Panera hires cafe staff through its careers site and through open interview days at individual cafes. Its interview questions follow what its job postings ask for: warm service, teamwork, reliability, flexible availability and staying calm when the cafe is busy.
The details below come from Panera's careers site, its current job postings and event listings, and its US job applicant privacy notice. Panera doesn't publish its interview questions, so the questions further down are the topics its postings and values point to, with how to answer each one.

What is the Panera hiring process?
You apply for a cafe job on Panera's careers site or at an open interview day, interview with the cafe's leadership team, and receive an offer if you're selected. Panera doesn't publish how long this takes or how many interviews to expect.
Panera's careers site groups jobs into restaurant team members, bakers, delivery drivers, restaurant managers, manufacturing and distribution, and support centre (corporate) roles. Team members work in areas such as production, prep, service, cashier, expo, drive-thru, barista and quality control.
One thing to check before you apply: some Panera cafes are run by franchisees. Panera's careers site says that if you have questions about a job at a franchisee location, you should contact that franchisee directly. Their hiring steps may differ from those below.

How do you apply to Panera?
Search for jobs near you on careers.panerabread.com and apply for the role and cafe you want. Read the posting first: Panera's postings list the minimum age, physical requirements and the shifts you need to be available for.
From the postings we checked:
- Restaurant team members must meet a minimum age of 16, lift up to 25 lbs and stand for long periods. Food service experience is preferred but not required.
- Managers must be at least 18. One year or more of restaurant management experience is preferred, along with ServSafe certification or the ability to get it.
- Both ask for flexible availability, including evenings or nights, weekends and, for team members, holidays.
If you need an accommodation for the application or interview, Panera asks you to email ApplicantAccommodations@panerabread.com.
What are Panera open interviews?
Panera's careers site lists open interview days and hiring events at individual cafes. The listings we checked invited people to "Interview on the Spot", asked them to bring a resume, and in some cases to register first. Some events were for team members and team leaders; others were for general managers and assistant managers.
If there's an open interview day near you, it can be the quickest way to meet the managers. Check the listing for the date, time and which roles it covers.
What happens in the Panera interview?
Panera doesn't publish an interview format or length. Its manager postings say managers take part in the interviewing and selection process, so expect to speak with the cafe's leadership team. Ask whoever schedules your interview who you'll meet and how long to allow.
The questions are likely to follow the posting. For team members, that means how you treat guests, how you work with a team, whether you can handle a fast-paced, loud kitchen and counter, and your availability. For managers, it adds leading shifts and coaching a team to goals in sales, speed, order accuracy and guest experience.
Does Panera have an assessment or online test?
Panera doesn't publish any online assessment for cafe roles, and its applicant privacy notice doesn't describe one. If you're asked to complete one, the invitation should explain what it involves. If it shows you workplace scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works.
What happens after the Panera interview?
If you're selected, you'll get an offer. Panera doesn't publish how long a decision takes. What it does say:
- Background checks: one Panera hiring event listing says offers for managers and catering leads depend on a background check. Panera's applicant privacy notice says a background check may review criminal conviction history, credit history and/or drug test information, and that you'll get a separate written notice and a chance to consent first.
- Right to work: Panera participates in E-Verify for all positions, which confirms work eligibility from the I-9 form you complete when you're hired.
- Food safety: team member postings ask you to complete basic food safety training, with a food handler's card where the law requires one.
What does Panera look for?
Panera's postings describe two things: "Panera Warmth" for guests, and its Guiding Values and Behaviors for the team.
| Panera Warmth (guests) | Guiding Values and Behaviors (team) |
|---|---|
| Sharing a warm welcome | Making people smile |
| Delivering food with gratitude | Learning and growing together |
| Always looking for ways to help | Finding solutions and taking initiative |
| Building personal connections | Working (and winning) as a team |
| Finding moments to surprise and delight | Having fun and celebrating success |
| Seeing the best in others |
Team member postings also ask for strong interpersonal skills, reliability and punctuality, the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and clear communication in a loud environment. Build your answers around these.
Common Panera interview questions and how to answer them
Panera doesn't publish its interview questions. These are the topics its postings and values point to. Use the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) for any "tell me about a time" question.
1. Why do you want to work at Panera?
Be specific. Mention something you like about the cafe, the food or the guests, and link it to what Panera's postings say: making people smile and building personal connections with guests. If you're a regular, say so.
