Two Sigma interview questions test how you solve problems: coding, data structures and algorithms, design, and for quantitative research, open-ended data analysis and statistics. Interviewers also ask about your experience, projects and interests. Two Sigma says it aims to make every interview a personal experience that reflects your background and the roles you're being considered for.
The details below come from Two Sigma's guides to interviewing for software engineering and interviewing for quantitative research and modelling, and its internships page. Where Two Sigma doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Two Sigma interview process?
For software engineers, it's typically up to three rounds. The first is three 60-minute technical interviews. Interviewers then compile feedback and recommend whether you continue, and later interviews of about 60 minutes each cover a broader range of topics and your past work.
For quantitative research and modelling, interviews are held by video conference. You get a dedicated Recruiting Coordinator, and the recruiting team schedules a prep call beforehand to walk you through the process. Two Sigma doesn't publish the number of rounds for this track.
For internships, Two Sigma says the process is a combination of technical and behavioural interviews, to assess your technical abilities and see what you'd be like to work with.

What happens in the Two Sigma technical interviews for software engineers?
You work with your interviewer in a shared code-pair environment on data structures, algorithms and object-oriented design patterns, and you may get a systems design exercise. You can use C, C++, Java or Python. Two Sigma lists topics such as Big O notation, tree and graph traversals, recursion, searching and sorting, hash tables and concurrency.
Interviewers assess coding ability, computer science knowledge, testing, design and architecture, and general problem solving. Two Sigma says it values clean, scalable code.
What happens in the later Two Sigma interview rounds?
If you advance, you have more interviews of about 60 minutes each. They cover a broader range of topics and your experience, skills and interests, including specific projects and contributions from past roles. You can decline to discuss confidential material and the interviewer will ask something else.
Two Sigma says that if it decides there isn't a fit after a few interviews, your session may end earlier than scheduled. It tells you as you go whether you'll proceed.
What happens in the Two Sigma quant research interview?
Two Sigma describes these interviews as practical, with discussion and problem solving. They cover three areas:
- Data analysis and open-ended problem solving
- Coding and algorithms
- Statistics, or research domain expertise for PhD candidates
Interviewers also ask about your academic or professional experience and interests. Two Sigma doesn't publish the number or length of these interviews, so use the prep call to ask.
Does Two Sigma have an online assessment?
Two Sigma's interview guides don't describe one. They go straight from logistics to live interviews. Two Sigma does suggest practising sample challenges on HackerRank, CareerCup or TopCoder. If a recruiter sends you a HackerRank test, our guide to HackerRank tests explains how the platform works.
Two Sigma says using ChatGPT or any other AI tool during the process is strictly prohibited, and that suspected use can lead to disqualification.
What does Two Sigma look for?
Two Sigma describes itself as bringing "science to finance", with scientific rigour, machine learning and distributed computing at the core. Its careers page quotes its Chief People Officer: "We hire for curiosity and care." A quantitative researcher on the same page says Two Sigma hires people who think for themselves, innovate and take ownership.
| Track | What Two Sigma says it evaluates or wants |
|---|---|
| Software engineering | Coding ability, computer science knowledge, testing, design and architecture, general problem solving; clean, scalable code |
| Quantitative research | Data analysis and open-ended problem solving, coding and algorithms, statistics (or research domain expertise for PhD candidates) |
| Internships | Quantitative skills and a passion for the problems Two Sigma solves; "we can teach you the rest" |
You don't need a finance background. Two Sigma says it's nice to have, but more than half of its employees come from outside the finance industry.
Common Two Sigma interview questions and how to answer them
Two Sigma doesn't publish a question list. The questions below are built from the topics and tips in its interview guides.
1. Why Two Sigma?
Two Sigma's pitch is applying science and technology to finance. Connect your answer to that: research you've done, data you've worked with or engineering problems at scale that interest you. Since most employees come from outside finance, you don't need to pretend to be a markets expert.
2. Tell me about a project you're proud of.
Interviewers ask about specific projects and contributions. Pick one where you made the key decisions and can explain the trade-offs. If it's confidential, say so; Two Sigma says you can decline and they'll ask something else.
3. Solve this data structures and algorithms problem.
This is the core of the first software engineering round. Two Sigma's advice: analyse the problem before coding, ask for clarification, and weigh trade-offs, because brute force isn't always best.
4. What's the time and space complexity of your solution?
Big O notation is on Two Sigma's topic list, and it asks you to think about memory and performance. State the complexity, then say what you'd change if memory or speed mattered more.
5. How would you test this code?
Testing is one of the five things Two Sigma evaluates. Walk through normal cases, edge cases and failure cases, and write tests if the environment allows.
6. Design a class structure for this problem.
Object-oriented design patterns are on the list. Explain the responsibilities of each class and why you chose that structure over another.
7. How would you design this system?
You may get a systems design exercise. Start with the requirements, then cover data flow, scale, concurrency and failure cases.
8. Here's a dataset. What would you do with it? (quant research)
Data analysis and open-ended problem solving come first in Two Sigma's QR topics. Its tip is to offer a first pass, explain its limits, then improve it. Say what you'd check first and what result would change your approach.
9. How would you tell whether this result is statistically meaningful? (quant research)
Statistics is a core QR topic. Talk about the hypothesis, the test, the assumptions and how you'd avoid fooling yourself with noise or overfitting.
10. Tell me about your research. (PhD candidates)
For PhD candidates, Two Sigma may test research domain expertise in place of statistics. Explain your question, your method and your result simply, then be ready to go deep.
11. You're stuck. What now?
Two Sigma says interviewers want you to succeed and will give hints. Say what you've tried, where it breaks, and ask a focused question. Taking a hint well is part of the conversation.
12. Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem.
Ownership comes up in how Two Sigma describes the people it hires. Choose an example with a clear result where you stepped in without being asked.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask how the team works between research and engineering, what problems it's working on and what new joiners learn first.
How to prepare for the Two Sigma interview
- Read the guide for your track on Two Sigma's site, and watch its mock interview demo there.
- Practise data structures and algorithms out loud in C, C++, Java or Python, explaining complexity and trade-offs. Two Sigma suggests HackerRank, CareerCup or TopCoder.
- Read the books Two Sigma recommends: Cracking the Coding Interview, Elements of Programming Interviews in Python and The Algorithm Design Manual.
- For quant research, practise open-ended data problems and revise statistics. Practise giving a simple first pass before refining it.
- Prepare to discuss two or three projects in depth, including what you'd do differently.
- Do a mock interview with someone who'll give you hints, so taking one mid-problem feels normal. For the behavioural side, use the STAR method.
- Do it all yourself. Two Sigma prohibits AI tools during the process.
Practising realistic work tasks
Two Sigma's interviews test how you work through practical problems, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Two Sigma and doesn't use its interview questions or assessments.
