Applebee's interviews for restaurant roles centre on guest service, teamwork, availability and why you want to work there. You search for openings on the Applebee's restaurant jobs page and apply through the hiring restaurant's own system.
The key fact about hiring at Applebee's: each job posting is for "an independently owned and operated franchisee of Applebee's", and Applebee's says its corporate company "has no involvement in hiring decisions" at those restaurants. Dine Brands, which owns Applebee's, reported in its 2024 annual report that nearly all Applebee's restaurants are franchised. So the interview you get depends on who runs your local restaurant.
Everything below comes from Applebee's own careers pages and Dine Brands' filing, linked as we go. Where Applebee's is silent, we say so.

What happens in the Applebee's interview?
Applebee's doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds, and the franchisee running each restaurant sets its own process. A local careers page says only: "We look forward to meeting you at your interview."
When you're invited, ask who you'll meet and how long to allow. Bring your availability in writing so you can answer scheduling questions exactly.
Does Applebee's have an assessment?
Applebee's doesn't mention an assessment on its careers pages. Some franchisees may use one as part of their own application; if yours does, the application system will tell you. If you're shown workplace scenarios and asked what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works.
How long does the Applebee's hiring process take?
Applebee's doesn't publish a timeline, and it varies by franchisee. If you haven't heard back, contact the restaurant you applied to, as Applebee's directs candidates to the franchisee.
What happens after the Applebee's interview?
Applebee's doesn't describe the steps after an interview. The franchisee makes the decision and contacts you. Applebee's says restaurant team members and their children can access continued education resources and are eligible for its Bill Palmer Legacy Scholarship.
Applebee's interview questions
Applebee's doesn't publish its questions. These are the topics its own careers pages point to, with how to answer each one for Applebee's.
1. Why do you want to work at Applebee's?
Applebee's pitches "stability with flexibility" and a "fun, friendly, and inclusive culture". Say what draws you: a schedule that fits your life, a team atmosphere, or a first step into restaurant work. Mention your local restaurant if you've eaten there.
2. What does great guest service look like to you?
Applebee's says "guests are welcomed as neighbors". Describe a specific way you'd make a regular feel recognised and a first-time guest feel at ease: greeting them quickly, checking back at the right moments, remembering an order.
3. Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer.
Applebee's says "guests are welcomed as neighbors", so recovering an unhappy guest matters. Use a real example. Explain how you listened, what you did to fix it, and when you brought in a manager. Show you stayed calm and kept the guest's evening on track.
4. How do you work with a team when the restaurant is busy?
Applebee's says "we take care of one another, just like family". Give an example of covering for a teammate, running food that wasn't yours or helping clear a rush, and what you said to keep everyone coordinated.
5. What is your availability?
Applebee's highlights the ability to adapt your schedule to your needs, but restaurants still need cover at peak times. Be exact about the days and hours you can work, including evenings and weekends, and don't promise shifts you can't keep.
6. How would you handle several tables needing you at once?
For server and bartender roles, explain how you prioritise: greet new tables quickly, deliver food that's ready, then handle requests in order. Show you'd ask a teammate for help before a guest waits too long, in line with Applebee's "We take care of one another, just like family".
7. How do you keep food safe and your station clean?
Applebee's lists Line Cook, Prep Cook, General Utility / Dishwasher and Sanitation Specialist roles. For these, talk about following recipes and portion guides, labelling and dating, washing hands and cleaning as you go. If you hold a food handler card, say so.
8. Tell me about a time you learned something new quickly.
Applebee's says "hard work opens opportunity" and offers opportunities to advance. Pick an example where you picked up a skill fast, and say how you'd approach learning the menu or the kitchen line.
9. How would you handle a to-go order that's wrong when the guest arrives?
For to go roles, including Applebee's Carside To Go Specialist, explain how you'd apologise, fix it fast with the kitchen, and check orders before they leave next time.
10. Where do you see yourself growing at Applebee's?
Applebee's lists "opportunities to advance" and shift supervisor, manager and general manager roles. If you're interested in leading a shift one day, say so and say what you'd want to learn first.
11. As a manager, how would you lead a team through a short-staffed shift?
For manager roles, describe how you'd redeploy people, jump on the floor yourself, keep guests informed of waits and look after the team afterwards. Tie it to the "take care of one another" culture Applebee's describes.
Our list of behavioural interview questions has more examples to practise with, and the STAR method gives you a simple way to structure "tell me about a time" answers.
How to prepare for an Applebee's interview
- Check who the employer is. Your posting is with a franchisee; note its name for the interview and for follow-ups.
- Write down your availability before you apply, and keep it consistent.
- Prepare three or four short stories covering guest service, teamwork in a rush, learning quickly and being reliable.
- Know the role. A host greets and seats; a server assistant supports servers; a line cook works to recipes under time pressure. Prepare for the questions that fit.
- Visit or look up your local restaurant so you can talk about it specifically.
- Practise out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Bring two questions about training, shifts and who you'd work alongside.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories, and on-the-job judgement improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Applebee's and doesn't use Applebee's assessments or questions.
