Ulta Beauty doesn't publish a list of interview questions or describe its interview stages. It does publish its values, detailed job postings and advice for first-time applicants. This guide uses those to set out the hiring process and the questions worth preparing for, especially for Beauty Advisor and salon roles.
Everything about the process comes from Ulta's careers site and its job postings, linked as we go. Where Ulta doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Ulta hiring process?
You apply online, Ulta screens applications, and successful applicants are interviewed and offered a job. Ulta's careers pages don't describe the stages in more detail than that, and they don't give a timeline.
Some things Ulta does publish:
- Where to find jobs. The careers site splits roles into retail stores, beauty services, distribution centres and corporate, with separate pages for internships, teens, military and seasonal work.
- Hiring events. Ulta's events page lists hiring events, college visits and conferences, plus jobs at new stores before they open.
- Accommodations. If you need one to apply, Ulta asks you to call 630-410-4800 or email AssociateCareandSupport@ulta.com.

What are Ulta's hiring requirements?

For first-time applicants, Ulta's teens page advises a professional "work-ready" email address, documents that verify you can work, references and a resume.
Does Ulta use an assessment?
Ulta doesn't publish an assessment for store roles or describe one. Its AI notice says AI-enabled tools may help evaluate things like your skills, experience, licences and "responses to job-related screening questions or assessments". It names LinkedIn Recruiter, Indeed AI for Recruiting and HireEZ, and says these tools are meant "to assist, and not replace, human decision-making".
In practice, answer any screening questions in your application carefully and consistently, especially about availability and licences. If you're given workplace scenarios to respond to, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works.
What is the Ulta interview like?
Ulta doesn't publish its interview format, how many interviews there are or who conducts them. The person who invites you can tell you, and it's reasonable to ask.
Its teens page gives two pieces of interview advice: dress appropriately, because first impressions matter, and if you're not sure what to wear, ask.
The job postings tell you what the interview is likely to probe. The Seasonal Beauty Advisor posting we checked expects you to greet and engage every guest, personalise service, recommend products and services, handle refunds and exchanges, do makeup applications and skincare analysis, share the loyalty programme and credit card, and keep the store stocked and clean. Postings also say each associate should be "a champion of Ulta Beauty's mission, vision and values".
Ulta interview questions and how to answer them
Ulta doesn't publish interview questions. These are common questions for its store and salon roles, chosen to match its job postings and its six values: give wow experiences, improve always, win together, love what you do and own what you do, do what's right, and champion diversity.
Use real examples and finish each story with a result. Our STAR method guide walks through the structure.
1. Why do you want to work at Ulta Beauty?
Ulta's mission is to "use the power of beauty to bring to life the possibilities that lie within each of us". Connect that to something real: how you use beauty products yourself, a service you've had, or helping people feel confident.
2. What are your favourite products right now, and why?
Postings ask Beauty Advisors to stay informed about products and know their "ingredients and benefits". Name a few products across categories and explain who they suit and why. Show you know more than the brand name.
3. How would you approach a guest who is browsing?
Postings ask you to greet and engage every guest and personalise service to their needs. Describe how you open a conversation, ask what they're looking for and listen before recommending anything.
4. Sell me this product.
Beauty Advisors recommend products and complementary products. Ask a question or two about the "guest" first, then match one or two benefits to what they told you. Suggest something that goes with it.
5. Tell me about a time you gave a customer a wow experience.
"Give wow experiences" is Ulta's first value. Pick a moment you went beyond the basics for a customer, and say how they reacted.
6. How would you handle a guest who wants to return a product they've used?
Postings ask you to "courteously handle customer service, sales, refunds, and exchanges". Show that you stay calm, follow the store's policy and find a solution, and that you'd involve a manager when you should.
7. Tell me about a time you hit a sales or performance goal.
Postings ask you to help the store meet goals for retail and service sales and guest loyalty, including credit. Use a real target and the number you reached, or a goal from school or volunteering if you're new to work.
8. How would you tell a guest about the loyalty programme or credit card if they seem uninterested?
Postings ask you to share the loyalty programme, credit card and app with guests. Show that you'd mention the benefit that matters to that guest and respect a no.
9. Tell me about a time you worked with a team to get something done.
"Win together" is one of Ulta's values. Describe your part and how you helped someone else with theirs, such as during a busy shift or a stock delivery.
10. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you learned.
This tests "Improve always". Own the mistake, explain what you changed and show it didn't happen again.
11. What would you do if you saw a coworker doing something against store policy?
"Do what's right" is a stated value, and postings mention following loss prevention practices. Say you'd act on it and raise it with a manager, and explain why that matters.
12. How would you help a guest whose skin type or style is different from your own?
"Champion diversity" is a value, and Ulta talks about a culture where everyone can be themselves. Show that you ask questions, don't assume, and know products for a range of skin tones, hair types and needs.
13. What is your availability?
Store postings ask for a flexible schedule including days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Be honest and keep it consistent with your application.
14. For salon roles: walk me through your training and techniques.
Assistant Stylist postings ask for a cosmetology licence and a basic understanding of hair design, colour, texture and treatments. Talk about your licence, what you're most confident in and what you want to learn.

How to prepare for an Ulta interview
- Read the posting for your role and note the duties; the interview will follow them.
- Learn the six values and have one example for each.
- Visit a store and look at how associates greet guests and which brands and services it offers.
- Pick three to five products you can talk about properly, including ingredients and who they suit.
- Practise a short product pitch out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Know your availability and make sure it matches your application.
- Have your licence details ready for salon and prestige roles.
- Dress appropriately, as Ulta advises, and ask about attire if you're not sure.
- Bring questions about training, the team and the store's services.
Practising realistic work tasks
Ulta's store jobs are about guest conversations, product knowledge and selling, and those skills improve with practice on realistic situations. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Ulta Beauty and doesn't use Ulta Beauty's assessments or questions.
