Olive Garden interviews usually cover when you can work, how you look after guests, how you work with a team and why you want the job. You apply online at jobs.olivegarden.com, and the restaurant interviews you. Olive Garden doesn't publish how long the process takes.
Olive Garden is part of Darden Restaurants, so this guide draws on both companies' careers pages, and separates what they publish from what candidates report. Candidate accounts vary by restaurant and by year, so treat them as a rough guide.

What is the Olive Garden hiring process?
You apply online for a specific role, interview at the restaurant, and start training if you're offered the job. Olive Garden doesn't publish the steps in more detail, so the sections below say where each fact comes from.
Olive Garden hires for two groups of roles:
- Hourly: hosts, servers, bartenders, bussers, To-Go specialists, dishwashers, prep cooks and line cooks.
- Management: Service Managers, Culinary Managers and Lobby, Bar and Off-Premises Managers, with routes on to general manager and beyond.

What is the Olive Garden application process?
Go to jobs.olivegarden.com and search by keyword, requisition number or location, or use the map to find restaurants near you. Choose the hourly or management section, pick a role at a specific restaurant and complete the online application.
Darden's restaurant careers page works the same way: hourly applicants choose a brand and apply at its restaurants, and management openings are listed separately. If you need an accommodation to complete the application, Darden lists an email address and phone number on that page.
Restaurants also hold local hiring events from time to time. In April 2023, for example, CareerSource Broward listed a server hiring event at an Olive Garden in Fort Lauderdale, with applications taken through the state job board. Check each event listing for how to apply.
Does Olive Garden have an assessment?
Olive Garden doesn't publish one. A few candidates mention a short personality questionnaire. If you get one, answer as you actually work; our guide to situational judgement tests explains how scenario-based questions work in general.
What is the Olive Garden interview process like?
Olive Garden doesn't publish an interview format. Candidates commonly report a first interview with a restaurant manager, and sometimes a second with the general manager. Many describe the interviews as short and easy, and say questions focus on availability, past restaurant or customer service experience, teamwork and handling unhappy guests.
Dress neatly, arrive on time and bring a copy of your resume, even if you applied online. Candidates without restaurant experience report that a friendly, positive manner counts for a lot.
How long does the Olive Garden hiring process take?
Olive Garden doesn't publish a timeline. Some candidates report being offered a job at the interview, and others wait longer. If you haven't heard back within a week or so, a short, polite call to the restaurant is reasonable.
What happens after you get an offer from Olive Garden?
You start training. Olive Garden says hourly team members get ongoing training to sharpen their food and beverage knowledge and skill, and new managers go through a 10-week, hands-on programme covering every part of running a restaurant. It doesn't publish what the first weeks look like for hourly roles.
Olive Garden also offers "Fast Fluency" support for team members learning English, and says most of its managers are internal promotions.
What does Olive Garden look for?
Darden says it looks for people with "a desire to win, a passion to serve, and the ability to build relationships". It names five Winning Behaviors: Get Better Every Day, Grow Individuals & Teams, Simplify, Develop Relationships, and Own It.
Darden's core values are Being of Service, Inclusion & Diversity, Respect & Caring, Integrity & Fairness, Teamwork, Excellence, and Always Learning, Always Teaching. Olive Garden's own careers site describes the job of its managers as delivering "Italian Generosity" and treating guests like family. Those are the ideas to weave into your answers.
Olive Garden interview questions and how to answer them
These are the questions candidates most often report, plus the ones that follow from what Olive Garden and Darden say they look for. For "tell me about a time" questions, use the STAR method: situation, task, action, result.
1. Why do you want to work at Olive Garden?
Be specific. Talk about enjoying looking after people, the team atmosphere, or the training and promotion routes Olive Garden describes. Linking your answer to treating guests like family shows you've done your homework.
2. What is your availability?
Candidates report this as one of the most important questions. Be exact and honest, and say clearly whether you can work evenings, weekends and holidays, which are a restaurant's busiest times.
3. Tell me about your restaurant or customer service experience.
If you have serving or kitchen experience, describe the pace and the volume you handled. If you don't, use any job where you looked after customers or worked under time pressure.
4. What would you do if a guest was unhappy with their meal?
This tests "Being of Service" and "Respect & Caring". Show that you'd apologise, listen, offer to put it right straight away and bring in a manager when needed, so the guest leaves happy.
5. How would you handle several tables at once during a rush?
For servers. Explain how you'd prioritise: greet new tables quickly, keep track of orders, and ask teammates for help before anyone waits too long.
6. Tell me about a time you helped a teammate.
Teamwork is a Darden value, and "Develop Relationships" is a Winning Behavior. Pick an example where you stepped in to help someone else finish, without being asked.
7. What does great hospitality mean to you?
Olive Garden talks about "Italian Generosity" and treating guests like family. Describe hospitality in concrete terms: a warm greeting, remembering details, and checking back at the right moments.
8. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?
"Own It" is one of Darden's Winning Behaviors. Choose a real, modest mistake, say how you fixed it and what you do differently now.
9. How do you keep improving at work?
Darden's values include "Always Learning, Always Teaching", and "Get Better Every Day" is a Winning Behavior. Mention feedback you acted on, or something new you learned recently.
10. A party has been waiting a long time for a table and is getting frustrated. What do you do?
For hosts. Stay calm, give an honest wait time, keep them updated, and let a manager know if the wait is running long.
11. How do you keep food safe and consistent when the kitchen is busy?
For prep and line cooks. Olive Garden says its Culinary Managers are responsible for consistent planning, production and preparation. Talk about following recipes and food safety rules, keeping your station clean and organised, and communicating with the line.
12. How would you develop a team of new hires?
For manager roles. "Grow Individuals & Teams" is a Winning Behavior, and Olive Garden says its Service Managers train, develop and lead the team. Describe how you'd set expectations, coach on the floor and recognise good work.

How to prepare for an Olive Garden interview
- Choose the right role for your experience and availability: front of house, kitchen or management.
- Know Darden's values and the five Winning Behaviors, and have one story for Being of Service, Teamwork and Own It.
- Fix your availability before the interview and be ready to state it clearly.
- Eat at the restaurant if you can, and notice how the team greets and looks after guests.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories about guests, teamwork, busy shifts and mistakes you fixed.
- Rehearse out loud, ideally in a mock interview with someone who will give you honest feedback.
- Bring a resume and two or three questions about training, scheduling and how team members progress.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. The job itself rewards judgement with guests under pressure, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for roles such as customer service, with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn't affiliated with Olive Garden or Darden and doesn't use their questions.
