Outback Steakhouse Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Outback doesn’t publish its interview questions. Expect questions about your availability and how you look after guests, since its careers page mentions rotating closings, weekends and holidays and an “AUS-SOME experience” for guests. You apply online at careers.outback.com for a role at a specific restaurant. Outback doesn’t publish its interview steps or a timeline, so prepare answers that show the “dedicated, fun-loving” attitude and guest-first service it says it wants.

  • The most common hourly roles are host, bartender, server, head wait server, line cook, prep cook, take-away person, trainer and dishwasher.
  • Outback’s motto for guests is “No Rules, Just Right”: doing what it takes to make each guest happy.
  • Parent company Bloomin’ Brands names four values: Hospitality, Inclusion, Ownership and Fun.
  • Some Outback restaurants are run by franchise operators, so check who the employer is on each posting.

How do you apply to Outback Steakhouse?

Go to careers.outback.com and choose hourly or management opportunities. Search by location, state or city, open a listing and select "Apply Now". The careers site also has a chat assistant called "Sydney" that can help you get started.

Some listings let you apply through the Workstream hiring app. Some Outback postings also come from franchise operators rather than Bloomin' Brands, so check the employer named on the posting.

Corporate roles at the Bloomin' Brands Restaurant Support Center in Tampa, Florida, are listed separately on the Bloomin' Brands careers site.

Outback doesn't publish one. If you're asked to complete a questionnaire with workplace scenarios, our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general. Answer as you'd actually work.

Outback doesn't publish an interview format, length or who will interview you. With a management team of a Managing Partner, two Managers and a Kitchen Manager in each restaurant, ask whoever contacts you which of them you'll meet and how long to allow.

Dress neatly, arrive on time and bring a copy of your resume, even if you applied online.

What does Outback Steakhouse look for?

Its hiring site sums up the attitude as "Have fun, work hard, love your life!" Its about page adds the guest promise "No Rules, Just Right" and an emphasis on "consistently high quality delicious food".

Outback also describes a principle: if it takes care of its people, from Outbackers to customers, suppliers, neighbours and partners, the company will succeed. Bloomin' Brands lists four values:

Hospitality"We act from our hearts and take care of Our People."Warmth with guests and teammates

Outback Steakhouse interview questions and how to answer them

These questions follow from the roles Outback hires for and the values it publishes. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.

1. Why do you want to work at Outback Steakhouse?

Be specific. Mention the guest experience, the team atmosphere or the energy Outback describes ("Have fun, work hard, love your life!"). If you've eaten there, say what stood out.

2. What is your availability?

Be exact and honest, and say whether you can work evenings, weekends and holidays. For management roles, Outback says managers rotate shifts, including closings, weekends and holidays.

3. Tell me about your restaurant or customer service experience.

Describe the pace and the volume you've handled. If you haven't worked in a restaurant, use any job where you served customers or worked under time pressure.

4. A guest says their steak isn't cooked the way they ordered. What do you do?

This tests "No Rules, Just Right" and Hospitality. Show that you'd apologise, take it back straight away, tell the kitchen exactly what's needed, keep the guest updated and involve a manager if it calls for more.

5. A guest asks for something that isn't on the menu. How do you respond?

"No Rules, Just Right" means looking for a yes where you can. Say you'd check with the kitchen or a manager before promising anything, and offer the closest option if it isn't possible.

6. How would you handle several tables at once during a rush?

For servers. Explain how you'd prioritise: greet new tables quickly, keep track of orders, and ask teammates for help before anyone waits too long.

7. How do you keep food quality consistent during a busy service?

For line and prep cooks. Talk about prep, following recipes and plating standards, keeping your station clean and calling out problems early, which reflects Outback's focus on "consistently high quality" food.

8. A take-away order is wrong when the guest arrives to collect it. What do you do?

For take-away roles. Apologise, fix it as fast as you can, keep the guest informed while they wait, and tell the kitchen what went wrong so it doesn't happen again.

9. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate.

This maps to taking care of "Our People". Pick an example where you covered a section, helped someone catch up or trained a new colleague, and say what happened as a result.

10. Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.

Show Hospitality and Ownership with a specific example: what you noticed, what you did that wasn't required and how the customer responded.

11. What does having fun at work mean to you?

Fun is one of Bloomin' Brands' four values. Show that you bring energy and good humour to a shift while still getting the work done properly.

12. How would you support your team as a manager?

For Manager, Kitchen Manager and Managing Partner roles. Describe how you'd coach, recognise good work, handle a difficult conversation and serve guests yourself when the restaurant is busy, in line with Outback's description of management "focused on serving our customers and supporting fellow Outbackers".

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask two or three: how training works for your role, what a typical shift looks like, or what the restaurant's busiest times are.

Our lists of behavioural interview questions and situational interview questions cover the same themes if you want more practice.
