Sephora doesn't publish its interview questions or a step-by-step hiring process. It does publish its seven core values and detailed job postings, and those tell you what the interview will look for. The questions below are built from them, with how to answer each one for Sephora.
Everything about the process comes from Sephora's careers site and job postings, linked as we go. Where Sephora doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Sephora hiring process?
You find a role on Sephora's careers site and apply online through the posting. Sephora's postings offer "Apply now" or "Start applying with LinkedIn", and say that applying with LinkedIn posts nothing to your LinkedIn account. Sephora doesn't publish what happens after you apply, how many interviews there are or how long it takes.
The US careers site groups jobs into retail, Sephora Digital, distribution centres, business operations, finance, HR and education, marketing, merchandising, technology and internships. Store roles include:
| Store role | What the posting asks for |
|---|---|
| Beauty Advisor | Experience giving excellent service and building strong client relationships; nights, weekends and holidays; punctuality |
| Sales and Service Leader | At least two years' leadership experience in retail, hospitality or service; coaching teams to goals |
| Seasonal Associate | Retail, hospitality or client-focused experience preferred; organisation and time management; peak-season availability |
All three postings ask you to be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Other store titles on the retail jobs page include Licensed Beauty Advisor, Operations Associate, Operations Leader and Assistant Store Manager.

Does Sephora have an assessment?
Sephora doesn't say. Its careers site and the postings we checked don't mention an assessment or online test, so we can't confirm one. If you're asked to take one, our guide to situational judgement tests explains one common format.
What is the Sephora interview process like?
Sephora doesn't publish its interview format, who you'll meet or how long it lasts. The person who contacts you to arrange it can tell you; it's a reasonable thing to ask. Sephora says it is committed to providing reasonable accommodation to applicants with physical and mental disabilities, so ask if you need one.
What Sephora does publish is what it looks for. Its retail jobs page says working on the sales floor "takes energy, confidence, and a winning personality" and "authentic passion", about people as well as product. Its Beauty Advisor posting says you'll be "the face of Sephora", welcoming every client "with warmth, confidence, and a passion for all things beauty".
Sephora interview questions to prepare for
Sephora's US careers site names seven core values: Innovation, Respect, Teamwork, Initiative, Expertise, Passion and Balance. It describes the company as "obsessed with teaching and inspiring our clients to play in our world of beauty". The questions below are ones to prepare for, built from those values and the postings. They aren't a leaked list.
1. Why do you want to work at Sephora?
Sephora talks about teaching and inspiring clients. Say what draws you to helping people with beauty, not only to the products, and mention something specific about Sephora's stores that you like as a client.
2. What beauty products or trends are you excited about right now?
The Beauty Advisor posting asks you to stay up to date on new products and trends and to share that knowledge. Pick two or three you know well, say why you like them and who they'd suit. This is where Expertise and Passion show.
3. How would you help a client who isn't sure what they're looking for?
Consultations are the core of the role: the posting asks for "tailored consultations and product recommendations that meet each client's needs". Walk through how you'd ask about their routine, skin or occasion, listen, suggest a small number of options and let them try before they buy.
4. Tell me about a time you built a relationship with a regular customer.
The posting asks for a "demonstrated ability" to build strong client relationships. Choose an example from retail, hospitality or any client-facing work where you remembered someone's preferences and they came back.
5. How would you make a client who's new to beauty feel welcome?
Respect is one of Sephora's values, and its retail jobs page talks about bringing each client's personal definition of beauty to life. Show that you'd meet people where they are, avoid jargon and never make anyone feel judged.
6. A client is unhappy with a product they bought. What do you do?
Respect is one of Sephora's values, so listen first and find out what went wrong. Then use a short consultation to find something that suits them better, which is what the Beauty Advisor posting asks for: "tailored consultations and product recommendations that meet each client's needs". Stay within store policy, and bring in a leader if it's beyond what you can do.
7. How do you feel about sales goals?
The Beauty Advisor posting includes contributing to sales goals and KPIs. Show you see sales as the result of good service: recommending what genuinely fits the client, and suggesting complementary products where they help.
8. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team when the store was busy.
Teamwork is a core value, and postings mention supporting inventory, merchandising and keeping the store clean. Choose an example where you stepped in to help without being asked.
9. Tell me about a time you took initiative.
Initiative is another of the seven values. Describe something you noticed and improved on your own, such as a display, a process or a regular task, and what changed as a result.
10. What is your availability?
Store postings ask for availability during peak retail periods, including nights, weekends and holidays, and the Beauty Advisor posting asks for punctuality and consistent attendance. Be specific and honest.
11. Tell me about a time you coached someone to improve.
For Sales and Service Leader roles, the posting asks for a proven ability to coach and inspire teams. Give an example with a clear before and after.
12. How do you keep a healthy balance in a fast-paced job?
Balance is one of Sephora's values, and the postings mention a fast-paced environment. Talk about how you stay organised and calm on busy days.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about product training, how the team shares new launches, or what a good first month looks like. Have two ready.
Structure your examples with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). Our STAR method guide walks through it, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise.
How to prepare for a Sephora interview
- Read the posting for your exact role. Note every duty and qualification, and prepare an example for each.
- Learn Sephora's seven core values and have a story ready for at least three of them.
- Know a few products well. Be ready to explain who they suit and why.
- Practise a short consultation out loud: greeting, questions, two or three suggestions. A mock interview with a friend playing the client helps.
- Be clear on your availability for nights, weekends and holidays.
- Bring two or three questions about training, the team and the store.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and judgement improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Sephora and doesn't use Sephora's assessments or questions.
