Marriott Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Marriott interviews use the STAR technique, so expect questions about specific times you served guests, worked in a team or handled a problem. Marriott’s published process is an online application, a recruiter phone screen, one or more interviews, and a review by the hiring manager and team. The process can also include an assessment, either in the application or during the interview stages. Marriott doesn’t publish a timeline.

  • Interviews can be by phone, video or in person; Marriott suggests asking which during the phone screen.
  • Marriott’s recruiters advise knowing the specific brand, hotel and local community you’re applying to.
  • Olivia, Marriott’s AI recruiting assistant, may help schedule interviews and answer questions.
  • Marriott recommends a thank-you email within 24 hours of the interview.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Marriott and doesn’t use its questions or assessments.

Marriott interviews ask about specific situations you've handled, because Marriott uses the STAR interview technique. Its published hiring process has four steps: apply, a conversation with a recruiter, one or more interviews, and a candidacy review by the hiring manager and team. The process can also include an assessment, either as part of the application or during the interview stages.

Everything below comes from Marriott's own careers site and its Life at Marriott blog, linked as we go. Where Marriott doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess.

What is the Marriott hiring process?

You apply online, talk to a recruiter, interview with the hiring team and then wait for their decision. Marriott sets this out in its post An Inside Look at Our Job Application & Hiring Processes (October 2026).

  • Apply for a specific role. Clicking apply takes you to that position's application. Marriott recruiters review applications based on region, property and job function.
  • Match your background to the role. Marriott's first tip is to make sure your experience fits, and that your resume and application show it.
  • Use the talent community. If nothing suitable is open, join it to get emails when new roles are posted.
  • Sign in to My Job Page on the careers site to see your applications.
  • Ask for help if you need it. Marriott's careers site links to accessibility assistance for US applicants.

What is the Marriott phone screen?

It's a call with a recruiter after they've reviewed your application. Marriott says it's "used to provide you with more information on the role" and to assess whether you're a fit. Have your resume or notes in front of you.

Use the call to ask what format your interviews will take. Marriott suggests doing exactly that.

Does Marriott have an assessment?

It can. Marriott says its assessment "helps determine if a candidate's experience and technical skillset meet the role's requirements", and that it may be part of the application or happen during interviews. Marriott doesn't publish what it contains, how long it takes or how it's scored.

If your assessment shows you guest or workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, it's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.

What is the Marriott interview process?

You may have one interview or several, depending on the role. Marriott says interviews use the STAR technique and focus on your specific experience and how you respond in situations. They may be by phone, video or in person.

Olivia, Marriott's AI recruiting assistant, may help schedule interviews and answer questions. Marriott says she may not appear on the careers site in every location.

On dress, Marriott says "Smart casual is always a good option", and notes that neither its hotels nor its headquarters are overly formal.

What happens after the Marriott interview?

The hiring manager and team review your answers and qualifications and decide whether to make an offer. Marriott doesn't publish how long this takes.

Marriott's recruiters suggest you "always send an emailed thank you note within 24 hours of the end of the interview."

What does Marriott look for?

Marriott's core values are the clearest guide:

ValueWhat it means for your answers
We Put People FirstShow you care for guests and colleagues.
We Pursue ExcellenceShow pride in service and attention to detail.
We Embrace ChangeShow you adapt when guests' needs or plans change.
We Act with IntegrityShow you do the right thing when it's harder.
We Serve Our WorldShow you care about the community around you.

Marriott's recruiters add three things: know the specific brand you're applying to, know the hotel and its local community, and show your flexibility.

Common Marriott interview questions and how to answer them

Marriott doesn't publish its questions. These are the kinds of questions its STAR approach and values point to, with how to answer each for Marriott. Use the STAR method for every "tell me about a time" question.

1. Why do you want to work at Marriott?

Name the brand and the hotel, not just "Marriott". Marriott's recruiters say to know the specific brand you're applying for and the local community. Link one thing about the hotel to what you enjoy about service.

2. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.

This maps to We Put People First. Pick a moment where you noticed something the customer hadn't asked for, explain what you did and say how they reacted.

3. Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy guest or customer.

Show you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and knew when to involve a manager. End with what happened next.

4. Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work.

This maps to We Act with Integrity. Own the mistake, say how you put it right and what you do differently now.

5. Describe a time you had to adapt to a sudden change.

This maps to We Embrace Change. A late schedule change, a busy shift with people missing or a new system all work. Show you adjusted without letting standards drop.

6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team under pressure.

Hotels run on teams across departments. Describe your role, how you supported others and the result for guests.

7. How do you keep high standards when you're busy?

This maps to We Pursue Excellence. Give a concrete habit, such as checking your own work before handing it over, and an example of it paying off.

8. What is your availability?

Marriott's recruiters stress flexibility. Be honest about the shifts, weekends and holidays you can work, and make sure your answer matches your application.

9. What does great hospitality mean to you?

Link your definition to We Put People First or We Pursue Excellence, then give a real example of service you gave or received that met it.

10. Tell me about a time you helped a colleague.

Putting people first applies to associates too. Show you notice when teammates need help and step in.

11. Why are you interested in this department?

Front office, housekeeping, culinary, engineering and sales each need different strengths. Connect your experience to the department's daily work.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

Marriott says to have your own questions ready. Ask about training, what a typical shift looks like or how the team works with other departments.

How to prepare for a Marriott interview

  1. Read the job description and check your resume shows the experience it asks for.
  2. Research the brand and the hotel, and something about its local area.
  3. Learn Marriott's five core values and prepare one example for each.
  4. Write five or six STAR stories covering guests, teamwork, mistakes, change and high standards. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
  5. Ask about the interview format during the phone screen.
  6. Dress smart casual unless your recruiter says otherwise.
  7. Prepare two or three questions for the interviewer.
  8. Send a thank-you email within 24 hours.

Is the Marriott Voyage programme different?

Voyage is Marriott's leadership development programme for graduates, and it has its own eligibility rules. Marriott's Voyage FAQ says applicants must be final-year students graduating with a bachelor's degree before the programme starts, or have graduated within the past 24 months, and must have work authorisation in the country they apply in. Marriott doesn't sponsor US work visas for Voyage.

Some disciplines have extra requirements: a culinary arts degree (or significant line experience with another degree) and proper knife skills for Culinary, facilities experience or a degree for Engineering, and accounting study for Accounting and Finance.

Practising realistic work tasks

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Marriott and doesn't use Marriott's questions or assessments.
