Menards interview questions focus on customer service, problem-solving and working in a fast-paced store, because that is what Menards says it wants. Its store careers page invites people who have "a passion for customer service, enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, problem-solving", and who want a positive, friendly place for Team Members and customers.
Below is what Menards' own careers pages say, then 12 questions to prepare with how to answer each one for Menards. Where Menards doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Menards hiring process?
You find an opening on Menards' job site, apply, and the location that's hiring follows up. Menards doesn't publish more steps than that, or how long they take.
Menards hires across four areas: retail stores, the General Office (corporate), Midwest Manufacturing and distribution centres. This guide focuses on store roles.

How do you apply to Menards?
Go to Menards careers and choose "Search for Job Openings". That opens Menards' career center, where you can search by location and apply.
The store roles Menards describes:
| Role | What Menards says it involves |
|---|---|
| Sales | Helping customers find products and explaining features and benefits; keeping products stocked and merchandised |
| Order Pick Up & Delivery | Pulling orders for delivery and Buy Online - Pick Up at Store, and helping customers |
| Stock | Keeping shelves stocked and greeting customers who approach or pass by |
| Outside Yard / Receiving | Loading purchases, finding products, unloading freight and stocking |
| Cashier | Processing transactions quickly; "the first and last person our customers see" |
Menards also offers positions for Team Members under 18, including stocking and courtesy patrol. It doesn't publish a minimum age.
What is the Menards interview like?
Menards doesn't publish an interview format, length or number of rounds. When the store contacts you, ask who you'll meet, how long to allow and whether there's a second conversation.
What you can prepare for is the culture Menards describes on its Why Menards page:
- "Dedicated to Service & Quality", Menards' motto.
- Customers as guests. "We treat our customers like guests in our store," and Team Members "will stop working on any tasks to smile, say hi, and ask if there is anything we can help them with."
- Teamwork, with a "hometown hardware store atmosphere".
- Growth. Menards says it has a "Promote-from-Within Culture".
Does Menards have an assessment?
Menards' careers pages don't mention a pre-hire test for store roles. If you're asked to complete one, the store should tell you what it involves. If it shows you work scenarios and asks what you'd do, our guide to situational judgement tests explains that format.
What training does Menards give new hires?
Menards says each department has a set of core training items on the sales process, product knowledge and daily roles. Team Members who want to move into management can join a programme called Preparing for Advancement, and Menards also offers Career Development Planning.
For management, Menards runs a 13-week Manager Trainee programme with one-on-one training from experienced managers, and management internships for Team Members studying for a bachelor's degree in a qualifying field.
Menards interview questions and how to answer them
Menards doesn't publish a question list. These are questions to prepare for, chosen to match what Menards says matters: customer service, problem-solving, a fast pace, teamwork and growing with the company.
Use the STAR structure (situation, task, action, result) for "tell me about a time" questions. Our STAR method guide shows how.
1. Why do you want to work at Menards?
Tie it to customers. Talk about enjoying helping people find what they need, and mention something you've noticed as a shopper at your local store.
2. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it short: school or work, one thing you're good at, and why a busy store job suits you. If you know tools, building or a hobby that fits a department, say so.
3. What does great customer service mean to you?
Use Menards' own standard: stop what you're doing, smile, say hi and ask if there's anything you can help with. Then add getting customers to the right product and following through.
4. Tell me about a time you solved a problem for a customer.
Problem-solving is named on Menards' store careers page. Pick a moment where someone needed something you didn't have to hand, and explain how you found an answer.
5. A customer asks about a product you don't know. What do you do?
Say you'd be honest, find the information or a colleague who knows, and not guess. Menards trains departments on product knowledge, so show you're keen to learn it.
6. How would you handle an upset customer at the register?
Cashiers are "the first and last person our customers see". Listen, stay calm, apologise, fix what you can and call a manager when you can't. End with "a smile and a thank you", as Menards' Customer Service Expectations put it.
7. How do you stay productive when the store is busy?
Menards describes store work as fast-paced. Explain how you prioritise, keep moving on stocking or orders, and still stop for customers who need help.
8. Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
Describe your part, how you helped a teammate and what the team got done. For yard, receiving or stock roles, a physical, shared task like unloading or a big clean-up works well.
9. Are you comfortable with physical work and working outdoors?
Some roles involve loading purchases, unloading freight and working in the outside yard. Be honest about what you can do, and give an example of physical work you've done.
10. How do you make sure orders are right?
Order Pick Up & Delivery pulls orders for delivery and in-store pickup. Talk about checking items against the order, labelling carefully and asking when something's unclear.
11. What is your availability?
Give availability you can actually keep, and an example of being reliable at school, work or on a team.
12. Where would you like to be in a few years?
Menards calls itself a promote-from-within company and runs Preparing for Advancement and a Manager Trainee programme. If you're interested in management, say so, and ask how people at that store have moved up.
How to prepare for a Menards interview
- Pick the role that fits you. Read Menards' descriptions of sales, stock, cashier, order pickup and yard roles before you apply.
- Walk the store. Notice how departments are laid out and how staff greet customers.
- Prepare four or five STAR stories covering customer service, problem-solving, teamwork and staying productive under pressure. Practise them out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Learn the motto. "Dedicated to Service & Quality" is an easy hook for "Why Menards?".
- Know your availability before the interview and stick to it.
- Bring two or three questions about department training, shifts and the path to management.
Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Some employers also use work-style tasks, and judgement in those improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Menards and doesn't use Menards' questions.
