Walmart's hiring process has four steps: an online application, an assessment for some positions, an interview and an offer. Walmart says a first application takes about 20 to 25 minutes and that it tries to respond within a week. It doesn't publish how long the whole process takes.
Everything below comes from Walmart's own careers and corporate pages, linked as we go. Where Walmart doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.
The Walmart hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What Walmart says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Apply at careers.walmart.com. No resume needed, but you enter your job history. | About 20 to 25 minutes the first time; less after that |
| 2. Assessment | Some positions ask you to complete assessments as part of the application. | "May take additional time"; no length published |
| 3. Interview | If you're picked, your application status changes to "interview scheduled". | Walmart tries to respond within a week of applying |
| 4. Offer | Walmart contacts you with an offer. | Not published. In 2021 Walmart said it made same-day offers in many cases |
What is the hiring process at Walmart?
You apply online, complete any assessment the role requires, interview with the hiring team, and get an offer if you're selected. The details below come from Walmart's hiring process FAQ.
The application
- No resume required. You'll still give your job history and other details in the form.
- About 20 to 25 minutes for your first application. Walmart saves your details, so later ones are quicker.
- Hourly roles go through the Walmart Online Hiring Center, where you can save a draft and come back to it. Accept cookies and finish on the same device; drafts appear under "saved drafts".
- No edits after you submit. Walmart's corporate site repeats this: review everything before you send it.
- Current associates apply through the career site on OneWalmart, not the public site.
- Visa sponsorship is available for certain professional or specialised management positions at Walmart and Sam's Club.
Walmart's careers site groups jobs into stores and clubs, supply chain and transportation, healthcare, technology and corporate. Read the job description before applying and match your job history to it; Walmart's own tip is to tailor each application to the role.

Does Walmart have an assessment?
Some positions do. Walmart says certain roles require assessments, done as part of the application, and that you'll see a confirmation screen once you've finished the application and any required assessments.
Walmart doesn't publish what the assessments contain, how long they take, how they're scored or whether you can retake one. Treat specific question counts and retake rules you read elsewhere as unconfirmed.

If your assessment shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general. A few practical points apply to any pre-hire assessment:
- Set aside uninterrupted time. Walmart warns that assessments add time to the application.
- Answer as you actually work. Walmart publishes no answer key, so second-guessing what it wants is guesswork.
- Read every option before you choose, especially when two answers look alike.
Walmart's hiring page also links to free interactive job previews on The Forage, if you want a feel for the work before applying.
How long does the Walmart hiring process take?
Walmart doesn't publish an end-to-end timeline. What it does say:
- The first application takes about 20 to 25 minutes.
- Walmart tries to respond within a week of your application, though some take longer to review depending on the position, its location and how popular it is.
- If you're not selected for an interview, you'll be told.
- In its September 2021 hiring announcement, Walmart said: "In many cases, we make same-day job offers." That was during a large store hiring push, so don't count on it for every role today.
What happens in the Walmart interview?
Walmart doesn't publish a set interview format or length, and it varies by role and location. The person who schedules your interview can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow; it's a reasonable thing to ask.
Walmart does say how to prepare. Its advice to applicants:
- Research Walmart's values, mission and recent investments on corporate.walmart.com before the interview.
- Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) to structure your answers.
STAR works for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide walks through it, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you a bank to practise on. For store and supply chain roles, prepare examples of:
- helping a customer who was frustrated or confused;
- working as part of a team when you were busy or short-staffed;
- being reliable: turning up, finishing tasks, following safety rules;
- learning something new quickly.
Be ready to talk about your availability too, and make sure it matches what you put in your application.
What happens after the Walmart interview?
Walmart's hiring FAQ doesn't describe the steps after an interview. What you can rely on:
- Track your status in your Walmart Careers account. Walmart lists the statuses as under review, interview scheduled and position filled, and it emails important updates.
- If you're selected, Walmart contacts you with an offer.
- Walmart participates in E-Verify, the US government system that confirms work eligibility from the I-9 form you complete when you're hired.
- If you're not selected, your hourly application stays in the system for 60 days, and you can change your preferences to other positions during that time. You can apply for non-hourly roles at any time.

If you need an accommodation at any stage, Walmart asks you to contact your manager, recruiter or recruiting coordinator.
How to prepare for Walmart's hiring process
- Pick roles that fit your availability. Only apply for shifts you can actually work.
- Have your job history ready before you start, with dates, so the 20 to 25 minutes isn't spent hunting for details.
- Check the application before you submit. You can't change it afterwards.
- Do the assessment somewhere quiet, in one sitting if you can.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories that cover customers, teamwork, reliability and learning. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Read one recent Walmart news story on corporate.walmart.com, so you can answer "Why Walmart?" with something specific.
- Bring two or three questions for the interviewer about the team, the shifts and training.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Walmart and doesn't use Walmart's assessments or questions.
FAQs
Do you need a resume to apply at Walmart?
No. Walmart says a resume or CV isn't required, but you'll enter your job history and other details in the application.
Can I edit my Walmart application after submitting it?
No. Walmart says applications can't be changed once submitted. For hourly roles you can update your position preferences while the application is active.
How long does a Walmart application stay active?
Hourly applications stay in the system for 60 days. Walmart doesn't give a limit for non-hourly roles, which you can apply for at any time.
How long after applying will Walmart contact me?
Walmart says it tries to respond within a week of your application, and that some reviews take longer. If you're not selected for an interview, you'll be told.
Is it easy to get hired at Walmart?
Walmart doesn't publish how many applicants it hires, so there's no reliable figure. It does say 75% of its US store management team started as hourly associates, so entry-level store roles can lead somewhere.
Does Walmart sponsor work visas?
For certain professional or specialised management positions, yes. Walmart and Sam's Club say they can sponsor work visas and permanent residence for those roles.
