SkyWest Interview Questions and Hiring Process 2026

The short answer

SkyWest hires through an online application on jobs.skywest.com, after which qualified applicants are contacted, and some postings add a video or phone interview. Each role then has its own requirements: flight attendants complete SkyWest InFlight Training before being assigned a crew base, pilots need the ATP written before a class assignment, and airport agents pass a background check and drug screening.

  • SkyWest’s postings describe an on-time airline with high standards of safety and customer service, and a culture of teamwork, respect, quality and professionalism.
  • Flight attendants must be at least 21 and hold a passport valid for 12 months before training.
  • SkyWest doesn’t publish its interview questions, interview format or a hiring timeline.
  • Expect to be asked about safety, punctuality, teamwork and calm customer service. Prepare real examples of each.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with SkyWest and doesn’t use SkyWest’s assessments or questions.

SkyWest's job postings describe an airline that prides itself on being on time, works in a "deadline-driven environment" and keeps "high quality standards of operational safety and customer service". The interview questions below are built around those standards, and each comes with how to answer it for SkyWest specifically.

SkyWest doesn't publish its interview questions or interview format. Everything about the process here comes from its careers site, jobs.skywest.com, and the live postings on it as of October 2026. Where SkyWest doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the SkyWest hiring process?

You apply online, SkyWest contacts the applicants it wants to move forward, you interview, and you complete the checks and training your role requires. SkyWest doesn't publish a single process for every job, so the details below come from the postings for each role.

  • Apply online. Every posting we checked asks you to complete the online application. The careers site has two portals: one for Pathway Program applications and one for all other jobs.
  • Watch your email. Postings say qualified applicants will be contacted, and some warn that a video or phone interview may be added, with instructions sent by email. SkyWest asks you to check your junk folder too.
  • Expect role-specific checks. Airport agent postings require you to pass a background check and drug screening. Mechanic roles are Department of Transportation safety-sensitive positions.

SkyWest hires for flight attendants, pilots, A&P mechanics and other maintenance roles, airport agents, customer service, IT, finance, administration and management. It flies in partnership with Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, and is headquartered in St. George, Utah.

What is the SkyWest interview process?

SkyWest doesn't publish interview formats, the number of rounds or how long interviews last. What its postings do say:

  • Some roles may have an additional video or phone interview.
  • For supervisor roles, top applicants are contacted for an interview after the online application.
  • The AMT Pathway Program for student mechanics includes a guaranteed final interview to become a Level I Mechanic at SkyWest.

Ask the person who contacts you what the interview involves, who you'll meet and how long to allow. It's a reasonable question and the answer is more reliable than forum accounts.

Does SkyWest have an assessment or test?

SkyWest's postings don't mention a personality, aptitude or skills test for any role. The documented requirements are role-specific:

  • Pilots must pass the ATP written, the FAA knowledge test for the Airline Transport Pilot certificate, before SkyWest assigns them to a class.
  • Airport agents must pass a background check and drug screening.
  • Flight attendants must meet physical requirements for safe work in the cabin, including a height between 5'0" and 6'0" without shoes and corrected vision no worse than 20/40.

If you're sent an online questionnaire that shows work scenarios and asks what you would do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how those work in general.

What does SkyWest require from flight attendants?

From SkyWest's Flight Attendant posting:

  • At least 21 years old, with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A passport valid for at least 12 months, plus any visas needed to travel between the US, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas, before you attend training.
  • Excellent English for safety announcements and written incident reports.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts of up to 16 hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, and to spend long periods without supervision.
  • Willingness to relocate to a crew base SkyWest assigns after you complete SkyWest InFlight Training.
  • Appearance guidelines covering piercings, tattoos and hair, which apply from training onwards.

The posting describes the job's main purpose as keeping passengers safe on board, with customer service alongside it. New hires complete two phases of Initial New Hire training before flying as reserves.

What does SkyWest require from pilots?

From SkyWest's First Officer Pilot posting:

  • At least 21, holding a Commercial Pilot Certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings and an English Proficiency Endorsement.
  • A current FAA First Class Medical and an FCC Radiotelephone Operator's Permit.
  • A passport or other documents that let you leave and re-enter the US.
  • Within three months of the minimum hours when you apply, and meeting the FAA's ATP experience requirements (14 CFR 61.159) before employment.
  • The ATP written completed before class assignment.
  • SkyWest accepts helicopter or glider time towards total time, as long as you have at least 250 hours of fixed-wing pilot-in-command time.

