVue assessment.
- Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and how people progress in the store.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments and the first weeks on the job reward judgement with customers and tasks, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Burlington and doesn't use Burlington's questions or assessments.
