Burger King Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

About 95% of Burger King restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, so the restaurant you apply to usually runs its own interview. You find restaurant jobs on careers.bk.com, apply to the restaurant you want and, if shortlisted, interview with that restaurant. Burger King doesn’t publish who interviews you or how long it takes. Prepare short examples of fast, friendly service, teamwork under pressure and reliability.

  • Burger King doesn’t publish a standard interview format, number of rounds or hiring timeline.
  • Corporate jobs are separate and listed on careers.rbi.com, the site of parent company Restaurant Brands International.
  • RBI says its own recruiting never asks candidates for payment and never involves interviewing by instant message.
  • RBI’s values include ownership, meritocracy and being “a hard-working, good person”.

Burger King interview questions test whether you can give fast, friendly service as part of a busy team. The details depend on who owns the restaurant. Burger King's parent company, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), says approximately 95% of Burger King restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, so most restaurant jobs are with a franchisee that runs its own hiring.

Below is what Burger King's parent company says about applying and recruiting, then questions to prepare for with how to answer each one. Where nothing is published, we say so.

What is the Burger King hiring process?

You apply to a posting, interview, and the employer decides. For most restaurant jobs, that employer is a franchisee. RBI's careers site tells anyone interested in a job at one of its restaurants to go to each brand's own careers site, which for Burger King is careers.bk.com.

Because franchisees run their own restaurants, two Burger King restaurants in the same town can interview differently. Read the posting carefully and ask the restaurant what to expect.

How do you apply for a Burger King job?

Search careers.bk.com for restaurant roles near you and apply to the posting. You can also ask your local restaurant whether it's hiring.

Burger King and RBI don't publish a company-wide minimum age or experience requirement for restaurant roles, so check the posting. RBI's recruiter fraud warning sets out a few rules for its own recruiting:

  • No payment. RBI says it will never ask for payment of any kind as part of recruiting, or ask you to buy products or services.
  • No banking details up front. RBI doesn't ask for banking details before your employment starts.
  • No instant-message interviews. RBI says its recruiting process never involves interviewing via instant message.

If someone claiming to recruit for RBI breaks any of these rules, treat it as a scam. Franchisees hire separately, so if anyone asks you for money or banking details before you start, check with the restaurant that the posting is genuine.

What is the Burger King interview like?

Burger King doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and franchisees set their own. When the restaurant contacts you, ask who you'll meet and how long to allow.

The posting for your restaurant lists its duties, so prepare examples that match them. Expect questions about service, teamwork, reliability and availability.

Does Burger King have an assessment?

Burger King doesn't publish a pre-hire test for restaurant roles. If a restaurant's application asks scenario questions about what you'd do at work, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.

Burger King interview questions and how to answer them

Burger King doesn't publish a question list, and each restaurant chooses its own. These are questions to prepare for, matched to fast food work and to the values of Burger King's parent company: Dream Big, Ownership ("You value things more when you own them"), Meritocracy, Diversity, Creativity & Innovation, and Authenticity ("Be a hard-working, good person"). Franchisees may describe their own values differently.

Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.

1. Why do you want to work at Burger King?

Be honest and practical: the hours suit you, you like busy work with people, or you want to learn how a restaurant runs. Add one thing you've noticed about the restaurant you're applying to.

2. Tell me about yourself.

Keep it short: school or work, one thing you're good at and why a fast-paced team job suits you. For a first job, school, sport, volunteering and family responsibilities all count.

3. What is your availability?

Be specific and honest, and match what you put on your application. Say clearly which days and times you can reliably work, including weekends and evenings.

4. How would you handle a customer who says their order is wrong?

Listen, apologise, fix the order quickly and check they're happy. Keep it calm and friendly, and say you'd get a manager if you couldn't solve it yourself.

5. How do you handle a rush at the counter or drive-thru?

Show that you stay calm, focus on accuracy as well as speed, and keep communicating with your team. Ownership is one of RBI's values, so show you'd take charge of your own station. A short example from school, sport or another job helps.

6. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.

Describe what you did and how you helped someone else. Diversity is one of RBI's values, so a story about working well with people different from you fits.

7. Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem.

Ownership is one of RBI's values. Pick a small, real example where you fixed something without being asked and saw it through.

8. Tell me about a time you were given feedback.

RBI describes its culture as a meritocracy, where growth depends on what you do and how you do it. Show that you took feedback, changed something and improved.

9. How do you feel about cleaning duties?

Be positive. Keeping the kitchen, dining room and restrooms clean is part of restaurant work. Say you'll do it properly and follow food safety rules.

10. What would you do if you saw a co-worker breaking a food safety rule?

Say you'd remind them politely and tell a manager if it continued. Food safety protects customers, and the honest answer fits "be a hard-working, good person".

11. Where do you see yourself in a year or two?

If you're interested in becoming a shift leader or manager, say so. RBI says its culture of meritocracy creates opportunities to grow.

12. For shift leader or manager roles: tell me about a time you led a team through a busy shift.

Describe how you set priorities, placed people where they were needed and kept service moving, and what the result was. RBI describes its culture as a meritocracy, so be specific about your own part.

What happens after the Burger King interview?

The restaurant tells you. Burger King doesn't publish how long a decision takes. If you haven't heard back, contact the restaurant where you applied, in person or by phone at a quiet time.

How do Burger King corporate jobs work?

Corporate roles are with RBI and listed at careers.rbi.com, grouped by function such as marketing, finance, legal, IT and digital, and supply chain. RBI lists corporate offices in Toronto, Miami, Zug, Singapore and Jacksonville. It doesn't publish a corporate interview process. If nothing fits, you can join RBI's talent community to hear about new openings.

How to prepare for a Burger King interview

  1. Read the posting for the restaurant you're applying to and note its hours and duties.
  2. Visit the restaurant as a customer and watch how the team handles a busy period.
  3. Prepare five short STAR stories: a busy moment, an unhappy person, teamwork, feedback and owning a problem.
  4. Know your availability before you're asked.
  5. Practise saying your answers out loud. Our mock interview guide shows how to run one with a friend.
  6. Bring two or three questions about training, shifts and what a good first month looks like.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories, and the job rewards calm judgement with customers and teammates during a rush. Both improve with practice on realistic tasks.