Domiciles are assigned after training, and schedules are bid by seniority.

SkyWest interview questions and how to answer them

SkyWest doesn't publish a question list. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what its postings say it values: safety, punctuality, customer service, and "a culture of teamwork, respect, quality, and professionalism".

Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for the "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide walks through it.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it under a minute and point it at the role: your relevant experience, one strength that matters in an airline operation, and why you want this job now. Pilots and mechanics should mention their certificates and experience early.

2. Why do you want to work for SkyWest?

Be specific. SkyWest's postings say it takes pride in being an on-time airline and in "seeing a job done well". Connect that to how you work. Knowing that SkyWest flies for Delta, United, American and Alaska shows you understand the business.

3. Tell me about a time you followed a safety rule when it would have been quicker not to.

Safety is the first duty in SkyWest's flight attendant posting and runs through its pilot and mechanic postings. Describe the pressure to cut a corner, what you did instead and why. Interviewers want to hear that you hold the line.

4. Tell me about a time you worked to a tight deadline.

SkyWest describes a "deadline-driven environment" where on-time performance matters. Pick a time-critical moment, explain how you prioritised and show you kept quality up while moving fast.

5. How would you handle a disruptive passenger?

The flight attendant posting lists calmly resolving situations with disorderly passengers and medical emergencies. Talk about staying calm, listening, de-escalating, using the procedures you've been trained on and involving the captain or crew when needed.

6. Tell me about a time you delivered excellent customer service.

SkyWest says it wants each customer's experience to be exceptional, from first-time fliers to seasoned travellers. Describe what the person needed, what you did beyond the minimum and how they reacted.

7. Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer whose plans had gone wrong.

Airport agents rebook passengers and help those who arrive without their luggage. Show empathy first, then clear action and honest information about what you can and can't do.

8. Describe a time you worked well in a team.

Teamwork and respect are part of the culture SkyWest describes. Choose an example where you supported someone else, communicated clearly or changed your plan for the good of the team.

9. How do you stay reliable and punctual?

The flight attendant posting says you must be "reliable and punctual". Give concrete habits and a track record, such as how you plan around early starts.

10. This job can mean long shifts, nights, holidays and time away from home. How will you manage that?

Flight attendant shifts can run up to 16 hours, and flight crew are assigned a base after training. Be honest about your situation and show you've thought it through.

11. Tell me about a time you worked without supervision.

Flight attendants must follow procedures and standards without supervision, and mechanics are trained to work unsupervised. Describe a time you were trusted to work alone and how you made sure the job was done right.

12. For mechanics: tell me about a time you made a call about safety.

SkyWest's mechanic posting says you'll make critical decisions about aircraft safety in a timely manner. Describe how you assessed the problem, what you decided, how you documented it and who you told.

13. For pilots: tell me about a time you made a decision under pressure.

First officers assist the captain in conducting the flight safely and efficiently. Choose an example from your flying where you assessed a situation, communicated clearly and supported a safe outcome.

What happens after the SkyWest interview?

SkyWest doesn't publish a timeline after the interview. What its postings say comes next depends on the role:

  • Airport agents must pass a background check and drug screening, and work full-time hours during training even in part-time roles. Completing all required training is a condition of continued employment.
  • Flight attendants attend SkyWest InFlight Training, then relocate to an assigned crew base.
  • Pilots need the ATP written before a class assignment, and domiciles are assigned after training.

How to prepare for a SkyWest interview

  1. Read the posting closely and check you meet every minimum requirement, especially age, passport, certificates and physical requirements.
  2. Prepare five STAR stories covering safety, a deadline, a difficult customer, teamwork and working on your own.
  3. Know SkyWest's basics: a regional airline flying for Delta, United, American and Alaska, headquartered in St. George, Utah.
  4. Be ready for a video or phone interview if the posting mentions one, and check your junk folder for instructions.
  5. Think through the lifestyle questions about shifts, holidays and relocation before you're asked.
  6. Have your documents ready: passport, certificates and medical, depending on the role.
  7. Rehearse out loud with someone who will give you honest feedback. Our mock interview guide shows how to set one up.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories, and airline work rewards judgement under pressure. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks.