2. What is your availability?
Panera's postings ask for flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and holidays for team members. Give an honest, specific answer, and make sure it matches your application. Only offer shifts you can actually work.
3. Tell me about a time you gave a customer great service.
This is Panera Warmth. Pick an example where you went beyond the basics: you noticed what someone needed, helped without being asked, or made their visit better. If you haven't worked in food service, a school, volunteering or retail example works.
4. How would you handle a guest whose order was wrong?
Panera's postings ask you to deliver excellent service "in every circumstance". Listen, apologise, fix the order quickly, and tell a manager if you need to. Show you'd stay calm and friendly, and that you see it as a chance to win the guest back.
5. How do you handle a rush when the line is out the door?
The postings ask you to thrive in a fast-paced environment and multitask. Describe how you prioritise, keep accuracy up while working fast, and stay friendly under pressure. A short example from a busy shift, an exam period or a sports team works.
6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
"Working (and winning) as a team" is one of Panera's values. Describe a time you helped a teammate, covered a gap or shared the load, and what the team achieved. Panera's postings also mention helping set up the next shift, so small acts of support count.
7. Tell me about a time you took initiative.
Panera lists "finding solutions and taking initiative" as a value. Choose a moment when you spotted a problem and fixed it without being told: restocking before something ran out, tidying a messy area, or suggesting a better way to do a task.
8. Why should we trust you to be reliable?
Team member postings ask for someone reliable and punctual. Give evidence: a record of turning up on time at work, school or volunteering, how you handle a shift you can't make, and how you plan around your other commitments.
9. How do you feel about following food safety and cleaning rules?
The postings say you'll follow food safety standards and cleaning protocols. Say you take them seriously and explain why: they protect guests and the team. If you have a food handler's card or ServSafe certification, mention it.
10. What would you do if a teammate wasn't pulling their weight?
Panera's values include "seeing the best in others". Start by assuming good intent, offer to help, and talk to them directly. If it carries on and affects guests, raise it with your manager.
11. Which area of the cafe would you like to work in?
Panera's team members work in areas such as prep, production, cashier, barista and drive-thru. Name the area you'd like and why, and add that you're happy to learn others. "Learning and growing together" is one of its values.
12. (Managers) How do you coach a team member who is struggling?
Manager postings ask you to coach, inspire and motivate team members to meet goals in sales, speed, order accuracy and guest experience. Describe how you'd find the cause, show them the standard, give feedback on the shift, and recognise improvement.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
Ask about training for your area, how shifts are scheduled, and what the best team members at that cafe do well.
Our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions give you more to practise on.
How to prepare for the Panera interview
- Read the posting for your role and cafe, including the minimum age, physical requirements and shifts.
- Check whether the cafe is run by Panera or a franchisee, so you know who to contact with questions.
- Know your availability and keep it consistent with your application.
- Prepare four or five short STAR stories covering guest service, teamwork, reliability, taking initiative and handling a rush.
- Learn Panera Warmth and the Guiding Values and Behaviors, and match each story to one of them.
- Look for an open interview day near you on Panera's careers site, and bring a resume if you go.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring two or three questions for the manager about training, shifts and the team.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and the job itself rewards judgement under pressure, which improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Panera Bread and doesn't use Panera's interview questions or assessments.
FAQs
How old do you have to be to work at Panera?
The Restaurant Team Member posting we checked asks for a minimum age of 16. The Assistant Manager posting we checked asks for at least 18. Check the posting for the cafe you're applying to.
Do you need experience to work at Panera?
Not for team member roles. The team member posting we checked says food service experience is preferred but not required. Manager roles prefer at least a year of restaurant management experience.
How long does the Panera hiring process take?
Panera doesn't publish a timeline. Open interview days let you interview on the spot, which can speed things up, but Panera doesn't say when you'll hear back.
Does Panera drug test?
Panera doesn't publish a drug-test policy for cafe roles. Its applicant privacy notice says a background check may review criminal conviction history, credit history and/or drug test information, and that you'll get a separate written notice and a chance to consent before one.
Do I need a resume for a Panera interview?
Panera's open interview listings ask you to bring one. A short resume with your work, school or volunteering history and your availability is enough for a team member role.
Are Panera franchise jobs different?
They can be. Panera's careers site says some jobs are at franchisee-operated locations, and that questions about those jobs go to the franchisee directly.
