Best Buy usually interviews candidates twice: a 30-minute first interview (a recorded Talview video for some store roles, a recruiter phone call for most other roles) and a final round with the hiring manager and team. Expect to talk about helping customers and working in a team.
The process details below come from Best Buy's careers site at jobs.bestbuy.com: its hiring process overview, interview tips and FAQ. Where Best Buy doesn't say something, we say so. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; Best Buy doesn't publish its questions.

What is the Best Buy interview process?
Two rounds for most roles: a first interview of about 30 minutes, then a final round of 1 to 2 hours. The format of the first round depends on the job.
The first interview: Talview or phone
For some of Best Buy's most common store roles, the first round is an on-demand video interview through Talview. Best Buy says:
- You get an email invitation and five days to complete it.
- Talview shows you questions and records your answers for a hiring leader to review later.
- You get one take per question and can't go back to re-record, but you can answer practice questions first.
If you haven't done a recorded interview before, our explainer on one-way video interviews shows how the format works.
For most other roles, including leadership and corporate jobs, Best Buy's recruiters run the first interview by phone. Best Buy's phone interview tips recommend the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for your examples, and use an upset customer as their sample situation.
The final round
Top candidates are invited to a final round, usually with the hiring manager and other members of their team. Best Buy says it lasts 1 to 2 hours, is sometimes split into two interviews, and may be in person or on Microsoft Teams. Its tips: practise beforehand, prepare examples from your own experience, dress business casual, and for virtual interviews find a well-lit, quiet space.
Using AI
Best Buy says you can use AI to update your resume and prepare for interviews. Using AI during an interview is generally prohibited, except as a reasonable accommodation for a disability or where Best Buy says otherwise, and unapproved use may remove you from consideration. Best Buy also says humans make its hiring decisions.
Does Best Buy have an assessment?
Best Buy's candidate pages don't describe a pre-hire test or assessment. The recorded Talview interview is the screening step for some store roles. If a job you apply for includes a test, the invitation should tell you what it involves.
What happens after the Best Buy interview?
- Check your status by signing in to your Best Buy careers account and opening your dashboard.
- If you're not selected, Best Buy says it will tell you by phone or email.
- If you get an offer, the offer packet appears under Applications in your account.
- Some roles, not all, need a drug test. The testing company emails instructions, and Best Buy says you must complete the test within two full business days of accepting your offer.
Best Buy doesn't publish how long it takes from applying to an offer.
Common Best Buy interview questions and how to answer them
These are questions to prepare for. Best Buy says its purpose is to enrich lives through technology. Use it to shape your answers.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it under a minute: your recent work or study, one thing you're good at with customers or technology, and why you applied to this role at Best Buy.
2. Why do you want to work at Best Buy?
Link your answer to Best Buy's purpose of enriching lives through technology. Mention a product area you know or a time you helped someone get their technology working.
3. Tell me about a time you helped an upset customer.
Best Buy's own phone interview tips use this as their STAR example. Describe the problem, how you listened and stayed calm, what you did to fix it, and how the customer left.
4. How would you explain a product to a customer who isn't confident with technology?
Show patience: ask what they need first, avoid jargon, and check they understood. For a Geek Squad role, add how you'd explain a repair-or-replace choice.
5. Tell me about a time you learnt something new quickly.
Pick a product, system or skill you picked up fast and say how you did it.
6. Describe a time you worked as part of a team under pressure.
Use a busy shift, a group project or a deadline. Show what you did to help others.
7. How would you recommend a product when the customer has a fixed budget?
Ask questions first, recommend what fits their needs and budget, and be honest about trade-offs.
8. What would you do if you didn't know the answer to a customer's question?
Say you'd be honest, find out from a colleague or a reliable source, and follow up. Guessing on a technical question erodes trust.
9. What is your availability?
Give your real availability and make sure it matches your application.
10. Tell me about a mistake you made at work and how you handled it.
Pick a real, small mistake, own it, and show what you changed.
11. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training for new starters, how the team splits work across the store, or what makes someone successful in the role.
