Safeway's hiring process has four steps: an online application on the Albertsons Companies careers site, a call or message from the HR or talent acquisition (TA) team, an interview (plus an extra step for some jobs) and an offer. Prepare to talk about serving customers, working in a team, reliability and why you want the job.
Safeway is part of Albertsons Companies, and its careers page sends applicants to the Albertsons Careers portal. The process details below come from the hiring FAQ Albertsons publishes on its distribution centre job pages, which describes the company's process in general terms. Albertsons doesn't publish a separate FAQ for store roles. Where it doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Safeway hiring process?
You apply online, the HR or TA team reviews your application and gets in touch, you interview, and you get an offer if you're the right candidate. Albertsons says it receives a lot of applications and does its best to review them all.
Safeway's careers page groups jobs into six business areas: store, warehouse, manufacturing, corporate, technology and pharmacy. Albertsons' FAQ describes its hiring process in general terms, and says the extra steps depend on the job.

How do you apply to Safeway?
Choose a role on Safeway's careers page and apply through the Albertsons Careers portal it links to. Pharmacy clerk and technician roles use a separate application link on the same careers page.
- A resume isn't required. Albertsons says it's happy to take one, and the application has a section where you can list your education, experience and skills instead.
- Use an email address and phone number you check. You'll log in with the same one later to see your status.
- Not ready to apply? The careers page lets you join Albertsons' Talent Community to hear about new jobs.
- Need an accommodation? Albertsons asks you to call 1-888-255-2269 if you need help with the accessibility of its site or want an accommodation during the application and hiring process.
What happens after you apply to Safeway?
After reviewing your application, a member of Albertsons' HR or TA team reaches out to learn more about you, your skills and your experience. Treat that first conversation like an interview: have your availability and a short summary of your experience ready.
Albertsons says its teams will call, text and/or email you. Make sure your voicemail is set up and not full, so you don't miss the call.
To check your status, log in to the candidate portal on the Albertsons Companies careers site with the email or phone number you applied with, using the person icon in the top right corner. You may be asked to verify your identity. All your applications and their statuses are listed there.
What happens in the Safeway interview?
Albertsons doesn't publish an interview format or length for Safeway store roles. Its FAQ says some jobs need an additional step, such as another interview or an on-site tour, and that CDL A truck drivers take a road test. You'll also get the chance to ask anything you'd like about the job.
The person who schedules your interview can tell you who you'll meet and how long to allow. It's a reasonable thing to ask.
What happens after the Safeway interview?
If you're the right candidate, Albertsons makes you an offer. Post-offer steps arrive by email, and Albertsons warns that these emails sometimes land in spam or junk folders, so check them during and after the offer stage.
If you're not selected, Albertsons says there may be other opportunities across its family of store banners that could suit you. Albertsons doesn't publish what its post-offer checks involve.
Does Safeway have an assessment or online test?
Albertsons doesn't say. None of its careers pages we checked mention an assessment for store roles, so treat claims about a Safeway test, its questions or a pass mark as unconfirmed.
If your application does include a set of workplace scenarios asking what you would do, that's a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how the format works in general. Answer as you'd actually behave at work, and read every option before you choose.
How long does the Safeway hiring process take?
Albertsons doesn't publish a timeline. It says it reviews applications before the HR or TA team gets in touch, and that the number of steps after that depends on the job. Check your status in the candidate portal rather than waiting by the phone.
Common Safeway interview questions and how to answer them
Safeway doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on what Safeway and Albertsons say about the work and what they value. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for the "tell me about a time" questions.
1. Why do you want to work at Safeway?
Be specific. Safeway's own history is built on value for customers, from M.B. Skaggs's first store in 1915 to pricing produce by the pound and putting "sell by" dates on perishables in the 1930s. Albertsons says it wants to help people live better lives, neighbourhood by neighbourhood. Connect one of those to something real: you shop at your local store, you like serving regulars, or you want to learn a particular department.
2. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to a minute: what you do now, one or two strengths that fit the job (serving people, working fast and carefully, being dependable), and why you're applying.
3. What's your availability?
Answer honestly and make sure it matches your application. If you can work early mornings, evenings or weekends, say so. If you can't, say what you can offer instead.
4. Tell me about a time you helped a customer who was frustrated.
Safeway's history is built on value for customers, so show that you listened, stayed calm, fixed what you could and brought in a manager when you couldn't. End with the result, ideally that the customer left satisfied.
5. A customer asks for an item that's out of stock. What do you do?
Offer a substitute, check whether more stock is coming, or point them to another option. Albertsons talks about making a difference neighbourhood by neighbourhood, and at store level that means the customer leaves with a solution, and that you're polite throughout.
6. Tell me about a time you worked in a team when it was busy.
Grocery stores have rushes, and Safeway's careers page talks about a dynamic atmosphere. Describe a time you pitched in beyond your own task, communicated with others and kept standards up under pressure.
7. How do you keep your work area clean and safe?
For food departments, talk about cleaning as you go, labelling, rotating stock and following food safety rules. For warehouse roles, Albertsons says it prides itself on its warehouse safety record, so give a concrete example of following safety procedures.
8. What would you do if a co-worker was breaking a safety or store rule?
Show you'd act. Albertsons says it prides itself on its warehouse safety record, so speak to them if it's appropriate, and tell a manager if it's a safety issue or it carries on. Avoid answers where you ignore it.
9. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
Safeway's careers page describes an atmosphere that helps you learn and grow every day. Pick an example of picking up a new system, product range or task and say how quickly you became confident with it.
10. Which department would you like to work in, and why?
Name one (bakery, deli, produce, meat, front end, pharmacy) and give a reason tied to your experience or interests. Showing you've thought about the role beats saying you'll do anything.
11. For pharmacy roles: how would you look after a patient's privacy?
Safeway's careers page describes pharmacy clerks as being on the frontline of healthcare. Talk about keeping patient details confidential, speaking discreetly at the counter and passing clinical questions to the pharmacist.
12. Do you have any questions for us?
Albertsons says you'll be able to ask anything that helps you learn about the job. Ask about training, the shifts the team needs covering and what a strong first month looks like.
How to prepare for a Safeway interview
- Read the job posting and note the department, the shifts and any requirements.
- Have your work history ready, with dates, even if you don't upload a resume.
- Set up your voicemail and keep an eye on texts and email, including spam.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customers, teamwork, reliability, safety and learning something new. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who'll give you honest feedback.
- Visit your local Safeway and notice how the department you're applying to works, so you can answer "why Safeway?" with something specific.
- Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and the team.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Day-one judgement, like handling a queue, a complaint and a stock problem at once, improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Safeway or Albertsons Companies and doesn't use their interview questions or assessments.
